Will you be booking a (post-lockdown) UK holiday this year

stephi81 · 18/06/2020 10:18

Just wondering if anybody here is planning to go on a UK holiday / break now that lockdown restrictions are starting to be lifted (obviously I know this is all dependent on there not being another wave). If so where are you planning on going / what kind of thing are you planning to do? We would like to book maybe 3 nights somewhere with our three kids (12, 3 and 8 months) last week of August but I'm just not sure what to look for. Husband said about taking them to Longleat and staying in a hotel in Bath but I'm worried there wont be much else open for us to do (restaurants / parks, etc). Or do we try and find a caravan or lodge closer to nature trails etc...

Just wondered what everyone is planning to do? Much as I would love to go, for financial reasons Center Parcs is not an option this year!

Thanks in advance

Booked a self catering cottage in Devon. Husband has worked very hard throughout so he really needs a break. Myself and two older teens need to get out of these four walls. Fully refundable if any Covid issues. Really looking forward to a change of scenery, countryside and beach walks with the dog. Hoping for some dry days.

UserFriendly14 · 18/06/2020 12:26

We will definitely be going away in the UK. We need to look at different walls and are happy just going for walks in different places, even if beaches and restaurants are closed. Like PP have said, my only concern is how [un]happy some locals would be to having tourists so soon.

@catspyjamas123

The U.K. is so disappointing for holidays at the best of times. It just doesn’t feel like a break and at present what would you do apart from sit in a damp holiday cottage? Nowhere to go out to. I had time off booked for a holiday abroad in July which won’t be happening. We will stay home and save the money in the hope that it’s possible to go somewhere next year.
I disagree. We have had some fab UK holidays - lovely walks, great pubs, historical sites - what's not to like?
EnlightenedOwl · 18/06/2020 18:12

Trying for a few days in Yorkshire in October but will probably end up having cancel it

PrincessHoneysuckle · 18/06/2020 18:18

We moved our summer holiday abroad to next year and we wanted something to look forward to so I've booked a b&b in Bridlington next month for a change of scene

theendoftheworldasweknowit · 18/06/2020 18:20

I've been told to use up my annual leave whilst busy at work, so have effectively lost it.

With that said, I'm not sure I could relax on a holiday this year.

Hopefully next year?

bowchicawowwow · 18/06/2020 18:54

Campsite booked for August in Devon . Only paid a £20 deposit so no biggie if it's cancelled.

Holidayaddict · 18/06/2020 21:03

Yes. Self catering cottage end of July. Beaches, moors etc to explore so no worries if other attractions not open. Has garden & bbq and fairly remote so hopefully no hassle if locals are funny! Cancellable for Covid reasons. Was supposed to be going to relatives holiday home in France but cba with all the uncertainty and worrying about quarantine etc so made the decision. Can't wait, have worked so hard throughout lockdown & desparate for a break!

MrsExpo · 18/06/2020 21:05

Already have (x2). September and October.

DefConOne · 18/06/2020 21:10

Probably. Got 9 nights holiday in Europe booked end of August which we will probably move to next year. If so we’ll look at camping in Cornwall if there is availability. We live in Devon so can do day trips if necessary but it’s not quite the same.

Pascha · 18/06/2020 21:12

We missed our June holiday, rebooked for next year but I'm a bit hesitant to book anything this year right now. If we do book anything it will only be a last minute campsite somewhere. I don't much like the idea of prebooking anything more substantial.

AdultierAdult · 18/06/2020 21:14

catspyjamas - I can't relate at all, and I've been all over the world. Last year we had a fab week and a half in York/Harrogate - museums, walking in surrounding countryside, gorgeous old pubs full of friendly locals, beautiful spa hotels. What's not to love?

I love the sun and have flown somewhere hot every year since I can remember (my dad is an Arab and I inherited his love of heat) but I think the UK has so much to offer in terms of culture, landscape and a beautifully temperate summer.

OP we're moving from Bucks to NI so we're going to do a 'staycation' to get to know our new area. Pubs open in Belfast (in part) in July so by August we're hoping we can have 2 weeks of eating/drinking out, enjoying local beaches and visiting museums if they're open. Also hoping to see my mum in Limerick, depending on Irish measures by then.

If we were still in England and lockdown is still in full force I'd be considering one of my favourite areas - Hope Valley, Peak District. Lovely walking though admittedly we usually go 'off peak' so it's very quiet.

Oysterbabe · 18/06/2020 21:22

Yeah we probably will. We had a nice break on the Isle of Wight last year and I'd be happy to do that again.

Nosuchluck · 18/06/2020 21:29

I’ve had 2 cruises cancelled so have booked a costal hotel for next month. It’s just for Myself and my DH. We’re having breakfast and dinner at the hotel so don’t have to worry about finding restaurants that are open. We’re hoping to do lots of costal walks and eat chips on the beach. We have a sea view room with a balcony which will be nice to use for a pre dinner drink.

Todaythiscouldbe · 18/06/2020 21:34

We have 3 properties on the Isle of wight booked for late August. At the moment we still plan to go, it is an 'outdoor living' type of place anyway so we can safely social distance and each part of the family have their own cottage to stay in.
We don't pay a deposit or anything else until it is confirmed as going ahead.

Madcats · 18/06/2020 21:45

I live in Bath.

Things are changing every day, but it is very easy to get food from a great number of restaurants and takeaways and a few pubs are selling beer. Some things need to be booked in advance, but plenty can be sourced promptly.

Ice cream and coffee shops are opening. Parks are open, but not playgrounds.

I'm not up to speed with what catering the local hotels are planning for guests, but you would have plenty of choices if you rented a self-catering place.

Blacksideupanddownagain · 18/06/2020 21:45

We're planning to house swap with a relative and their home for a few days. We'll each clean the houses before and after we arrive and depart. We plan to meet for socially distanced walk half way home with our relative too.

We'll walk, beach, visit the grounds of a local country house, cycle, low key stuff, but change of scene from home at least which we sorely need.

Food is stressing me out a bit as click and collect slots can be hard to find, we are avoiding take away, and we've not physically been inside a shop since lockdown started. We will probably take lots of food from home from our online delivery, and order some things in for our relatives for when they come here. We'll then only need a quick dash to local supermarket for few fresh bits.

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 19/06/2020 06:32

Maybe an overnight stay as we couldn’t go to our long haul one this month.
Otherwise planning to do the European one as scheduled. All countries have better status than the UK.

SeaOtterFluff · 19/06/2020 06:41

We've got a camping break booked for July not far from home and I can't wait. I need a break from work, television and drudgery! I know camping is most people's idea of torture but a change of scenery and routine is all I'm after.

macaronilemonpony · 19/06/2020 06:42

probably but nothing booked, we'll at least go to family in Ireland or Scotland

babydisney · 19/06/2020 06:44

Either I myself might, or myself and my partner, Im hoping for paris with a day or two at disneyland (my bday is september so hoping for october).

LadyWithLapdog · 19/06/2020 06:45

No. Day trips and saving money.

Peterbishopssarcasticsmile · 19/06/2020 06:46

No, we would need to use public transport to get anywhere which I'm no longer comfortable with.
I also worry we would end up quarantined in a holiday let or hotel if a sudden spike happened and with baby DS it just doesn't seem worth it
Going to watch and wait this year

pigeon999 · 19/06/2020 06:49

We have booked a cottage in Cornwall for a week in July and August separately. We can not wait to go!

We usually holiday overseas, France or Italy in the summer, but we won't be going this year. I am concerned about outbreaks, and the journey and a quick lockdown happening in either country, not to mention the lack of proper travel insurance. We will wait, and probably go away somewhere extra special in spring of next year.

I am glad to be going anywhere quite frankly. We plan to go to the beach, play games, have BBQs and try out the local restaurants. I am hoping we can hire boats by then and see the coast line, and wildlife. DDs will enjoy surfing and paddle boarding. I am not worried about crowds, we will look for quieter spots off the beaten track and take picnics, and do our research before we go.

I am feeling more and more optimistic that the planned stage 3 will go ahead, so I am already packing!! (leaving on the 4th) We need a break.

beela · 19/06/2020 07:05

No, probably not.

We usually have a UK holiday in the summer (our May trip abroad was obviously cancelled) and I would love to get away, but the thought of queueing up outside a different sainsbury for food, or socially distancing in the cafes (if they are even open) and not being able to let the dc make friends and play with other kids on the beach.... It's not really doing it for me.
