Should NHS staff go ahead in queues?

I have only done a few times, and got some evil looks from the others queuing. I was knackered and needed some essentials and needed to pick my children up from school as I have hardly seen them so thought 'just this once, again'-might not do it again!
It sort of felt like all the clapping in the world and rainbows doesn't mean much in the real world, but I might be a bit more careful about waving my lanyard around in the future (and yes, i'm core ward NHS staff working on covid wards fwiw).
Any thoughts from others very welcome.

@namesnames

No, I wouldn't consider that rude, as they work in the supermarket it would be a perk of the job.

@Supermummy4 aw bless you, I’m a specialist NP in ED so definitely in the thick of it too! Don’t feel embarrassed or ashamed you deserve it, I’m sure it’ll get withdrawn soon anyway now things are getting back to normality, enjoy it while it lasts!

Yankathebear · 19/06/2020 18:18

NHS and never used it. I’ve never felt the need. I go on my day off.
I am embarrassed when showing my ID for a discount and probably look like dodgy flashing my ID at the cashier. (FWIW I’ve only used the discount twice and haven’t taken advantage of any other ‘perks’).

PinkiOcelot · 19/06/2020 18:18

No. I think if you’ve just finished a 12 hour nightshift and are just popping in fair enough, but if you’re on a day off, queue like everyone else.
I’m NHS btw and have never jumped the queue.

FizzFan · 19/06/2020 18:19

I’m not bothered, it’s hardly going to add in that much delay. I’ve let old people in front of me when we’ve been queuing for shops, it’s hardly going to make a difference

OwlBeThere · 19/06/2020 18:20

No I don’t think they should. Lots of people are tired, haven’t seen their kids, can’t stand to queue etc. That doesn’t mean people don’t appreciate the work you do.

Supermummy4 · 19/06/2020 18:22

@Brieminewine

I have sent you mesaage.

No

Supermummy4 · 19/06/2020 18:23

@PinkiOcelot

I only ever use it when popping in on the way to or from work.

No.

TSSDNCOP · 19/06/2020 18:26

How long is the queue privilege going on for? Fairly soon the numbers in the Covid wards will dwindle. Will Tanya off Reception still be able to go to the front?

TARSCOUT · 19/06/2020 18:30

At height of crisis, I would jump if it was work day with the rationale that I could be carrying anything on me because I had direct contact with covid patients
You should not have been anywhere near the shops in that case!

Elouera · 19/06/2020 18:33

I have a hidden disability. How do I prove I should go in front of others???

I don't, I line up like everyone else! I'm also NHS frontline, but don't use my card to push infront of others!

Lifeispassingby · 19/06/2020 18:36

The NHS are heroes in my book, they wee before the pandemic and and they always will be. I would wait and allow NHS workers ahead of me every time without question

Toddlerteaplease · 19/06/2020 18:36

No we shouldn't. Our time is no more valuable than any one else's.

Pinkblueberry · 19/06/2020 18:39

A few weeks/months ago no. But I think we’re done with this now. The queues are not bigger than usual anymore - how did you manage before?

pandafunfactory · 19/06/2020 18:41

I've done it repeatedly. I work very hard and long hours. I don't have extra time on Saturdays to queue when I could be at home with my kids. Tonight I am queuing as had day off and have the time.

vintagesewingmachine · 19/06/2020 18:43

I would never push in front anwhere waving my badge but I do like the 7.30 am NHS priority slot at Sainbury's. Aside from the Click and Collect pickers, no more than 7 or 8 other people in the large shop. Bloody marvellous.

coffeechocolatecoffee · 19/06/2020 18:44

@Tarscout like all others, I would have changed my clothes before leaving work and made every effort to ensure no cross contamination.
However when working additional days and longer hours, the alternative to queue jumping was to pick up children, go home and shower then go wait in queue with them at 7pm which was not an option. So jumping the queue before I picked them up was the best option.

Chloemol · 19/06/2020 18:45

No it’s wrong. You maybe on a Covid ward but the country is full of people who have worked all through this, they are just as deserving, it’s got vulnerable people who still have to shop, they are just as deserving, etc etc. What makes you so special, especially as we are repeatedly told the virus is reducing

Lots of people work long hours and need to pick stuff up on the way home

doggydaft · 19/06/2020 18:47

I've never used my id, I really don't think my time is any more valuable than anyone else's to be honest.
I'm a full time frontline nurse.

vanillandhoney · 19/06/2020 18:51

Nope, I don't think so.

I also want to know how long this kind of special treatment will carry on for?

Whywhywhy321 · 19/06/2020 18:59

My son works in a supermarket. When the NHS hour starts all those in work had to go to the front door, form two lines and clap the NHS workers in! He wouldn’t really have minded, but knew several of those coming in. One girl was still on Maternity Leave, one worked on the switchboard and two were general admin, and one of those was signed off sick! Meanwhile the care home workers, who look after his Nana (waiting to get some shopping on way home after night shifts), had to wait until the NHS hour was up to get in! This does cause resentment as I know who were the most in need of priority!

Dagnabit · 19/06/2020 19:00

I think you should queue. I value your contribution but not everyone is furloughed - with work, home schooling, constant online sessions for the children's hobbies, I'm busier than ever. Everyone is fed up so someone swanning passed, waving a lanyard is bound to wind people up.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 19/06/2020 19:02

Front line worker, I’ve never used it.

Me doing my job the same as everyone else doesn’t and shouldn’t get me special treatment, my down time is no more
Important than others, Just my personal opinion. No judgment.

Each to their own tho.
