To only eat junk food (pregnancy)

Because it's all I seem to be able to stomach without feeling incredibly ill?

I am only early on in first tri (7wks). All I seem to be able to eat is shit. I can't stomach a full meal but I'm craving things like crisps.

Today I am ashamed to say I have eaten a whole MULTIPACK of crisps to myself. Like 8 bags of crisps. The saltier the better too.

I've also been craving tinned spaghetti like there is no tomorrow.

Did anyone else feel all they could keep down was junk food?

Ha I'm jealous you could eat. Had sever HG for the first 4 weeks at the beginning and the last 2 months at the end. Eat what the hell you want! Lol I even had a wee shandy or guiness when I could 😜

CoodleMoodle · 17/06/2020 20:01

First trimester with both of my DC I basically lived on bran flakes and Ritz crackers. Pot Noodles became involved at one point as well! But all of a sudden I could eat normally again and then I didn't stop. Stayed with DM for a bit when pregnant with DD (we were waiting for our house to bed ready) and drove her mad with constant stuffing my face and asking what we were planning to have for tea Blush DH says I wasn't as bad with DS but I do remember being hungry a lot.

Both DC came out normal sized and healthy!

whattodoandhow · 17/06/2020 20:19

First and second trimester all I could stomach were McDonald's breakfast, sausage and egg mcmuffin! Used to buy several each day so that I'd have something I could eat throughout the day once breakfast had ended. DS came out full term and no other issues. Can't stand the sight of mcmuffins now tho!!

Theyweretheworstoftimes · 17/06/2020 20:24

HG pregnancy only thing I could eat was McDonald's for 32 weeks.

Thought I was going to have a Mc Baby.

Baby was fine.

Camomila · 17/06/2020 20:26

I was advised by a midwife to drink slimfast shakes when I couldn’t face proper food as at least it had vitamins in.

I got told to drink milkshake last year, ideally complan but anything I could stomach was better than nothing.

TrashKitten10 · 17/06/2020 20:26

I was into all the salty snacks too. Had a hellish hour long commute to work and used to make a big grab bag of ready salted walkers last the hour eating them very slowly whilst driving to stop myself hurling. Coupled with fruit twist Fanta. At 7am Blush Needs must :)

SomewhereEast · 17/06/2020 20:44

Anecdotal I know, but I had nausea right through both pregnancies & couldn't face anything non-beige the whole time, but still had two big healthy babies. I did get a multivitamin down each day, & managed some very bland banana-based smoothies, but that was it really

Parmavioletmum · 17/06/2020 20:45

I had hypermesis the whole pregnancy but the first trimester just about all I could eat was subway and pizza. So thats pretty much all I ate haha

Sandybval · 17/06/2020 20:46

I just ate salt and vinegar crisps and mars bars for a few weeks, anything else made me sick. But once the nausea eased off I genuinely fancied quite healthy food. Just eat what gets you through at the moment.

xxxemzyxxx · 17/06/2020 20:55

I would just say eat what you can in 1st trimester. I lived off bbq crisps, cheese strings and satsumas for most of mine! At least one of them was fruit 😂

Wynston · 17/06/2020 20:56

I remember thinking how I would eat loads of fruit and veg and make excellent food choices......the reality was beige food.....little and often.....i was so poorly for weeks and if I got a vitamin down me I took that as a win.
I do vaguely drinking milkshakes at one point.
I used to feel so so hungry but just couldn't get it to stay down.
Enjoy those crisps!!

CaffiSaliMali · 17/06/2020 21:00

All my mother could stomach with me at the start was McDonald's fillet o' fish and strawberry milkshake. I was a robust baby at 7lbs 13 and don't seem to have suffered any ill effects.

Although, I was a fiend for fillet o' fish and strawberry milkshake as a child. Alas, I am now a vegetarian and can no longer partake Grin

Similarly, a colleague lived off crisps due to bad morning sickness and lost a lot of weight and her DD was a nice healthy weight at birth and remains fine.

It'll be fine OP, lots of women struggle to eat healthily in pregnancy due to feeling sick and go on to have healthy DC.

LuckyAmy1986 · 17/06/2020 21:05

I lived off salt and vinegar crisps and coke at the start, it was all I could keep down.

A (male) colleague told me I needed to eat fruit and veg, I really had to hold back from telling him to fuck off. If you haven't experienced morning sickness then you just don't get it.

Eat what you can keep down, take your vitamins and don't worry about it.

longcoffee · 17/06/2020 21:07

I'm at 7 weeks and can't stomach a proper meal. grazing is fine, but a plate of food make me all wobbly. Even dishing up for the family makes me queasy.

Nothing wildly exciting diet wise. Can't get enough fruit, but the smell of bananas - eugh! Mini cheddars have reached God-like status.

hamstersarse · 17/06/2020 21:07

There is a theory that the cravings for salty snacks is actually driven by a need for protein.

Could you stomach a steak, straight burger or some straight chicken?

ForTheCulture · 17/06/2020 21:21

I used to cry after managing to eat healthy on a good day then it all came up.

I soon realised it was better I ate something that stayed down to nourish my body and give me the energy to get through the day, cue crisps, breadsticks, toast, ginger nuts, mac Donald's milkshakes, Burger King, pickled beetroot, pumpkin leaves and oranges by the sackful (not together).

It got better in the second trimester and I could eat balanced meals but went to pot in the third trimester.

Just make sure you eat something and keep it down, it really doesn't matter what it is

Haworthia · 17/06/2020 21:22

Sounds normal to me - salty bland carbs were all
I could stomach too.

It’s temporary, so don’t fret about it.

ChangeThePassword · 17/06/2020 21:41

The only thing I don't like about it is turning my wee pink. It will likely give me a heart attack when I forget I've eaten a load of beetroot

Been there, more than once! One time I had a doctors appointment all lined up before I remembered, and had to phone back fine minutes later to cancel. I didn't tell them why... 😂

FreeFromDinoMeat · 17/06/2020 21:48

Omg someone mentioned Fanta fruit twist! I've been sending DH to the shop for bottles of that to have with my lunch too! I don't even usually drink it.

OP, my DP eats a whole multipack of crisps every day and he sure isn't pregnant!

Congrats on pregnancy!

thaegumathteth · 17/06/2020 21:52

I had HG for the whole 42 weeks. On the odd days I could eat I can assure you I ate nothing healthy. Potato scones, ready salted crisps and mince pies (the xmas kind). Also weirdly craved really bloody steaks but I never gave in as I'm vegetarian!

Shuckle · 17/06/2020 21:55

From 7 - 14 weeks I survived solely on white toast and mashed potato. And could only drink fizzy peach flavoured water. The day I realised my sickness had lifted I ate an entire chocolate selection box in one sitting and it was the most glorious moment of my life, my husband came home from work and took one look at me in a chocolate coma on the sofa surrounded by wrappers and decided it was safer not to ask. You've got loads of time to eat healthy, just do what you can now!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 17/06/2020 22:08

I lived on kebabs, chippy dinners, burgers and tinned hotdogs throughout my pregnancy.Ds came out perfect but I put 4 stone on!

AWryGiraffe · 17/06/2020 22:12

Just eat what gets you through and if you can manage something healthy then that's great.

I had a weird craving for those salty mugshot pasta things. And then developed a sweet tooth when I never had one before! I also wanted lots and lots of beige carbs.

Don't beat yourself up. Your baby will suck all the nutrients from you, like a teeny vampire, and will be fine.

BogRollBOGOF · 17/06/2020 22:12

I gave birth to 8lb 10 of Pot Noodle, KFC, ginger cookies and jelly/ custard pots.
The nausea was horrific. I longed to vomit for 4 months but could barely eat anything ressembling food to actually throw up. Very little could get past the gag reaction. I couldn't brush my teeth or mouthwash for days at a time. In the first half I went down from 9st 2 to 8st 7 while gaining bump. After 20 weeks my appetite improved (although it was only really the 3rd tri when I could face meat) and I went from 8st 7 to 13st in the next 19 weeks. Two stones were birthed, sweated out whatever over the immediate aftermath of birth and I sucessfully got my weight back down to 9st ready for round 2.

Second time I just ate whatever whim occured to me and felt better for that and it was a much more normal range of nausea.

It is really weird when only one food will do (and bloody annoying in the wilds of Ireland when your brain decides it's Greggs week Grin )
