To not understand why people have a problem with wearing a mask?

Where I live masks are mandatory for everyone over the age of 6 in any public indoor space (shop, train station, doctor's surgery etc) and where it is not possible to guarantee the 2m distance. 100 euro fine for non compliance.

Of course some people break this rule but the vast majority wear masks including a lot of kids younger than 6. My mum and dad in the UK also wear masks when out atm.... But they also said its ay best a 40% uptake and that in the supermarket the staff don't wear them!!!

Here on MumsNet i see lots of people saying that they "won't wear a mask".... Why? It's to protect others so surely its a good thing to do even if they are a bit uncomfortable?
In Asian countries (China, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea) mask wearing is and always has been done to protect others.

Why?

Impetigo thrives under humid conditions.

Miljea · 23/06/2020 23:29

I have to wear one on a daily basis, now, as I'm patient facing NHS, and the office we work out of is so small, we wear one around our colleagues as well. So 'all the time'.

It really, really isn't a drama. After a couple of hours, as opposed to having MNetty 'panic attacks' 🙄 etc, we more or less forget we are wearing them. That's a rotating cast of 18-20 people.

That may be because those of us 'left standing', i.e. the 99% who adapted to the ever morphing 'rules' and 'guidelines' aren't those who cite 'anxiety', 'panic attacks' and 'claustrophobia', given that we faced the actual Covid Onslaught, and- um- got on with it.

I am sick to death of the patheticness of so many of us. Covid has found us deeply wanting, as a nation.

Brexit will destroy us.

HeIenaDove · 23/06/2020 23:34

And now we know why mental health gets so little funding. They know they can get away with it due to the attitudes towards mental health.

Exhibit A

Purpleartichoke · 23/06/2020 23:37

I have pretty severe claustrophobia. Wearing a mask is not getting any easier. I’m having panic attacks. I’m having nightmares. I’m forcing myself to wear one, but it’s really difficult so I leave the house as seldom as possibles. Masks are not mandatory here, but I believe in personal responsibility, so I tie the awful thing to my face every time.

HeIenaDove · 23/06/2020 23:39

I just avoid places where id have to wear them.

caringcarer · 23/06/2020 23:43

I don't use public transport but wear one in supermarket. I get hot in it and I am asthmatic but it is only for half an hour. I think it selfish not to wear one on public transport and in shops.

ChaToilLeam · 23/06/2020 23:45

I‘m in a country where they are mandatory in shops and public transport. Yes, they are annoying, my glasses steam up, my ears are small and I have trouble keeping the damn things on. I still wear mine because if we all do it it provides some protection from virus transmission. I‘ve taken to making my own so I can use softer elastic and build in a nose wire. Plus, might as well have some fun with patterns and fabrics because they’re going to be around a while.

ItsInTheShed · 23/06/2020 23:48

Nope

Where I work ( retail) we have every style going divided but we don’t wear them......idea is the customers are supposed to be in and out quickly and2 metre rule.

How are you all taking off these ‘masks’.... some are just bits of material off Etsy with a bit of elastic attached..... soggy wet and ripped off and left to dry in the car on the way hone..... grim

I’d rather you just get in and out and on with your day thanks, I’m not wearing a grubby mask for 8 hours a day

Personal responsibility was never brought up when people were going on ski trips/Cheltenham/cruise ships. After the virus had already been well publicised.

I guess they could continue to do what they wanted though safe in the knowledge that personal responsibility is only for the plebs to adhere to.

NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 24/06/2020 00:02

agree with Helena

ItsInTheShed · 24/06/2020 00:06

There’s no ‘personal responsibility’ with wearing these ‘masks’ If you think you can then just carry on as normal as if you are immortal..... going out browsing, primark trips and getting up into staffs face and ignoring 2 metres because, hey, you are wearing a mask so not a risk! Not!!

The biggest ignorant rudest customers we’ve had Are the mask wearers....

quantumdog · 24/06/2020 00:11

I just don't understand why people are wearing them to begin with. They offer zero protection...in fact they lull you in to a false sense of security and you forget other methods of prevention, such as touch in g your face.
Plus which, they sound horrific in warm weather and I also suffer from adult acne in the heat. No way...I'm just not concerned enough to wear one.

Dipi79 · 24/06/2020 00:16

I don't wear one because...I don't want to. It's that simple.

CtrlU · 24/06/2020 00:17

As long as your wearing yours, why does it concern you with what other people are doing?

Lovely1a2b3c · 24/06/2020 00:19

With the exception of people with disabilities (including sensory, ASD, PTSD) then I'd say selfishness?

It doesn't make sense that whole populations of other countries have managed to wear masks but not Britons.

IDidntChoseThePondLife · 24/06/2020 00:23

I wear one but really don’t like it as I feel like I’m not getting enough oxygen.

quantumdog · 24/06/2020 00:25

@Lovely1a2b3c
Why is it selfish to recognise that it's pointless? The virus isn't going anywhere...what are you going to do, cover your face forever?
I remember when a minority of bigots were kicking off about the Niqab and France banned head coverings. Now we are expected to live our lives as a faceless mass of mask wearers? No thanks.

ItsInTheShed · 24/06/2020 00:30

Didn’t stop huge fatalities in other countries though did/does it...... look at the numbers!!!

literacer · 24/06/2020 00:32

I've been wearing one on public transport because I have to. I've got a handmade cloth mask, it's quite lightweight but when it blows right against my nose I find it uncomfortable as it restricts my breathing. It was made with two layers and I cut one of the layers out to make it easier to breathe, which helps.

I'm autistic so officially I'm exempt from having to wear one, but I hate confrontation and wouldn't want to be questioned about why I'm not wearing one. I pull it off as soon as I leave the station, and only put it on at the entrance, I don't walk around outdoors wearing it when I don't have to.

HeIenaDove · 24/06/2020 00:34

@Lovely1a2b3c Would that be places like Japan who have prepared masks for heatwaves unlike the dystopian shithole that is the UK.

english.kyodonews.net/news/2020/06/9126f89133e2-focus-japan-companies-developing-cool-face-masks-as-summer-approaches.html

Demand for masks suitable for summer use is increasing in Japan and other parts of the world, with medical experts warning against risks such as breathing difficulties and dehydration when people wear masks in the hot and humid season.

Companies from different industries that have never produced masks before are coming up with solutions, with their own expertise ranging from high-tech cool materials to interesting ideas like putting refrigerant packs inside masks.

Purpleartichoke · 24/06/2020 00:34

The face coverings don’t protect the wearer. They protect the bystanders.

As for washing, we actually have a mini washing machine that came free with our full sized. For years it has seemed like the silliest thing ever. Now it is perfect for running the load of masks every night.

Nsky · 24/06/2020 00:36

Get in the way of my glasses

HeIenaDove · 24/06/2020 00:42

A mini washing machine? Smile Cool

quantumdog · 24/06/2020 00:42

@HeIenaDove
And can you also stop talking about the UK as a 'dystopian shithole'? Never in my life have I known a nation of people prepared to take such a bashing and mostly jump on the bandwagon with it like us Brits.
Leave our shithole be...not everyone wants to tow the line and wear a mask every time we pop out to the shops. They are as worthless as your sentiment.
