Social distancing and giving lifts

I am going to a family bbq tomorrow and will be driving as I don’t drink. I’ve been asked to give a lift to other people going (who I don’t live with) so they can all drink - AIBU to say no because of social distancing ?

I wouldn't give anyone a lift for those very reasons.

YANBU - a car is basically a small room. You cannot give people a lift at the moment.

I might offer for one person sitting back seat near side in a reasonably sized car. I certainly wouldn’t take a group.

Driving back a bunch of drunk people in a small enclosed space sound like my idea of a nightmare right now. I’d be looking to make an early exit from the BBQ too. Highly unlikely they’ll stick to social distancing after they’ve had a few.

Lifts are OK in unusual situations, eg dropping someone off to hospital, but even then both parties should wear masks and keep the windows open as much as possible.

Yep you would not be a silly distanced so it’s not permitted. Mil keeps wanting us to pick her up to take her places. Nope not happening!

YANBU. They can walk/bus or cycle it, or God forbid, one of them who is not into SD could not drink beyond the legal limit.

I've done back, far seat, windows open, clean car before and after.

I have noticed a decided lack of care in SD and touching things after drinking. DH had a socially distanced BBQ for his birthday and one of his friends was hugging people at the end. Not sober me or drunk DH who got told.

It's a ridiculous suggestion from them - particularly as others have pointed out its for the vital reason of them wanting to get pissed...

I'm in at work all next week - an hour's drive each way - and I usually lift share with a colleague. We are travelling separately in our own cars precisely because of social distancing. And our trips are necessary, rather than BBQ based.

No way. I'm going to a friend's house (should I say garden!) tonight. Another friend who is going lives around the back of me, we'll be travelling there separately.

There’s no way I would do this but where I live taxis are still operating - as in normal cars with no screens etc. All seems weird!

I would also want the option to leave early if people aren’t following good practices as the party progresses.

How unkind of family to cause a huge argument over this. I would be tempted not to go, although perhaps the host isn't one of the unpleasant ones.

Why would you put yourself at risk by doing this? We have to queue 2 metres apart outside a supermarket yet you would put yourself in an indoor situation with less distance between you and a n other. Why would you do that?

I wouldn't either. Maybe the people could look into taxis - either black cabs or the big people carriers (van style) so there's a gap between driver and rear row of seats.

If they're going to argue about this AND they're going to drink I suggest they might not actually keep up with the social distancing while they're there OP. I'd avoid them altogether.

I gave my daughter a lift from the supermarket. I'm retired, she's been working from home. We have both only been out for shopping.

Me giving her a lift was safer than her getting a taxi with a stranger who also had had others in the car.

I wouldn't currently give anyone a lift for purely social reasons.

No. You cant't travel with someone not part of your household unless its for work purposes.

I've been unable to give lifts to ds's friends so they can meet up in each others gardens for this reason.
