Reception child refused school place

Abbazed · 19/06/2020 15:46

My 5 Yr old son has been refused a reception place. Has anyone else been refused a place?

Sec told me we weren't vulnerable or key workers so tough.

Are they having reception class back?

Lots of schools are still only able to accommodate key workers and vulnerable despite what the government say

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 19/06/2020 15:48

Or have you missed a deadline for letting them know?

mummy2oli · 19/06/2020 15:51

My child’s school have an usually high number of key worker and vulnerable children. They have had this throughout. They have everything in place since guidelines were brought out, and have said they are unable to accommodate any extra children as the priority had to be to those already going. In my area this is hit and miss across schools as some were able to accommodate extra, but there were the ones with only a handful of children already attending

Quaren · 19/06/2020 15:51

@stanis I love your user name! Just finished GOT last night!

Hercwasonaroll · 19/06/2020 15:52

Find out why.

It's probably because they don't have space.

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 19/06/2020 15:53

Presumably the school is full due to the numbers of key worker and vulnerable children to accommodate.

Brendabigbaps · 19/06/2020 15:54

Ours is full.

AriettyHomily · 19/06/2020 15:54

In reception this year or starting next?

This year - they probably dont have space. It was first come first served after key worker kids at our school.

InDubiousBattle · 19/06/2020 16:00

Two of the primaries in our area are full with the children of key workers so aren't accepting any non key workers dc at all. My friends dd goes to an academy school which is a hub for key worker dc from 3 or 4 other schools in the academy group, so the other schools are accepting reception and years 1 and 6 back but her dd's school is full.

Eeples · 19/06/2020 16:16

Many children will have been refused spaces. Schools prioritise key worker and vulnerable children then youngest to oldest in the eligible year groups (then others if they have space/ staffing/ funds.)

If they don't have room after key worker and vulnerable children have been considered, they won't be able to accommodate other children even if they are in one to the groups included in the list of year groups eligible to return from 1st June.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/06/2020 16:20

In my area it varies from children in all years who want a place can have a place to children in priority years plus KW, to just KW, to school not open as building unsuitable.

Herecomethehotstepper · 19/06/2020 16:21

My dc school sent out an email saying they had places. I called and they said they could take ds in nursery but not DD as reception was full. I decided not to send them. The next day, they called and said reception had increased its numbers and they could take DD but nursery was now full! 🤦‍♀️ I am sending DD in and ds is on the waiting list for nursery. The guidelines are changing by the hour so if your school have a waiting list then you might get lucky.

Xiaoxiong · 19/06/2020 16:24

As everyone else said - they probably don't have space, or you missed the deadline to tell them you wanted a space.

I was just gossiping chatting to a neighbour, someone she knows decided not to send her Year 1 back at first because she wanted to see how it went and how everyone else's kids were doing. After a week she rang the school and said her daughter would "take up her place now" and the school said too bad, you missed the boat and now we have no spaces and the mum massively kicked off, said her daughter had a right to a full time education, she was going to sue the school etc. She's all over Facebook rage-posting about it. I'm just waiting for the angry photos in the local paper.

ILikeYouToo · 19/06/2020 16:28

In our town schools haven't taken any reception classes back - schools couldn't cope with more than years 1 and 6 and keyworker children due to space and teacher numbers. Plus we were told for year 1 that you had to accept the place by a certain date or you wouldn't be able to change your mind. Obviously they've got to plan the bubbles very carefully...

ineedaholidaynow · 19/06/2020 16:33

Have you just asked now? Did they do a questionnaire before/over half term?

Appuskidu · 19/06/2020 16:36

Are they having Year R back at all? We aren’t.

Did you miss the cut off deadline?

istheresomethingishouldknow · 19/06/2020 16:38

Our school made it very clear that there were no guarantees of a space even if you ticked 'yes' on the school place survey ... all down to numbers of available staff, numbers of kw/vulnerable children, and then eligible year groups in preferential order.

AllsortsofAwkward · 19/06/2020 16:39

Only year 6 and year 1 went back and keyworker children at my kids school.

EffYouSeeKaye · 19/06/2020 16:40

What communication have you had from school explaining their current opening policy?

The schools I’m aware of (only a small sample) have sent copious regular emails to parents explaining in what capacity they are able to open on a week-by-week basis.

Who did you speak to? Did you just phone the office to ask for a place from Monday or something?

cabbageking · 19/06/2020 16:40

Some schools have been unable to take all Reception. Year 1 and Year 6 children. It is up to the school of they can take back any of these years.

They don't have to take any of these years back.

TheGirlWithAThornInHerSide · 19/06/2020 16:41

You probably applied to late and it was full.

Ours gave plenty of notice about needing to apply for "re-opening" at start of June. Numbers were limited.
Keyworkers' kids had priority, and some were already going before school, for "childcare".
Many didn't get places.

justasking111 · 19/06/2020 16:42

Reception child here 1 hour a week for the next three weeks, no idea what will happen in September.

TheGirlWithAThornInHerSide · 19/06/2020 16:42

Sorry, OP. I mean friend of a your neighbour, not you.

TheGirlWithAThornInHerSide · 19/06/2020 16:44

Ignore that, I got @EffYouSeeKaye and OP mixed up.
