About the use of “myself”

crispysausagerolls · 15/06/2020 20:03

Yes it’s petty, yes it’s stupid, yes there have been multiple threads on it but ffs i have just opened 3 threads in a row where people say “myself and DH” or “DS and myself”!

STOP ITTTTTT!!!!!!! 😬😬😬😭😭😭🙈🙈🙈

It’s almost as annoying as the use of caps lock and emojis 😄

My blood boils every time I see it too, OP.

DysonFury · 15/06/2020 20:05

YANBU

BobbinThreadbare123 · 15/06/2020 20:07

It's ridiculous. I hate it but someone will no doubt be along to tell you you're a disgusting bitch for mentioning it and to get into Pedants' Corner.

crispysausagerolls · 15/06/2020 20:07

@dysonfury

Excellent name

@BobbinThreadbare123

It’s a corner I will happily sit in, as the other occupants won’t use MYSSEEELLLFFFFFFF 😬

theyoungandtherestless · 15/06/2020 20:10

Well if it's in context ("I bought clothes for myself and DS") then YABU. If not ("myself and DS went to the park") then YANBU at all and I will sit in pedants' corner with you!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 15/06/2020 20:11

Where has it come from??

It infuriates me every single time.

crispysausagerolls · 15/06/2020 20:13

@mumsiedarlingrevolta

This is why I annoys me so much - it has come from one idiot who used it, thinking it made them sound smart. Then other people just copied it, thinking the same. NO ONE learnt it in school. Also it reminds me of a job I had in an office where this very, very annoying man used it and thought he sounded like a genius. gets twitchy at the recollection

OP posts:
crispysausagerolls · 15/06/2020 20:13

@theyoungandtherestless

It’s never used correctly.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 15/06/2020 20:15

I see it a lot at work - myself will contact yourself to catch up, going forward... Can you send that to myself?
Argh! I would never want to offend anyone with dyslexia or anything like that. However, I have ASD and sometimes people's writing is so bad I can't decipher it, because my brain fixates on the poor grammar and spelling. I then lose the meaning. Don't even get me started on the abomination that is ”alot"!

Toilenstripes · 15/06/2020 20:20

It comes from people not being taught the correct use of pronouns. My sister actually says and writes, “John’s and I’s’ anniversary.....it’s horrifying. But it’s also the mark of someone who hasn’t read.

AriadnesFilament · 15/06/2020 20:23

I detest it.
Fury-inducing.
It’s awful.

crispysausagerolls · 15/06/2020 20:28

@Toilenstripes

But that’s what I don’t understand; no one has been taught incorrectly at school. It’s very clearly not something a teacher would teach you to say, because it is wrong.

The John and I/John and me type thing I have a bit more understanding for. It’s very simple but people also get it wrong. Sometimes people think there is a blanket rule and it’s always “X and I”, and that “me” is never correct. Obviously this is wrong but it’s no where near as irritating and randomly inserting MYSELF into sentences where it doesn’t make a lick of sense.

It sounds pretentious but really bad and stupidly so 🤦🏻‍♀️😬

crispysausagerolls · 15/06/2020 20:29

Although i know a teacher who doesn’t know the difference between “brought” and “bought”, so fuck knows really.

I've been on a crusade about this for 20 years. Totally lost battle. It was being used by people as far back as the 1930s.

Along with "impacting" as a verb - completely lost battle too.

"Excited for" when people mean "excited about" nearly lost.

And "gifting" as a verb. Lost.

I need a new hobby. Or to get into the Pedant's corner.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 15/06/2020 20:31

Yanbu its execrable.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 15/06/2020 20:31

How does one get into Pedant's corner?

EmbarrassedUser · 15/06/2020 20:32

Aargh! It winds me up no end but in some ways it’s almost funny hearing people In call centres tying themselves up in knots with ‘yourselves’ and ‘myself’. It’s like they want to sound posh or something but they actually sound like knobs.

Toilenstripes · 15/06/2020 20:34

@crispysausagerolls
I agree that no one has been taught this. I think people find it difficult to begin with and then they don’t read. Most of my learning of grammar was enforced by extensive reading and I believe that’s key to truly learning grammar. Maybe I’m wrong.

AdultierAdult · 15/06/2020 20:36

Brought and bought is the one that really makes me eye twitch.

Wish you hadn’t bought it to my attention.

crispysausagerolls · 15/06/2020 20:37

It’s like they want to sound posh or something but they actually sound like knobs

This is the most apt and beautiful description of how I feel. Thank you. I will save it in my heart 😂

@toilenstripes

You aren’t wrong, reading is so important.

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland

Damn, you taught me a new word.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 15/06/2020 20:37

If you want to get in to Pedants' Corner you have to know that there is more than one pedant there...

crispysausagerolls · 15/06/2020 20:38

@AdultierAdult

Apologies. Really difficult not to correct the person in question. I used to just passive aggressively repeat the sentence back using the correct word. “Really? That’s what you BOUGHT? Lovely”

She probably thought I was using it incorrectly. Or a bitch. Either one.

OP posts:
livefornaps · 15/06/2020 20:44

I usually hear it used wince-inducingly by sneery and patronising men droning on.

"You'll be hearing from myself" shut UP i never want to hear from you again
