Bloody bollocking Hayfever

Iamnotminterested · 16/06/2020 20:26

Fine yesterday, not a sniffle, yet today has been bloody awful, think constant nose blowing and my eyes looking as though I've been crying all day :-(

Anyone else suffering? And what are your go-to remedies? (I'm in the North West btw).

Take an anti histamine before you even get up..
Usually need the loo about 5am. Take one then and I have noticed a massive reduction in symptoms!

Anamechanged · 16/06/2020 20:38

Beconase nasal spray is the only thing that works for me

And if I wash my face and beard frequently also makes a really big difference

JaneBofCartmel · 16/06/2020 20:40

I woke up with crusty eyes. I take an old style drowsy anti histamine as a sleeping tablet. Phenergan, they usually do the trick but the pollen has been really high. Hopefully this rain will dampen it down.

Ferrylass · 16/06/2020 20:41

I've a few friends swear by Vonny Bee? Might be worth a try!

lostintime17 · 16/06/2020 20:44

I have suffered with horrendous hay fever since childhood and have only in the last few years managed to get it totally under control taking Fexofenadine (prescribed by the Dr, not available over the counter), Avamys Nasal Spray and chromoglicate eye drops. I take them as soon as I get up in the morning and within 15 minutes my symptoms have subsided.

AriettyHomily · 16/06/2020 20:45

Beconase twice a day and Lortadine, religiously even if symptoms aren't bad that day as I find it impossible to get back on top of it again.

polkadotpixie · 16/06/2020 20:56

Nothing is helping mine tbh...I've got Fexofenadine, Piriton, Fluticasone Furoate nasal spray and Sodium Cromoglycate eye drops and I'm still suffering

I'm thinking about getting the steroid injection privately, it's about £75 but it'd be worth every penny if it works

SabrinaThwaite · 16/06/2020 21:08

Teenage DS suffers badly and finds that Piriton doesn’t help much, but children’s Benadryl works.

FedUpofLockdown123 · 16/06/2020 21:14

I started a thread earlier and a few posters recommended Beconase nasal spray so I went and got some (2 for £6 in Tesco at the moment) and it really has helped. You're supposed to use in the morning and at night but by the time I got some it was afternoon and I started getting symptoms again a few hours later so had to take my second dose. I'm hoping it will be different tomorrow when I take my first dose before I get up. I'm still looking for a decent antihistamine though so will be following this thread.

OneFootintheRave · 16/06/2020 21:19

Cetirizine 10mg every day religiously. Sometimes I break it in half and have half at supper and half in the morning. Never a whole one last thing at night or you will wake up parched.

Combine with opticrom eye drops in the morning and daily beconase. As said upthread you need to maintain this to keep symptoms at bay.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 16/06/2020 21:21

I get terrible hayfever and have to attack it from all angles to keep it under control. I take cetirizine daily, eyedrops for when they get itchy, nasal spray to stop the sneezing episodes and an inhaler for when I get wheezy. Grass pollen is the worst culprit for me. Some days, if I don't keep up with the medication, it's so bad I can barely breathe or even see because my eyes constantly run and swell up due to the itching.

Andiwilltrytofixyou · 16/06/2020 21:21

Also North West, last two days have been terrible. Taking tablets plus spray and it's making no difference, plus my eyes are sore. Going to ring the doctors tomorrow and try and get something stronger as its kicking my asthma off and its not good to be going around coughing at the moment.

Iamnotminterested · 17/06/2020 10:09

Thanks everyone, some new things to try there.

I'm fairly fortunate in that my hayfever is just pollen (?) from certain trees, and only lasts a couple of weeks - but after the accusatory supermarket stares at my sneezing, I realised that masks and face coverings were my friend!

Deelish75 · 17/06/2020 10:23

I'm in the South East and (according to the BBC) the pollen count has been very high and set to continue.
It feels different this year though. Usually I wake up with a blocked but streaming nose, itchy threat and ears and feeling awful, but this year I'm not too bad in the morning, it's late afternoon it really starts to affect me although I'm not suffering with my nose. I've heard a few people say their hay fever is worse this year, wondering if it's down to less pollution? Anybody else?

I take loratadine 10mg once a day.

starrynight87 · 17/06/2020 10:23

Mine is horrendous too, the advice of closing all windows doesn't really help either!

Vaseline around my nose seems to help a little. Wary of injection as it said it's a steroid that if it produces bad side effects they can't do anything about it.

mummabubs · 17/06/2020 10:29

My husband suffers badly with this and after the hot weather a few weeks ago he was miserable. He finally called the GP and they've prescribed him new tablets and a nasal spray that's prescription only and they've made such a difference. (apparently the GP said that if you've taken the same antihistamine for years then it can become less effective over time). Might be worth calling your GP?

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 17/06/2020 10:39

I take a cetirizine every night, and if I wake up full of it (bogey nose/froggy throat/goopy eyes) I take a loratidine then. I keep thinking that swapping to a piriton at bedtime might be an option to deal with some menopausal insomnia too :o Just a bit worried I might do a Sleeping Beauty and fall asleep for a fortnight cos that used to knock me out completely.

Also started with Murine Eye Mist... I cba with drops, and this is very straightforward, and compatible with lenses.

Interestingly (or maybe not) I find it worsens if I do not wear my lenses, so I think they act as a barrier to the pollen for me. I guess maybe it goes for my eyes rather than anything else??

The Mayo Clinic website has a comprehensive list of treatments. If you're suffering every season or your symptoms are severe you could ask for a referral to an immunologist. Drugs like Fenofexadine are lifesavers for chronic sufferers , they work within half an hour and shut down all the sneezing/ itching/ runny nose & eyes. There's also a immunology therapy which is a series of injections but you have to start it before or right at the start of the hay fever season, so March in the UK

Just to add
Basic self help include showering in the evening to get rid of pollen deposits before sleeping. Steam also helps to get the pollen out of your nose & eyes.
Using a tumble dryer for bedding and clothes. Laundry dried outside will be pollen coated.
Using an air purifier (hpac) in rooms where you spend most time.
Using synthetic filled duvets and pillows. Washing them regularly.
Some people find that air ionisers also help
Keeping your windows shut, especially in bedrooms.
Keeping well hydrated

DMCWelshcakes · 17/06/2020 10:55

@LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow

I find that with my lenses too!

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 17/06/2020 11:01

@DMCWelshcakes ...they save me from onion tears too...the DRAMA when i forget and chop onions with my specs on....

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 17/06/2020 20:05

My right eye looks like I have been punched. Have taken Fexo this morning, Cetrizine this afternoon and used eye drops and cold compresses, and it still hurts like an absolute bastard.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 17/06/2020 20:15

Any tips for children? My 9yo is suffering right now.

HibiscusPot · 17/06/2020 20:23

I’ve suffered in hell for years, but suddenly got it under control. Beconase nasal spray and Loratadine daily, then if going to a park a fast acting Benadryl. Experiment a bit. Fexofenidine was previously my best fix. It sounds dramatic, but I feel like I have my life back!!
