To ask how much you have in savings and what you are saving for?

Before anyone jumps on me, this is not a boasting thread. A few years ago we had nothing and felt like we were drowning, so now I am very cautious with money and save, save, save.

I have 8000 which is strictly for emergencies and is never touched.

Then I've just started a holiday fund which has a small amount of 550 in it.

What about you?

50k ish, not too sure, it's in a few places. Not for anything special, just a cushion. Will probably go towards a new house in a few years when our baby is older and we want more space.

HippoOnMyRoofEatingCake · 23/01/2021 10:31

Quite a lot. Saving to buy a decent house mortgage-free. Should be able to do so by middle of 2022.

Ribidibidibidoobahday · 23/01/2021 10:48

So the people who are saving to buy mortgage free can I ask why? I mean surely money lost on rent is more than that which would be lost on interest.

Are you in a rent free position (work accommodation, parents, smaller unmortgaged property) or are you simply unable to get a mortgage (financial history, eye on an unusual, unmorgagable property)?

£21k "fuck-off fund" to leave my cheating, bully of a partner after lockdown. Sad Hoping to get that up to £25k by the summer so I can put down a deposit for a house.

What is it that makes people find these zombie threads and then decide to post on them?

I have loads of money, thanks.

Noshowlomo · 23/01/2021 11:00

10p in my ISA. Sometimes it goes up to £100 which is spent in Marks the week after 🤷🏻‍♀️ YOLO

Good for you, best of luck Flowers

Nothing :( money always seems tight. I think nursery fees plus part time working means we're only just about managing

It's just a way for people with savings to feel smug and superior to the common folk. Whatever makes them feel good about themselves.
BubblyBarbara · 23/01/2021 11:22

A few hundred K give or take. I retired last year and my DH died a couple of years ago so I took 25% of the pot tax free. I have nothing to spend it on though as mortgage is paid up. Maybe some political donations as I don’t like the way the country is going

applesandpears33 · 23/01/2021 11:28

We are saving to do work on the house. The bathroom and kitchen are both over twenty years old and starting to fall apart. We also need to replace some carpets and some rooms need re-decorated, although I'll try to do some of that work myself.

gasgig · 23/01/2021 11:28

We have about 200k, don't need it for anything particular but just live frugally & have worked very hard & made some strategic career decisions.

gasgig · 23/01/2021 11:28

I don't buy that is the stock answer to these threads.

gasgig · 23/01/2021 11:29

but not buy!

midnightstar66 · 23/01/2021 11:30

I have £40 - the intention is for a weekend break in September but it'll probably end up transferred back into my account mid February.

HippoOnMyRoofEatingCake · 23/01/2021 11:32

Not trying to boast here - have just under 200k combined as a couple

But you did bump a seven-month-old thread just to tell us that

stevalnamechanger · 23/01/2021 11:32

I have a 10k emergency fund . Then I have an investments of about 20k that I am growing and regularly investing in . Adding to it every month targeting reaching 100k + to aid earlier retirement alongside my work pension

I've managed to build this up after buying a home .

Saving is more important to me than buying stuff

Highly recommend Meaningful Money Handbook and facebook group / Financial independence UK

stevalnamechanger · 23/01/2021 11:33

I also have no idea what DP has maybe 30 k plus other investments ..: we don't mix finances 😂

FoxgloveBee · 23/01/2021 11:34

I'm not saying how much I have in savings but I save 25% of my salary each month (I really would like to save 30% so that is my goal for this year) - that is specifically for a large house deposit.

Because of financial difficulties in the past year I have taken 50% of it out but that's understandable.

As well as those savings, I put away £100 a month for my daughter in a child savings account and I have a birthdays and Christmas savings fund.

Ribidibidibidoobahday · 23/01/2021 12:37

I'm really sorry that this thread makes you feel bad about yourself. Why did you read it if you thought that would be the case?

I find it really interesting. For every hundreds of thousands of inheritance that gives me a pang of jealousy there's 3 inspiring stories of people digging out of debt or saving to leave DA. This is never going to be an honest representation of societies savings but it's interesting to know how people's priorities vary from your own.

Ribidibidibidoobahday · 23/01/2021 12:40

Sorry, I've not quite got the hang of quotes yet. The above was in response to this.

And all the other people who feel the need to point out that they think strangers on the internet are showing off. Just chuckle and move on.

Ribidibidibidoobahday · 23/01/2021 12:44

Again my quote is not showing.
Guess that's my cue to put down the phone and make a cuppa

bloodywhitecat · 23/01/2021 12:59

Just under 10K and growing, it will cover DP's funeral and keep me going for a couple of months after his death until I start fostering again.

problembottom · 23/01/2021 13:19

We have £4k. We had £40k until last year when we bought a house - £25k stamp duty, other house bits and my engagement ring later...
