Tinnitus

Does anyone have any tips for relieving tinnitus. I have had a ringing sound in my left ear for the last few weeks. I have no idea what could have caused it except I do listen to movies with earphones at night. Could this have been the cause? It’s driving me crazy and I can’t seem to relieve it :-( any advice or other people’s experience would be helpful

It could be earwax especially if you are using in ear earphones. Get some earwax drops and try them for a few days.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 23/06/2020 20:45

If it is stopping you sleeping try white noise like rain sounds or waves there are loads of options on you tube.

I have Meniere's, so permanent tinnitus.

All I can say is that you get used to it after a while!

MadamHattie · 23/06/2020 21:04

My DM has tinnitus and she's recently started taking b12 and she said it's really helped, it's still there but nowhere near as bad

Ggina55 · 23/06/2020 21:31

Thank you I will try some b12 and see if it relieves it. I have recently had my ear syringed (the one not ringing) and she did check the other which was clear. I have started using the drops to see if it helps.

Try to ignore it. Every time you notice it, force your thoughts somewhere else. Hearing is a combination of the mechanical - what goes on in the ear - and the interpretation. Your brain does not make you aware of noises that have no possible significance, so if you ignore the tinnitus you are training your brain to ignore it. If I think about mine, it's quite bad - at the moment it's the loudest noise in the room. But 99% of the time I don't even notice it ... even though it's always there if I start to pay attention to it.

BernardoTeashop · 23/06/2020 22:02

Mine was caused by using headphones. 5 years on and it has got worse but most of the time I can ignore it. I fall asleep listening to podcasts as it helps drown out the noise

IAintentDead · 23/06/2020 22:06

Anaemia caused mine. Once I got my iron levels up the tinnitus went away.

Bettybunny23 · 23/06/2020 22:23

My husband has this for first time ever caused by hayfever. Take some anti histamine.

BogRollBOGOF · 23/06/2020 22:28

Background noise to distract.

Never before have I noticed mine so much because I normally have radios on plus more noise like traffic. Having family permanently at home including DH constantly taking work calls and sensory DS means there's been too much deafening silence.

I've had it as long as I can remember and suspect it's from the regular ear infections I had on childhood including a couple of incidents of perforated ear drums.

Ggina55 · 23/06/2020 22:31

Will give this a go too! Thank you it is very distracting and keeping me awake

Does anyone know if it’s normal to just have it in one ear as I have read that it should be checked if it’s in one ear

@Bettybunny23 that’s very interesting My Hayfever has been bad recently I wonder if it’s linked

I have tinnitus for about five years. I find that inflammation makes it worse, so if I've eaten badly, too much caffeine etc the ringing goes up. Ginger and tumeric and garlic are good for relieving inflammation, so I have tumeric lattes, fresh ginger tea, raw ginger in green smoothies and lots of garlic, then cut back on sugar, caffeine and drink plenty of water and it does help relieve it. It's awful so full sympathy. hopefully it's just earwax but if not and it turns out to be more permanent do not despair you DO adjust to it, they call it habituate to it and white noise apps are your friend!!

mylittleavalon · 23/06/2020 22:38

Just on a side note- I have in one ear, due to hearing loss Dr suspected bought on from bad ear infection, but it is good to get it checked out if it's one ear to be on safe side

jelly79 · 23/06/2020 22:38

Book in to an audiologist they can help. I find full soft noise helps me. The audiologist recommended meditation and magnesium to me x

GirlCalledJames · 23/06/2020 22:44

I‘ve had it for 34 years and now barely notice it. Don’t try online tips to relieve it as you‘ll notice it more when it comes back.
Do see the doctor, though.

I have tinnitus in one ear and had to have an MRI so you should get in touch with your gp. They also referred me for tinnitus counselling which I found very, very helpful.

Baaaahhhhh · 23/06/2020 22:46

DH got tinnitus initially from drilling the patio, which became worse recently as he has to fly a lot for work. He finds listening to a combination of rain and crickets on you tube when he goes to bed really helps. There are loads of sounds, and you have to find the one that matches the exact tone of your tinnitus. He has to sleep alone though, drives me insane!

spanishomelettes · 23/06/2020 22:51

Get it checked. I got referred straight away to a ENT by my GP when I had ringing in one ear.

EnterNight · 23/06/2020 23:39

I was referred and had an mri as well as apparently it can sometimes be caused by a small tumour (nothing cancerous I add) pressing on the ear.

Turned out in deaf to detain certain frequencies and ive buggered my left ear permanently from loud live music and headphones.

I find in the day keeping a background noise helps. At night I try and tune in to the whistle and use it as a white noise. Weirdly I find it helps me to sleep.

As this is new though you do need to get checked out by your gp.

LittleGreenFr0g · 23/06/2020 23:50

I developed tinitus 3 months ago in both ears and it is stress related. It varies from day to day but in find that drinking lots of water and getting a decent nights sleep help a lot. I have also been doing yoga to help me relax and taking B complex.

Ggina55 · 24/06/2020 07:24

Thank you so much for all the comments and advice, it’s really helpful

You need to go to the doctor and get an MRI scan, tinnitus in one ear is not usual, it could indicate an acoustic neuroma, ie. small tumour pressing on the optic nerve which runs through the ear

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 24/06/2020 07:30

I think mine is stress related. It’s just in one ear only. I know I clench my jaw at night and I know that makes it a lot worse the next day.

I’ll try the magnesium and vitamin B supplements too.
