About the use of “myself”

crispysausagerolls · 15/06/2020 20:03

Yes it’s petty, yes it’s stupid, yes there have been multiple threads on it but ffs i have just opened 3 threads in a row where people say “myself and DH” or “DS and myself”!

STOP ITTTTTT!!!!!!! 😬😬😬😭😭😭🙈🙈🙈

It’s almost as annoying as the use of caps lock and emojis 😄

I was pulled up on my spelling of judgemental

Where did I “poke fun of you”?

"Use to" instead of "used to" is another one that baffles me. It's so basic!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/06/2020 08:21

I see a lot of ‘worse’ instead of ‘worst’.
Is it wretched autocorrect, or do people really not know the difference?

IMO it’s rather a different thing from ‘myself‘, ‘bare’ with me, etc.

FlamingFircones · 17/06/2020 08:22

How should the Labour Party thing have been worded?

I received this email from the labor party a while ago:

Join Keir and I to talk about what we can all do to support each other as part of Loneliness Awareness Week.

Aside from my ignorance about this ^^ may I add to the coffers the misuse of the word mortified. Very annoying.

clary · 17/06/2020 08:34

flamingfircones "join Keir and me" - you wouldn't say "join I for a discussion..." would you? Taking out the extra words often helps.

MzHz · 17/06/2020 08:57

@DisobedientHamster

Where has it come from??

From the Land of Would Of/Could Of/Should Of, Gifting As A Verb, Reaching Out Instead of Contacting and Other Wank.

This!

Absolutely this. Grin

MzHz · 17/06/2020 08:59

I used to have predominantly estate agents as clients.

Myselfism was practically at epidemic level.

If I ever got an email that said ‘reaching out’ though instead of contacting, it would never receive a response.

Encourage the good, ignore the bad.

@whatshebininagain

I love Bryan Adams's song "Run to You"

But the second line makes me wince.

"She thinks my love for her will never die
But that'd change if she ever found out about you and I"

I tolerate it for the sake of the rhyme.

What about Tom Odell?

Grow old with me
Let us share what we see
And oh the best it could be
Just you and I

I can't quite get my head around the fact that nobody pointed out to him that if he used the correct grammar in the last line, it would actually rhyme.

Language evolves. One of the factors is how we communicate. We now increasingly communicate by electronic format where the subtly of non verbal signals are lost. To counter that we are developing ways to compensate, one of which is the use of a reflexive pronoun to indicate a more connected relationship. The over use is anoying, as is any overuse of any word, but there are valid reasons why it has come into common usage in this manner.

Abbccc · 17/06/2020 09:47

Language does evolve. But you wouldn't be able to use that excuse to get a higher grade in your English GCSE.

crispysausagerolls · 17/06/2020 10:11

Language evolves, usually for the sake of ease. Using myself instead of me is longer. It serves 0 useful function and makes people sound stupid. That’s not really language evolution.

Abbccc · 17/06/2020 10:15

I forgot the annoying use of a question mark after the statement "You do realise that......?"

Menaimum · 17/06/2020 11:06

OP "...judgemental arsehole, but I'm also right!" Me too!!! 😃

Menaimum · 17/06/2020 11:31

As a first language English-but-foreign speaker this is the sort of thing that really interests me. When I first landed in Britain I noticed MYSELF being used "wrongly" but thought it was regional to the North East. I went to check and found this delightful rabbit hole: www.bl.uk/british-accents-and-dialects
No answer but so much content!

BashStreetKid · 17/06/2020 20:43

To counter that we are developing ways to compensate, one of which is the use of a reflexive pronoun to indicate a more connected relationship

But it achieves the reverse. And, in any event, I am quite sure that few if any people who misuse it do for that reason.

WinnieWonder · 17/06/2020 20:50

I dont think it makes people sound stupid.
Why does it annoy you so much?

crispysausagerolls · 17/06/2020 21:41

@winniewonder

If you don’t know, you’ll never know and I can’t explain it 🙈

Drives me totally up the wall!!

It's a flaming chest of DRAWERS Angry

BashStreetKid · 17/06/2020 23:36

@WinnieWonder

I dont think it makes people sound stupid. Why does it annoy you so much?
It really does sound stupid. Try listening to Cabin Pressure to discover that for yourself.
Zisforstripyoss · 17/06/2020 23:49

DC's teacher uses it about the class teddy - "teddy and myself miss you all". NO!!! Drives me bonkers.

suchclearwater · 17/06/2020 23:52

There is offensive talk about others ( call centre staff, estate agents-really?) on this thread. Some of you are coming across like sanctimonious snobs.

Legoandloldolls · 18/06/2020 00:03

As a dyslexic I find it fascinating that people can get so worked up about this. If I can read back what I write and understand what I write then it's all good.

I have a biology degree and was a computer programmer ( ironically I can talk PC talk which is rare among most).

Also i swear i was never taught punctuation at school. It completely by pasted me and my also degree level sister. Pre Ofsted I guess.

Cant spell and never will. I can do lots of other very clever things. No one is perfect. Can you design, create and publish a government website that reads and writes to s SQL server database that you also created? Can you answer a PMQ during a UK emergency for parliament sitting in a hours time that is needed for the priminster?

I can.

But I cant spell. Dont mean "myself" is thick 😂

Legoandloldolls · 18/06/2020 00:06

Also this site is pretty shit in that you cant proof read and change your mistakes. Theres no spell check which I really need to string a coherent sentence together ( also I suspect my android isn't helping matters).

Institutkarite · 18/06/2020 00:10
