Looking for support for my son and haven’t got a clue.

A psychiatrist is not necessarily better than a psychologist, they are different. If he can feel happier without drugs that would probably be better than taking drugs to reduce the anxiety without addressing the causes. Generally psychiatrists don't have as much training in therapy so wouldn't have the skills that a psychologist would have.

These are the right links now!

Batters3aPark · 13/06/2020 20:38

They all seem to be counsellors and psychotherapists not clinical psychologists.

The British Psychological Society (BPS) will have links to clinical psychologists.

Op, Above is a list of psychologists in your area who do private work. Of course there may be many more but this is the site I'm registered with.

popim · 13/06/2020 20:49

I think that's fine to not be a clinical psychologist. It's important not to get too hung up on that part and find someone who is recommended or that your son likes.

I speak from personal experience and have seen various professional from CBT nurses through to psychiatrists who deliver psychotherapy. The key is finding somebody your son can talk to and who he finds helpful.

I would start with the basics, male or female therapist - which would he prefer?

Does he want to talk to someone?

Have a read around the issues he is experiencing because it is more common than you think and it will help you both understand a bit better.

OP you have received good advice above. One thing I wanted to add for anyone reading/ thinking about trying to hire a psychological professional - there are only certain terms that are legally protected and therefore mean you've had a certain amount of training (including Chartered Psychologist, Clinical Psychologist and Educational Psychologist).

Other terms you may see such as "psychologist" or "psychoanalyst" or "behavioural therapist" etc are not legally protected. Most people using them will have some kind of qualification but you must be very cautious about what qualifications they have.

Also to pick up on someone who had suggested Clinical Psychologists do not work with children - this is incorrect. They qualify at a doctoral level "across the lifespan" (with children, adults, people with Learning Disabilities and Older Adults), then tend to specialise after their doctorate. So OP would be seeking a Clinical Psychologist who specialises in children and young people.

Batters3aPark · 13/06/2020 21:12

Do they tralala that is good to know. They sent me the cv I couldn’t find registered on that site but the case handler has been so patient and helpful. They have clinical psycologists. Is it a company or just a place for CP to advertise?

You lot have been so helpful.

This might be a good resource if there is one local to you. As pp mentioned, many people work private and NHS. You can also go in on profile and check background. I also agree that your best course of action is clinical psychologist but also possibly GP if you think medication is necessary.

Brokenchair1 · 13/06/2020 21:45

Not sure why link doesn't work. Google the priory group

2020times · 13/06/2020 22:02

Yes if it's local that Bristol one looks good / they're all appropriately trained by the looks of it.

There is no real way of finding a good one unless you know someone from word of mouth. Generally though, I would say most HCPC accredited clinical psychologists are of a good standard though. Then you're son just has to feel comfortable with the person.

I would consider going to the GP for possible medication too though

EmeraldShamrock · 13/06/2020 22:12

Is he taking any anti anxiety medication the reason I went to a psychiatrist over a psychologist I was advised by ADHD Ireland to go direct it was the same price they knew I wasn't flush.
I'm waiting on an assessment of need 2years, DS has a sna through senco has daily violent tantrums.
I didn't get medication except melatonin bit he is in the loop if I need it in the future.
Do you think if your DS meets like minded people he'll feel better, I'd google teenage gay support groups hopefully they'll offer counselling or a friendly group.
I use OT groups it is expensive but CAMHS just can't provide a decent service here.

This support group looks good.

hettie · 13/06/2020 22:17

Hi,
I'm sorry it's so confusing op. Both clinical psychologists and counseling psychologists seem most appropriate for your needs. Both undertake a minimum of 6 yes training in at least two therapies and across differing settings. After qualifying they will likely specialise in older adults, adults or children and young people or areas like drug and alcohol or forensic services and do further training in their specialist area.
If you are in Bristol try

TheDaydreamBelievers · 13/06/2020 23:13

As @hettie said, a Counselling Psychologist could also be a great fit. Again, it is a legally protected title although please note a 'counsellor' is not the same and is not a legally protected title. I appreciate it's so confusing if you aren't in the field
