To not understand why some people dont eat meat free meals

I do not call myself vegetarian but i eat meat rarely for health reasons (bowel cancer is common in the family) but i am happy to prepare it as my dh eats meat but enjoys meat free meals around 4 times a week. DC also eat meat free around 4 times a week. My siblings and their partners are also part time vegetarians and pre covid we all enjoyed getting together for meat free feasts.

When DM comes over, she refuses to eat anything without meat. Butternut squash soup? Needs bacon.
Halloumi fajitas? Needs beef.
Goats cheese and onion omelette? Needs chicken.
Plowmans salad? Needs ham.

AIBU to think ffs one meal without meat wont kill you!

@pokehuman people like you do my head in. If you want people to stop eating meat, you're going about it the wrong way with your attitude. No one is going to listen to you if you just call them morons and disgusting.

Ginfordinner · 22/06/2020 06:57

squeekums do you never add spices and herbs to your food at all? Do you just eat a boring bland diet?

Mintjulia · 22/06/2020 07:10

My mum was like that. In her view anything vegetarian was pretentious nonsense. But she was old, had very fixed ideas, thought women shouldn’t work outside the home 😁

Some people are just narrow minded. Buy her some supermarket ham.

ChrissyPlummer · 22/06/2020 07:15

I don’t mind meat free as such; I would love the halloumi and spinach and ricotta pasta is on of my favourite things. Unfortunately, a lot of restaurants/cafes now seem to think as op that a meat substitute must be used instead. Like Leon with their jackfruit nuggets. They sound and look bloody awful. It can’t be beyond the wit of chefs to make a veggie meal without using a substitute.

SilverOnToast · 22/06/2020 07:16

I grew up in a completely vegetarian household until I left home. I never even tasted meat. My parents, and everyone I knew, was veggie. I did suffer from two autoimmune skin conditions though and terrible migraines .

By the age of 20 I had also been diagnosed with coeliac disease and dairy intolerance, and had gall bladder pain. I'm sure a purely veggie diet would have been great for some kids, and I do feel horrible about the environment, but ever since adding non-processed meat and following a high animal protein, non dairy diet my medical issues are massively better.

Nothing wrong with a meat free meal though!

midgebabe · 22/06/2020 07:16

I love root veg, raw , picked or cooked. Eat it every day

Would I be unreasonable to refuse to eat a dinner if it dint have root veg in it ?

SadSisters · 22/06/2020 07:19

I’m laughing at the people who are saying ‘vegetarian food is only good when you put spices on it!’ as if that’s somehow cheating?

Nobody has ever looked at an unseasoned chicken breast or packet of boiled mince and had their mouth water. All food is delicious because of the herbs and spices it’s seasoned with.

Flatwhite32 · 22/06/2020 07:19

I'm pregnant and have recently been craving meat, but usually we eat meat free around 3-4 times a week. DH loves meat, but is happy to cut back for health reasons. We like things like veggie chilli, chickpea curry, veggie lasagne etc. We both absolutely hate meat substitutes like Quorn etc. We tried meat free mince recently and it was foul!

Your DM is being unreasonable. Most people would consider it rude not to even try a meal prepared for you.

However I don't think that's the only reason you posted this. I think you wanted to start a debate so you could convert/condemn people who eat meat.

There are many vegetable fats that are unhealthy, there's been a lot of talk recently about studies finding animal fats are not responsible for high cholesterol. It's early days yet though. Studies also show that homogenised vegetable fats may be a problem. All the years we've been told butter is bad and margarine is good may well have been wrong.

As a PP pointed out, not all land is suitable for growing crops and animals fertilize the ground they graze on. If everyone stopped eating meat today there would be famine. We cannot produce enough calories from crops alone to feed everyone.

If you were to preach to me about raising animal welfare standards I'd be all ears.Smile

LellyMcKelly · 22/06/2020 07:31

I honestly would just buy a packet of ham and put some on her plate whenever she comes over. Life’s too short.

PurpleDaisies · 22/06/2020 07:33

Let her bring her own ham if she’s going to be so ridiculous about it.

Luxembourgmama · 22/06/2020 07:38

I'd happy to eat meat free but I do feel dairy free is really really lacking something. A richness

CathyComesHome · 22/06/2020 07:42

This thread is so bizarre. The posters claiming they literally never eat anything that doesn’t contain meat. Do you genuinely literally claim you have never tasted:
Any form of breakfast cereal
Porridge
Cake
Chocolate
Crisps
Buttered toast
Toast with jam, marmite, peanut butter, etc.
Tomato pasta
Cheese pizza
Macaroni cheese
Cheese toastie
Plain or cheese omelette
Salad
Chips
Tomato soup

How on earth do you live?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/06/2020 08:11

God, there certainly are docks in this debates. On both sides!

You need, herbs and spices in all the food including ones with meat! If this is a new information for someone, you are the reason why British food is a laughing stock abroad even though it can actually be absolutely delicious when done right Confused

I agree with others that people saying they have meat in absolutely everything are being ridiculous. Have you never had Margherita? 🙄

And the vegans judging others here. God, get of your high horse. You are just really proving the stereotype about vegans here. Especially our super nasty cancer commentor🙄

Bloody hell. Stop being dumb, eat balanced diet and use your fucking spices.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/06/2020 08:11

Dicks, not docks. Damn it!

Sandybval · 22/06/2020 08:13

I have never, ever seasoned my chicken haha.

SadSisters · 22/06/2020 08:23

Where do people hear these things?! A single google search would instantly show you that this just isn’t true.

I have never, ever seasoned my chicken haha.

For real?! Never even salt and pepper?

BigSandyBalls2015 · 22/06/2020 08:23

I love meat but I’ve just eaten an omelette made with peppers, onion, mushrooms and tomato .... does that mean I’m a flexitarian Grin

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/06/2020 08:27

Means you are normal😂
SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/06/2020 08:27

Hm. I thought the quote thing was just for premium😱

Sandybval · 22/06/2020 08:27

No, I don't add salt to anything and not a fan of pepper. I have a really, really bland taste pallette though, the plainer the better!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/06/2020 08:28

@SadSisters i would believe it tbh.

Rubyupbeat · 22/06/2020 08:28

Goodness, you can have the most amazing meat free , plant based Meals. We are vegan, my husband went from a total carnivore, who like others have said meat in every meal, to a totally committed vegan, vegan shoes, even our 2 latest cars cost more, as we wanted the top model, but no leather.... He loves his food, and many restaurants do amazing vegan menus.
I still dont believe you can be an animal lover and eat them, sorry!
