So in the last week the U.K. government has announced that they will;

  1. Put 1billion into a school "catch up" fund
  1. Continue on the free school meal vouchers over the summer!

YET NOW there's people on Instagram going mad because apparently the government has "very quietly" removed the schools fruit and veg scheme!!?

Surely we Cannot expect the government (tax payers) to provide all of these things and apples and pears is surely not the priority right now!!

Yes...im fed up with paying taxes so that kids can have something to eat...
Not.

malificent7 · 19/06/2020 23:15

I was obviously being sarcastic ..it takes a villiage to raise a child...we should make healthy food accesable to all.

You understand why we have trident, right?

No. For the life of me, I don't.

Fairyliz · 19/06/2020 23:38

When my DD was in primary school I used to send her in with two pieces of fruit in her lunch box. I was a bit worried when she started bringing it home uneaten but she told me there was lots of fruit at school because most of the children didn’t eat it, so she was eating it.
A few years later I started working at a different school and the same thing happened there. The only children who ate the fruit were the ones used to eating it at home. Children copy their parents and it’s hard to change that by the time they get to school.

Molly and a tub of cream cheese / cheese spread in Aldi is what, 59p ? A half cucumber is 30p.

Packing a kid off to school with chocolate spread sandwiches each day because they're poor 🙄 is just a fucking cop out.

Hell a bag of bananas to make banana sandwiches is under £1 in Aldi.

From,

the skint woman with too much dignity to let her kids live off shite as a result.

I think it's called a pissing contest.
Yester · 19/06/2020 23:45

In my DC school 27% of children are obese. I agree parents should feed their dc healthier but they don't. The loss of free fruit and veg will impact those children not the skint/feckless/ill educated parents but children. Who will grow up even more unhealthy wirh no taste for veg or fruit and less likely to eat healthier when they have a choice. Rhis will cost us all in the end.

@annabel85

Let's all have guns then, just as a deterrent.

You see that's what I never understood about nuclear weapons. If they are such a good deterrent, then logically everyone should have one.

Look at all the wars we could have avoided since 1945 if we'd been sensible and given them out like sweeties.

It was a brilliant idea and I'm sad to see it go. There are lots of children who don't eat it at home. We know the importance of eating fruit and veg and we know the importance of catching them early in gaining the habit.

Removing it will disadvantage kids who are already disadvantaged. There isn't another way of doing it, without singling those children out. The £15 over the summer will not benefit those kids more than a few weeks, but the government is clawing back the money needed over the covid summer from the f and v scheme long term. Shame on them.

Not that I'm surprised-they'll kick our asses under the guise of covid after it's over, and slide in all kinds of reactionary crap. Although they themselves won't suffer, obviously.

rawlikesushi · 20/06/2020 05:31

The government have said that the scheme is just temporarily paused until more children back at school, and that funds reallocated to nhs.

Yes, because macho politicians like to have a big dick they can wave about.

Get a grip. I’m very happy we have trident. We need it

I don't disagree with the sentiment but it seems premature to be raging about something that hasn't actually happened.

D4rwin · 20/06/2020 07:36

There will always be dissent over political decisions in a democracy. Not everyone has to be happy (by which you must mean pacified) with every policy. People are allowed to express dissatisfaction. But the current supporters take disagreement to be moaning, rather than a chance for discussion and debate.

LakieLady · 20/06/2020 07:50

It seems like fewer and fewer people are prepared to think for and look after themselves

Fewer and fewer families are able to meet their most basic needs.

The government's failure to to uprate the benefit cap means that, where I live, a family with 2 children have less than £120pw to feed and clothe themselves and pay their bills, even if they're in "affordable" social housing. And they have to pay 20% of their council tax, which is over £400 a year for a band D property, which is what most 3-bed houses are.

And they haven't benefited at all from the increase in UC, because the extra £20pw just gets deducted because of the cap.

Funny how the hundreds of countries that don't get involved in pointless wars don't feel they need nukes.

mollypuss1 · 20/06/2020 09:58

@WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo I think you’ve missed my point. I wasn’t suggesting a chocolate spread sandwich was a good choice, I was highlighting that some parents can’t afford £3.59 just on fruit each week as some previous posters had suggested and some posters have little comprehension of what true poverty in this country looks like. Should the parent’s of the child in question make better choices with their £1.50 a week? Possibly. Do they? No. Who suffers? The poor child.

TheSandman · 20/06/2020 10:32

Get a grip. I’m very happy we have trident. We need it

Why?

dontdisturbmenow · 20/06/2020 10:34

We are a very spoiled of society who as soon as we get something, we want the next but we think we are entitled to.

TheSandman · 20/06/2020 10:36

To clarify - why do think we need it?

Ikeatears · 20/06/2020 10:39

I would suspect the people moaning about the fruit and veg scheme aren't even the people it would benefit most. There are better ways at the moment to spend the money in my opinion.

user1497207191 · 20/06/2020 10:40

Fruit isn't more expensive than "junk" food.

Bananas, apples, oranges, can be bought for around 25p each. That's cheaper than a chocolate bar or bag of crisps.
