AIBU?

To wonder if I'm the only person who won't be sending kids to school in August

AIBU to wonder if I'm the only one who won't be sending DC back to school in August.

I initially thought "wait and see", but now the details are coming out about what it will be like. And my instinct is telling me to keep them off until normality resumes. Or something closer to normality.

Homeschooling has been going well. I'm not worried about their education.

I do worry about the lack of social interaction, but feel on balance this need wouldn't be satisfied adequately until things are a bit more relaxed anyway.

I wouldn't be expecting any work to be set for my kids, I'll take care of their home learning.

I cannot be the only one feeling this and thinking this?

Or is everyone going back in August/September?

It’s very annoying that the children going back will be learning and progressing.

But when those parents of those that didn’t return until much later on in the year decide to Don the school with their Child’s presence - the majority will be behind and drag down class progress for those that did go back when school opened up for their year group.

I don't know apossibility, it might be the opposite. I fully expect their current speed of learning to stall. The kids I know who are most desperate to get back have spent 3 months in front of their xboxes.

Where are you?

No round here! Outstanding schools in affluent town in south easy. The provision has been superb but my son now back at school 8.30-3.30 and what he’s doing.... well, makes me realise that our focus and me really going for it and him seeming to make real progress... hmmm it was decent but not compared to his school! Thankfully!

Op genuinely curious

In the other thread you stated on this a week ago you say it’s not the health risk you ate concerned about but rather how abnormal the school environment will be.

So if bubbles of 30 etc by August and all much more familiar and normal (children already at school seems entirely unbothered as really.... bubble of 15 is a good number) then will you return?

My DC (P3 and finishing up nursery) are desperate to get back because they miss their friends, their teachers, and not doing work with me at the kitchen table (the P3, obviously). My friends' children, who are also doing the work set by their schools, are the same. The work their schools have been setting is largely consolidation of work that had been done up to the 23rd March. No completely new topics introduced, because that would disadvantage the children whose parents aren't engaging with the material with them.

3 months in front of the xbox indeed.

We have about 150 children back at school now. I’ve not seen one single anxious one, maybe their parents have kept them home? The kids are very casual about it.

well John Swinney's final decision is right they should all be back full time in August what is wrong is that this has been obvious for at least 4 weeks by the end of April there were signs that the big peak had passed in Uk, it was also clear from Uk and many other countries that the risk to children was tiny; by the middle of May it was obvious that we had passed peak in Scotland there is no reason why Scotland could not have had blended learning for the past 3-4 weeks
what is so irritating about John Swinney is that he does not actually care about children or education but his political career when he says the welfare of my child is of paramount importance he is lying it is not his priority is still Scottish independance, his own political career and legacy they saw that public opinion has turned rapidly against their education ideas especially the bleanded learning for most of next year and possibly even next years exams so by the Next day Nicola had said one day a week was not good enough it needed to be 50% now they have seen that public opinion is not behind it, everyone can see that people need to be back to work that many people will be unemployed if not working within 4-5 weeks max. people can't work with part time school so 1 parent would have to give up work and then the number claiming UC would be through the roof, you can't justify part time schooling on the basis of a handful of new cases per day mostly in the care setting with 16 people in ICU and R well below 1 and about 1 in 1800 possibly infected
if 1 in 1800 are infected and 50% of new infections are in care settings that is only 1 in 3600 in the general community, most people will stay home with symptoms but even if only 50% stay home that reduces the risk outside to 1 in 7200 which is about 1 person in every 5th high school add to that the risk to a child of about 1 in 1000 chance of getting seriously ill with covid 0.1% of 1 in 7200 is a very very tiny number

You do not want to send your children back to school as they are currently abnormal.

Surely being home schooled away from friendship and qualified teachers is the abnormal situation? (for this child before I get torn apart by home schoolers!)

'I know I'm lucky

I know teachers who don't want to go back yet.

I'm so lucky I get to choose

I, I, I

This is not about your children is it, this is about you.

This 100%.

user8558 I’m a big advocate of getting the kids back to school and I need mine to go back as financially we will be screwed.

But if it’s working for you as a family have a look at home schooling full time. It was a worry for me too about SD but I think kids cope better to change than adults do

I see where you are coming from, and I'd be the same, but I was a home educator anyway.
Mine is hopefully back in September A levels, but if it doesn't work out we'll just have to support from home as we have been doing for GCSE's.

* We have about 150 children back at school now. I’ve not seen one single anxious one, maybe their parents have kept them home? The kids are very casual about it.*’m

Because those back at school won’t have anxious parents feeding them with anxiety.
The chances are these children are more likely to grow in to adults that will go on adventures in life, take calculated risks, explore, have confidence and not be prone to anxiety and depression.

There will likely be an outcry from those who’s anxiety is stopping them from sending their children to school when they can do so. Obviously. But that doesn’t mean it’s not the truth!

Well, I think money will talk. As soina s employers stop paying furlough/working from home, and you're faced with the choice of indefinite unpaid leave or resigning in order to home educate.... The majority will decide that it's safe enough to send their kids back....

For those saying they want children to go back with no social distancing can I ask what you feel about the staff. Many staff have underlying health conditions or family with underlying health conditions. I went to see my parents and grandmother the other week before I went back to school for the year 10's. If we go back to school with no social distancing who knows how long it will be until I see them again, and possibly never again in the case of my grandmother.

my dd went back for half days this week - bubble of 15. No anxiety here, and none from any other parents. I'd jump at the chance of her and her siblings all being back full time.

While I think on the one hand, each to their own on levels of risk etc. I do not agree or understand with your reasoning at all. They all need to be back at school full time. The economy and working parents need them back. It should be a priority for this govt, not fucking model villages.

@Witchcraftandhokum but that is true for many people returning to work? Nurses, doctors, therapists, taxi drivers, ...
We can’t deprive all children of an education so that adults can meet their grandmother? You will have to time visits with the holidays, but at least you will have the luxury of doing that (most of us don’t get 2 weeks + away from possible infection in any regular way - you will have all summer, end of half term and end if christmas holidays).

@Witchcraftandhokum I feel about teachers going back to work with little or not social distancing the same way I feel about GPs and nurses who have never stopped. Or people working in a massive open plan office issuing passports. Or the hairdressers opening soon.

Yes it might impede their ability to see family members. But we can’t stop the whole of the country forever.
