To think bad of people that work in slaughterhouses??

I was reading something earlier and it got me thinking about the members of staff who actually work in slaughterhouses and who see these things first hand.

Regardless of whether you eat meat or not we're all still human and I'd assume it's a job that's a very hard one emotionally... or am I wrong?? Do the colleagues just look at it like a job and not physically killing animals? It would break my heart 😭

Just like the doctors who treat prisoners know there’s a good chance they’re saving the lives of rapists and murderers.

There you go, you've given another example for me. Prison doctors. I wouldn't even have though of that one myself. I'm sure some people believe those prisoners should be left to die.

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 23/06/2020 17:11

, perhaps we can all agree that this extensive conversation on the subject is a highway to nothing...?

No I can't agree on that. I have an opinion, you have yours, doesn't make either of us right or wrong, but I get the impression you can't let something go unless you feel as though you have won. Sorry, you haven't convinced me, or changed my mind.

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 23/06/2020 17:12

But you do, presumably, know that there are thousands of vegans in the world who do believe this, and so it’s not a completely pie in the sky idea that has been pulled from nowhere.

I don't personally know any, and have never had the opinion expressed to me directly.

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 23/06/2020 17:16

I THINK IT IS IMMORAL and talking about defence lawyers is simply a deflection.

That's your opinion and you are entitled to it, but it wasn't intended as deflection, just a comparison to try to show that people have different feelings about different things. Not everyone feels that using animals for food is immoral.

PhoenixIsFlying · 23/06/2020 17:18

Veganism has grown massively because thankfully there are some people who actually care about how they leave this earth for their children and grandchildren.

RiverMeadow · 23/06/2020 17:39

I'm now totally lost with this thread and the lawyer discussion!

Yes, you appear to be able to argue black is white if you think it will help you win. have you ever considered a career as a criminal defence barrister?

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 23/06/2020 18:25

Yes, you appear to be able to argue black is white if you think it will help you win.

As do you. Well argue is a stretch, repeat yourself continuously would be more accurate. Although I will point out you addressed me first. I don't expect to win, you do, that's the difference.

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 23/06/2020 18:31

Yes, you appear to be able to argue black is white if you think it will help you win

This sentence doesn't make sense for a start, but you seem to by implying that I'm wrong. That's just your opinion.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 23/06/2020 18:50

'I'm now totally lost with this thread and the lawyer discussion!'

Yes I can't quite follow the lawyer/slaughterman comparison either.

One defends people based on the evidence produced, the other brutally kills helpless and harmless animals so people can stuff their faces. I don't get it.

SadSisters · 23/06/2020 18:50

In order for me to imply you were wrong I would have to have a clear idea of your position, but it has changed so much throughout the thread that isn’t possible.

It hasn't at all. Again, making stuff up to convince yourself you are right.

SadSisters · 23/06/2020 19:27

Maybe if you repeat this nonsense enough times it will come true.

I’m off to make a delicious vegan risotto and then eat it with a clear conscience. Have a lovely evening 🍷

Ok good for you 😂 it's no clearer than mine.

Whitepriv · 23/06/2020 20:44

Unless you’re a vegetarian/vegan then yes YABU

PhoenixIsFlying · 23/06/2020 20:50

Funny that people can eat meat and have a clear conscience knowing that not only has a life been slaughtered but eating meat is the biggest cause of climate change. Let’s hope the younger generations will have more respect for their environment. At least I will be able to tell my grandchildren I did all I could to save the planet but I will feel ashamed that sadly so many didn’t care 😥

Byllis · 23/06/2020 21:03

The lawyer comparison is ridiculous. If no one was prepared to slaughter an animal, then the whole meat industry would collapse. If everyone exercised their moral prerogative not to become a criminal defence lawyer, crime would not stop. We'd just have unfair trials.

I'm afraid the only people who think that criminal defence work is in and of itself immoral either don't fully understand the principle behind it or have a moral code that most of us would think pretty twisted. I.e. better to convict the innocent rather than risk the guilty getting away with it - the inverse of what most advanced societies consider to be consistent with protecting human rights.

It's easy to imagine a 'good' society without abbatoirs. The only society in which it's better to have no defence lawyers is one in which there is no crime - and that is not in the defence lawyers' gift.

Other than that, I see all the usual daft arguments have cropped up (animals aren't kind to other animals, vegans can't rule out animal exploitation 100% either so net-ner, some people don't have the luxury of being vegan so this entitles me to eat meat even though I do...)

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 23/06/2020 21:05

At least I will be able to tell my grandchildren I did all I could to save the planet but I will feel ashamed that sadly so many didn’t care 😥

Well you haven't done ALL you could if you are going to be able to tell your grandchildren.

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 23/06/2020 21:12

I think some people are reading too much into the comparison, it was simply to show there are immoral asspects to lots of jobs, but it doesn't make the person doing the job a bad person. There will always be people in the world determined to eat meat and prepared to slaughter animals to do so. Removing abattoirs will not stop that happening.

PhoenixIsFlying · 23/06/2020 21:39

Well you haven't done ALL you could if you are going to be able to tell your grandchildren. - what? 🥴

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 23/06/2020 21:54

what? 🥴

Well apparently, having children causes the biggest Carbone footprint. So if your that worried about the planet, and you really were doing everything you could to save it, you would have chose not to have children.

Devlesko · 23/06/2020 22:56

I’m off to make a delicious vegan risotto and then eat it with a clear conscience.

I'm getting the bacon and sausages out of the freezer for breakfast.
As usual.

Dieu · 23/06/2020 23:11

I couldn't do it, not in a million years. It's my idea of a nightmare job and would break my heart.

insomniasucks · 23/06/2020 23:22

I think that people who eat meat should spend a day at a slaughterhouse. They'll soon change their minds.
