About the use of “myself”

Yes it’s petty, yes it’s stupid, yes there have been multiple threads on it but ffs i have just opened 3 threads in a row where people say “myself and DH” or “DS and myself”!

This is why I annoys me so much - it has come from one idiot who used it, thinking it made them sound smart. Then other people just copied it, thinking the same. NO ONE learnt it in school. Also it reminds me of a job I had in an office where this very, very annoying man used it and thought he sounded like a genius. gets twitchy at the recollection

Argh! I would never want to offend anyone with dyslexia or anything like that. However, I have ASD and sometimes people's writing is so bad I can't decipher it, because my brain fixates on the poor grammar and spelling. I then lose the meaning. Don't even get me started on the abomination that is ”alot"!

It comes from people not being taught the correct use of pronouns. My sister actually says and writes, “John’s and I’s’ anniversary.....it’s horrifying. But it’s also the mark of someone who hasn’t read.

But that’s what I don’t understand; no one has been taught incorrectly at school. It’s very clearly not something a teacher would teach you to say, because it is wrong.

The John and I/John and me type thing I have a bit more understanding for. It’s very simple but people also get it wrong. Sometimes people think there is a blanket rule and it’s always “X and I”, and that “me” is never correct. Obviously this is wrong but it’s no where near as irritating and randomly inserting MYSELF into sentences where it doesn’t make a lick of sense.

Although i know a teacher who doesn’t know the difference between “brought” and “bought”, so fuck knows really.

I've been on a crusade about this for 20 years. Totally lost battle. It was being used by people as far back as the 1930s.

Along with "impacting" as a verb - completely lost battle too.

"Excited for" when people mean "excited about" nearly lost.

And "gifting" as a verb. Lost.

Aargh! It winds me up no end but in some ways it’s almost funny hearing people In call centres tying themselves up in knots with ‘yourselves’ and ‘myself’. It’s like they want to sound posh or something but they actually sound like knobs.

I agree that no one has been taught this. I think people find it difficult to begin with and then they don’t read. Most of my learning of grammar was enforced by extensive reading and I believe that’s key to truly learning grammar. Maybe I’m wrong.

Apologies. Really difficult not to correct the person in question. I used to just passive aggressively repeat the sentence back using the correct word. “Really? That’s what you BOUGHT? Lovely”
