To ask if you will let your children use playgrounds?

Playgrounds are opening next week and already I've heard from a few parents who are saying they won't let their children anywhere near them.

DS has been desperate to go and I'm of the opinion that the risk is very, very, low. Just wondering what other people's thoughts are?

@Stuckforthefourthtime

Bit over the top, considering loads of kids are back at school and certainly a lot of younger ones aren’t social distancing at all. Lots of kids mental health is terrible due to isolation, it’s down to parents to make individual decisions that are best for their child

What is the point of going to all the palaver of bubbles, finding non-contact games etc if half the kids are going to be playing out with multiple other families all weekend? So selfish, and makes the extra work and sacrifices of others bloody pointless.

What’s the point of keeping people safe from a virus with a tiny death rate if we then have a huge mental health crisis and big increase in suicides? Suicide is already the leading cause of death in young people in the UK FFS!

Sat morning - local play park here we come. We may even do a tour of play parks.

Sockmonster23 · 24/06/2020 13:01

Absolutely! It’s summer vitamin D and plenty of fresh air.. we have a good sized garden with plenty in it but it’s good for the kids. They love parks ! Come autumn and winter that vitamin d and getting a bit dirty will help them. I Can not keep them locked away from enjoyment forever. I’ve always been of the mindset to cocoon the vulnerable and elderly as much as possible but also we need to live life as much as possible.. and let the kids enjoy it. Summer will soon be over anyway

it's a vicious circle... SOME kids are back at school, which means it's fine to mix with others...

We do know the only reason to end the lockdown in a couple of weeks is because the economy demands it. Nothing to do with people's safety.

Isleepinahedgefund · 24/06/2020 13:05

Yes can't wait!

Thats not what we will be doing though. We will be going to the park and the kids will play on the play equipment. We will try and get them to keep distance from others and we will make sure they wash hands afterwards.

Its all outside so very low risk.

If families / friends want to meet up - they are already doing this. My FB is full of it now.

We've not actually. We would prefer to stay in family bubble but will enjoy the extra activities that are allowed.

Drivingdownthe101 · 24/06/2020 13:13

Outdoor transmission is very very low. Indoor transmission is the risk. So if people are able to sit in pubs, restaurants and cinemas together, then damn right I’m going to let my low risk children do a low risk outdoor activity like play on a playground.

Indeed. This nonsense needs to be scrapped so schools can function properly.

Allyo19 · 24/06/2020 13:15

I didn't realise they were opening, but we will absolutely be using them. My 2 year old needs to climb!

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 24/06/2020 13:18

Absolutely we will. Handgel and handwashing.

Agreed, I think 2 baths a day and some schools not comforting young children who are upset is way over the top.
ineedaholidaynow · 24/06/2020 14:15

The point about bubbles in schools makes it much easier to manage self isolation if someone in school tests positive, only the bubble needs to isolate. This is where being in a Secondary school is a nightmare as you can't bubble in the same way, so if a teacher tests positive, you may have to isolate a vast number of pupils if social distancing/masks aren't used.

OkayKaren · 24/06/2020 14:19

Yes, but we have already been going on them daily.

SockYarn · 24/06/2020 14:21

My kids have been using playgrounds already. The risk is so low that it's almost zero. 2 new cases out of 110,000 people in my area last week.

Teadrinker6 · 24/06/2020 14:51

My kids are 6 and 9. Don't go to play grounds often but if we do i won't mind them going on as long as they aren't teeming with kids. It they are we will stl steer clear I think

JaniceWebster · 24/06/2020 14:59

What I like most if people who decide it's ok to break the law because they feel like it Grin

CornishYarg · 24/06/2020 15:51

Like a shot as DS has really missed going. He's not in one of the years able to return to school and he's thoroughly sick of walks, so this will be a welcome thing to do to fill the time.

VeganVeal · 24/06/2020 16:01

I will probably take my children to the park to watch the others play but wont let them play just in case

Sounds like a fun day out

ginsparkles · 24/06/2020 17:10

No. But then we didn't really use them before all this anyway. So it's not something that we feel a desperate need for.

flowerycurtain · 24/06/2020 17:22

Jeez. There's a mental health problem in the making if I ever saw one.

Yes I'll be going to playgrounds. Probably avoiding the massive ones with hundreds of kids in. The local village one where you barely see two kids a day - yes with bells on.

CheerfulMuddler · 24/06/2020 17:30

Yes, we'll be going. Not the big one in the local park, but definitely the little residential ones.

This is one of the saddest things I've read on mn for a while, poor kids.
purpleme12 · 24/06/2020 17:37

I know I thought that too! Couldn't quite believe she'd written that!

Frazzled2207 · 24/06/2020 17:40

If we’re allowed to go to places like the pub then no way am I not allowing kids to play on playground. I will probably try and avoid busy times though and make sure they wash hands immediately before and after.
