To tell teachers bashers to go and complain to their own fucking schools

Frozenfan2019 · 17/06/2020 12:07

Aibu to be fed up to the back teeth of ignorant comments like "do your job like everyone else" and " it's your vocation" aimed at all and any teachers who happen to be on a thread. If you have a problem with the teaching provided by your own school contact them. People commenting have no idea of the workload that the people they are trolling online might be struggling with. It's bullying plain and simple and wouldn't be allowed to be aimed at other groups.

Do you honestly believe that every single teacher in the UK is lazy? If not why not contact YOUR school about the issues you have with YOUR child's teacher instead of starting yet another general teacher bashing thread.

As a teacher on here I have to say I have never been more demotivated. I work hard for my kids at school while also homeschooling my own three like so many of us. How dare you make me feel like I am failing because you have an issues, unfounded in some cases I am sure, with your school?

They are your children take some responsibility, contact the school if you have concerns and accept that most teachers are fired for the children they each but we don't make many of the decisions. They are made at a much higher level.

@earthyfire sounds like the teachers had been getting a lot of abuse of contact has been stopped

UmbrellaHat · 17/06/2020 18:22

YANBU to make it all about you, unless you recognise yourself -in which case maybe do a reality check on your own performance.
Otherwise, why defend bad practice in your own profession?
In my profession I would willingly call out those who let down the profession-would be unprofessional to do otherwise. So why do (some shouty) teachers defend poor professionalism?

UmbrellaHat · 17/06/2020 18:23

Typo -should have read YABVU of course.

Lancrelady80 · 17/06/2020 18:24

@Babyboomtastic

Of course teachers children matter, and it's hard caring for them whilst working from home. But no harder than most of the rest of us who are doing the same.
I wasn't saying it was harder. Fine example of not reading properly and jumping to "teachers think they have it harder."

What I was saying was in agreement with another pp who said keyworker provision wasn't available at her child's usual setting and she wasn't prepared to risk her young child's emotional wellbeing by plonking them in a setting neither she nor the child knew, with complete strangers, with no settling in sessions, when it had taken a long while to get her child settled in the first place. That's like saying, "right, it's my first day from maternity leave so I'll just leave my child here." Who would do that to their child? Why should we have to? (Parent to anxious child here, who still gets clingy at drop off.)

That's what I meant by saying some people seem to think our children don't matter.

Davincitoad · 17/06/2020 18:25

@LaurieMarlow well you proved my point exactly that someone would then turn it round to teacher bash and think they know better. Bravo. So you are saying that indeed you think all teachers are bad.

IrmaFayLear · 17/06/2020 18:28

It seems overall that secondary teachers have been better than primary school ones. I wonder why that is... Dd’s teachers (secondary) have been excellent, yet I’ve heard many complaints (in real life) about primary provision.

Are secondary teachers just more diligent, do they have better slts? I had a nosey at the local prep school website (up to 11 years) and I was astonished at the fantastic online provision with daily assemblies, interesting activities etc. I suppose if you are not delivering well enough to a paying customer you will get your arse kicked.

JimmyGrimble · 17/06/2020 18:31

Why yes Irma of course that’s what it is. Way to go.

Bottleup · 17/06/2020 18:31

How do you know we havent contacted our schools? I have and it's got me nowhere. Teacher bashing is absolutely not ok but what a lot of us are expressing is legitimate frustration about the fact our kids are being so poorly served. I am not annoyed at the individual teachers. But people saying 'they are your kids take responsibility for teaching them' is a real affront to working parents who cant teach their kids as they're working full time on their own jobs.

CallmeAngelina · 17/06/2020 18:33

It seems overall that secondary teachers have been better than primary school ones.

Whaat?! Evidence please! Or have you just made that up?

tinyem77 · 17/06/2020 18:34

I think, it's because some of us have experienced teachers that have posted how they're enjoying their garden, time with their kids, and haven't answered emails asking on progress on their children (3 weeks and counting). I understand we're all working with new guidelines, I work for Children's services, my workload had increased and I'm also homeschooling my children as my husband was originally furloughed and now there's no room for my kids at school.

My primary daughter's teacher at best sends a couple of pages of internet work and a coupe of pages of 'topic'. Nothing is ever marked, no feedback. Imagine if social services threw their hands up and said they had to home school so couldn't do their jobs. It's not only teachers that are working above and beyond at the moment.

I realise my children's school is probably the exception to the rule, my daughter has always been 'top of class' and because of my profession, teachers may have thought that she's ok, but, really?? Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, and the school have had no contact with me or my daughter since mid March. I could have had done anything to her, I hear on here about people not wanting to 'interfere'. If schools are closed and neighbours won't report, my workload will triple when they hi back to work, and that's a lot of children who have been let down.

Sorry, rant over

CallmeAngelina · 17/06/2020 18:34

IrmaFayLear Well done. You have single-handedly demonstrated the entire problem here on Mumsnet at the moment, and why the teachers on here are SO furious.

GuyFawkesDay · 17/06/2020 18:39

It's OK, Laurie is apparently retraining as a teacher.

She can come and show everyone the error of their ways.

Because of course, nobody doing the job knows better than she does 🤦‍♀️

Ylvamoon · 17/06/2020 18:41

I think it's a double edged sword. On one side you have some excellent teachers (& Schools) pulling out all the stops for children in their classes.

Then there are people like me, who know some people in the teaching profession who only work 3 out of 5 days = they are on a rota for KW children and home school provision & have 2 days off - I guess for preparing work wich looks like minimal effort! (see below)
On the other hand you have parents, tearing their hair out, struggling with home schooling, working and get very little help from teachers/ schools.

I have contacted DS school on several occasions 1) teacher only available on X days please only email on those days. 2) send link to BBC Bitezize. 3) every feedback is Well Done... not very constructive!!!!! 4) just follow the instructions on badly copied sheet. - Genius I would not have thought of that! At this point we are back at 2) for website link.

So yep teacher bashing is ripe, maybe it's justified maybe not. I really don't care, I just want DC back in education.

havefunpeleton · 17/06/2020 18:42

Ha ha and that's the other thing only the teachers on here seem to do @CallmeAngelina They seem to want to teach the whole of mumsnet and tell off the naughty parents!

You're wondering about my comprehension Grin

Seriously though the unions and a few teachers on here risk undermining the good will and respect of the country. It's a very risky and odd strategy and for what gain? Don't get it

macaronilemonpony · 17/06/2020 18:43

I have, they’re having too
Much fun gardening and baking to respond with anything resembling a plan ...

rumblefish23 · 17/06/2020 18:44

I am a special needs TA and I am back full time this week, I have been working as and when we have had SEN children at school, some SEN children do not understand social distancing and I have to wear PPE, I don't like wearing a face mask as it is very hot and I have to wear a face sheild, there have been some weeks I haven't been working and the comments I get have been really demoralising .

Each school has dealt with the covid disaster differently and to lump all schools and teachers as one bunch of lazy pisstakers grates my goat Angry

CallmeAngelina · 17/06/2020 18:52

Seriously though the unions and a few teachers on here risk undermining the good will and respect of the country. It's a very risky and odd strategy and for what gain? Don't get it.

No. You clearly don't.
Why is it a risky strategy? You (as a parent) need us more than we need you.

VashtaNerada · 17/06/2020 18:54

It seems overall that secondary teachers have been better than primary school ones.
Not my experience and a really unhelpful generalisation.
YANBU OP. Luckily in RL I’m hearing lots of praise for the work we’re doing. It’s a bit gutting to hear strangers slagging you off and making wild generalisations about how selfish and lazy we are but there will always be rude people on the internet. (Note: if you are selfish or lazy, you would not enjoy being a teacher! Nor would you survive the training, recruitment or performance management process).

IrmaFayLear · 17/06/2020 18:55
Confused

It is easier to teach secondary online than primary. I can’t imagine being a primary school teacher; I would have the screaming abdabs after half an hour.

But... some teachers have not stepped up to the plate. Maybe it’s a small minority, but they have nonetheless given some parents a poor impression which has been vented about on MN - a parenting site. As I said before, this crisis has exposed some teachers and indeed heads as, well, unenthusiastic and I think it’s entirely fair to have a rant about these people.

LavenderLilacTree · 17/06/2020 18:57

Teachers are all amazing. It's SUCH a hard job. I really wish all the moaners had to take a class themselves for a day and then deal with complaints from parents after Grin

JimmyGrimble · 17/06/2020 18:57

peleton
Good will and respect??? Where have you been looking.
I have been a teacher for over 20 years. My good will has:

  • furnished many classrooms with the thousands (yes thousands) of pounds I’ve spent of my own money ... because it’s for the kids
  • given up hours and hours of my own time to run after school clubs, catch ups, take kids to events etc ... because it’s for the kids
  • funded all cooking, DT and science experiments ... because it’s for the kids
  • bought presents, Easter eggs, dvds, treats, rewards for my classes ... because it’s for the kids.
  • given up lunch times, met with parents to try and help, run parent classes etc
All for the kids. I don’t think I’m unusual in this, in fact I know I’m not. I’m just a bog standard Primary school teacher. So excuse me if I find it depressing to see people on here attacking teachers for things that aren’t our fault. Maybe my good will has found its limit.
FourTeaFallOut · 17/06/2020 19:00

Is it moaning to point out that some children have lost months of education in a school that left them hanging while their luckier peers have had access to teachers, online resources and lessons?

FourTeaFallOut · 17/06/2020 19:02

Do people understand that for people to complain about inequity it is inherent to their logic that they understand that not all children have been cut adrift from their school?

YardleyX · 17/06/2020 19:08

Do you know what?

All the teachers that have failed to provide an education = work shy twats

All the teachers who continually defend this = work shy twats

All other teachers = many, many thanks for all you’ve done in very difficult circumstances

louisthetrumpetswan · 17/06/2020 19:10

YANBU.

If people could direct their complaints to the government, that would be grand.
