Before anyone jumps on me, this is not a boasting thread. A few years ago we had nothing and felt like we were drowning, so now I am very cautious with money and save, save, save.

I have 8000 which is strictly for emergencies and is never touched.

Then I've just started a holiday fund which has a small amount of 550 in it.

What about you?

£7k- £1k emergency fund, £3k wedding fund, £3k house deposit

Not as much as some people in here but actually I’m really proud of it. When I had DD (who was a “surprise”) at 25, my job contract ran out 3 months before she was due and I was unemployed, and DP was on a zero hours contract at a minimum wage job. We managed to survive without going into debt, even if meant living on frozen sausages that DP brought home from work.

I’m now doing a masters in an allied health profession and DP got a slightly better job- still minimum wage but with contracted hours. We’ve worked really hard to save that money.

2.5k I'm trying to grow it. I need over 3k to be approved for a visa to take my daughter on a holiday to the states to see her dad. I did have 5k but made some bad decisions last year in the stress of lockdown (a lot of take away and taxis when we were given summer freedom!) Now I'm adjusting to lockdown and trying to grow it back up.

wow @KerryBristow

Really uncalled for! Shock

Sansaplans · 23/03/2021 19:09

About £300. For quite a few years I have over £10k pretty constantly just in case.

XenoBitch · 23/03/2021 19:13

£5500. I am on UC so much more than that, I will be expected to use to live off of. It is emergency money for if my dog needs vet treatment, as she is not insured.

Snowdrop30 · 23/03/2021 19:27

5k. Saving to get roof leak fixed. Takes a depressingly long amount of time!

cyclingmad · 23/03/2021 19:58

£8k. I used lockdown and the fact my job could be at risk to overhaul my finances. Working out what the bare minimum i need if I was unemployed. I know there is a general opinion of saving 3 months but I actually people need to start thinking more like 6 - 10 months jobs aren't easy to come by, you can interview and job can fall through and bsck you go to find another job.

My aim is to eventually have 12 months saved up because it just gives plenty of breathing space, sont have to stress, can be more selective on what jobs fo go for than going for anything just cos you'll run out of money. I was made redundant once I had no savings and had to take what I coukd find and ended up taking a pay cut, took me 4yrs to move up to earning more before redundancy.

£1,400 in one account that I leave alone. I put £20 a week in it.

£840 in another that is connected to my current account so I transfer money out if needed - I'm on benefits so feel lucky I can do this. The money is for birthdays and Christmas, school stuff etc. As there's been no clubs etc for a year I've managed to save more than I usually do.

altiara · 23/03/2021 20:22

15.5k, 13k is for the ballon payment as have my car on finance. But also for emergencies as can always refinance my car in 18 months time if needed.
And I’m saving for a new sofa!
Have separated from stb ex H so will be getting a large amount of our shared equity and buying a house. Am aiming to create pots for
-car and holidays
-emergencies
-kids university fund

mrsbyers · 23/03/2021 20:25

£30,000 saved over the last 15 months , I had a Temporary promotion at work and banked all the extra money on top of my usual savings and money from stopping smoking / having no social life due to Covid / no annual Vegas trip with best friend. I have set myself a target to have saved £100k by Feb 2027 when I turn 55 and then I can explore options around retirement

AllDoneIn · 23/03/2021 20:26

Enough to live for a year which I'm using to pay for my first year out of teaching and any training I want to do.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 23/03/2021 20:27

I have 85p. An actual 85p in my savings account. I haven't decided what to spend it on yet.

LexMitior · 23/03/2021 20:29

I am single parent and my aim to is have one years finance in case of imminent disaster. I find that is really important psychologically because when its all on you feel insanely responsible and only have yourself to manage money.

I am not there yet but I have 30k which prevents the 3am "oh fuck" moments being too awful.

Chimeraforce · 23/03/2021 20:29

Not enough to pay off the mortgage, Jack my job or retire.

WhySoSensitive · 23/03/2021 20:47

Around £3.
Living the high life over here.

Would love to be one of those mumsnetters earning 80k + and saving hundreds a month but it ain’t happening.

ChocolateFace · 23/03/2021 21:18

I don't t get threads like this.

I have nearly £20k in savings.
I'm not saving for anything in particular. I may well spend the money soon, or I may continue to life with my outdated bathroom.

I bet there are loads of MNetters I debt. Everyone's different. I've had more savings and have also been in debt.

Again, what's the point?

helen1819 · 28/03/2021 12:23

I like this thread! Fun way to compare thinking processes and aspirations.

Just under 30. No kids, no inheritance in the pic.

My accounts are:
£25k in ETF cash account
£30k in savings in UK
$4k in savings in US (really need to get that over)
€6k in savings Europe (ditto)

Goals:
I expect to save additional £20k over next 14 months.

Partner (has his own savings) and I are putting £100k in joint savings - £50k each towards a house next year.

Goal is to have emergency funds left over after we've bought it, so £30k each.

Plus some overseas investment projects.

We are hoping for kids in the next 5 years, and really value being able to see family in Europe and Africa...

Stay safe everyone!!Smile
