Pcos and want children

Dija89 · 12/06/2020 14:23

Hi everyone hope you all are well. I'm new to mumset. Just need some positive vibes. Since I started my periods I have never been regular. The longest i have been without a period is 4 months. I was diagnosed with pcos 2 years ago through blood test and a scan. The scan showed i had cysts (although i did have a period a week later so dont know if that has an impact) anyway fast forward to this year I'm getting married and want children straight away with my now bf. I need some tips and advise . Really feeling down as I dont know if I will find it difficult to conceive. I've always wanted children. Below are my blood test results which I have no idea what it means can someone shed some light please . My plasma glucose levels were normal which I dont understand what this means in terms of pcos my FSH was 6.7 and my LH was 26.3 . Doctor said my testosterone was a little high. I'll be very grateful if someone can shed some light my way.

Are you overweight? Losing weight can help.

EmeraldShamrock · 12/06/2020 14:32

My Dsis was diagnosed with PCOS in her teens it turned out she was a misdiagnosed, in her 20's she could afford a private endrocrologust lots of testing she has hashimoto's attacking her thyroid affecting hormones hence the weight gain, heavy period, dark coarse facial hair. Hashimoto's also makes extremely difficult to get pregnant
She had 2 DC naturally.
Fingers crossed for you.

Dija89 · 12/06/2020 14:36

@TestingTestingWonTooFree I am 2 and half stone overweight. My bmi now is 27.5

So glad to hear she fell naturally .

I was diagnosed with PCOS at age 18 and was told to try for children sooner rather than later. I became pregnant at 40 after three months of ttc. Had DC and became pregnant again at 42 but miscarried and did not ttc again after that. It is possible to conceive naturally but everyone is different.

The best thing you can do right now is to get down to a healthy weight as that will have an impact on ttc with this condition. Have a look at the Blood Sugar Diet principles of low carb and high protein to get your blood sugar levels under control and achieve a healthy weight.

Good luck.

Dija89 · 12/06/2020 15:34

Thisischaos , were your periods regular ?

I was diagnosed with PCOS in my early 20's, but carried on taking the 'pill' to standardise my hormones. Got married and TTC when 38 and became pregnant straight away. Your consultant should be able to advise you on this, and there will be lots of books out there too (there will be lots of info on here too). Good luck.

Dija89 · 12/06/2020 16:09

Secondary buzz how regular were your periods before taking the pill?

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 12/06/2020 16:13

I have PCOS lost shed loads of weight by intensive cardio workouts, and eating a low cal, low sugar, low refined carb diet suitable for insulin resistance, prior to that my bloods were worst than yours and my testosterone levels were causing all kinds of unwanted symptoms. I got married and fell pregnant five weeks later with no medical intervention

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 12/06/2020 16:14

Without the pill I sometimes went six months without a period , once I lost the weight my cycles were 38-41 days and I skipped the odd one but generally much much better

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 12/06/2020 16:16

I did get gestational diabetes though and that wasn't fun, but pretty common if you have PCOS

Norabird · 12/06/2020 16:17

I have PCOS and three children. Don't despair but prepare yourself that it may take longer than for other people. All three of mine were conceived naturally after losing weight. That's the single thing that is most likely to help you. Evidently it is the proportion of weight you lose - eg lose 10% of your weight that makes the difference, rather than the need to get to a specific weight.

Good luck

Diet is good to encourage ovulation as fat is hormonally active. I conceived while dieting both times. I gain weight easily but keep it in the normal bracket as much as I can, period now average 35-40 days. I didn’t struggle at all and conceived without trying - unplanned first and second immediately after coming off the mini pill.

You may be surprised that it isn’t a struggle after all. If it is you can get medication to induce ovulation but still conceive the natural way.

Perkyduck131 · 12/06/2020 16:27

I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2014 after a year without a period since coming off the pill. A friend was going through similar and went to a nutritionist who managed to help her regulate her cycle. I saw the same person who made some tweaks to my diet and also suggested I take a myo insotal (may not be correct spelling!) based supplement so started taking the nutri advanced mega fem mix. My periods returned regularly a month later and have been like clock work ever since- I have two children now. Strangely, a fair few of my friends were diagnosed with PCOS based on scans and blood tests around a similar time and have all gone on to have children without intervention. I realise for some it is a much harder journey, but just sharing my personal experience. Good luck x

I was diagnosed as a teen and cycle would be anything between 40-100+ days! Last June decided to TTC aged 27 thinking if we had a baby before 30 that would be just incredibly amazing. Fast forward to this June, I’m 39 weeks pregnant tomorrow! Good luck Flowers

SecondaryBurnzzz · 12/06/2020 16:38

@Dija89 they were regular as clockwork, my PCOS issue was hairiness, which is why I got diagnosed in the first place. Maybe only one ovary was polycystic.. it was such a long time ago I can't remember. sorry.

SoloMummy · 12/06/2020 16:40

Fsh is in normal range but lh is elevated.

Snowpaw · 12/06/2020 16:46

I would recommend your partner has a sperm test sooner rather than later if you try for a while and don’t have success. I have PCOS, we tried for a year, went to docs. Partner had low sperm count too it emerged, so eventually they referred us for IVF (two rounds available in my area). They said there would be no point prescribing me clomid etc as we still might not get pregnant due to the low sperm count factor. We had 1 round of IVF and produced 8 embryos and the first one they put back very happily, grew into my lovely toddler. It was not a particularly easy road but we got there.

Hi OP

I have PCOS - I don't even have periods unless I take drugs to make me bleed. I now have 3 children - one at 32, one at 35 and one at 37 (I'm 42 now). I did have help to get pregnant the first and second times - clomid the first time and the second time, when clomid didn't work, they moved on to another drug (sorry, can't remember which one!) and that worked. After I'd had my second and breast fed for a year, I told my dh that I wouldn't bother to go back on the pill because I wasn't ovulating naturally anyway so there was no point... ...yup, became pregnant within 3 months without any help! It was a shock but a lovely surprise!

So it can happen. One thing that I had to do was to take Metformin, which is a drug linked to diabetes because there is a link to PCOS and diabetes and keeping your sugar levels down helps you to lose weight as well, which is a nice benefit (not that I was hugely overweight, but I was carrying a bit extra, and PCOS also makes it harder to lose weight in case you didn't know that). They also made me take progesterone suppositories for a bit once they knew that I actually was pregnant.

Good luck. If you want to get pregnant, keep pushing your GP to refer you - there is a lot of help out there.

newphoneswhodis · 12/06/2020 16:52

Lose weight. Honestly i got pregnant the month my bmi went into the normal range.
Good luck.

JaneDoe7 · 12/06/2020 16:53

I had no periods for a year after coming off the pill & was diagnosed with PCOS. I lost 20% of my bodyweight (low carb / blood sugar diet), took Metformin and also Inofolic. My son is almost 2. Good luck!

Dija89 · 12/06/2020 16:53

Thank you everyone for all the encouraging messages. It has really out ease on my mind. I will continue my diet so far I have lost half a stone will start gym once they are opened. @Perkyduck131 I've just started taking ovasitol a week ago so I'm hoping that with my diet change will normalise my periods x

Both my ovaries are polycystic. Very irregular periods, could go months without. Tried for baby for years with one partner, then a year with another who I was engaged to, late teens/early twenties (seems crazy now, I was so young but I think being diagnosed at 19 and told I may never conceive naturally made it feel urgent?) after my fiance left me at 23 I actually accepted that I may never have kids, let go of my fear and stress. I don't know what changed, but at 24 my fertility turned on? I now have 4 children, get pregnant easily, but my ovaries are in terrible shape. Surgeons have seen them during c sections and one came to talk to me about it. So, I have polycystic ovaries, and have 4 children but can't really offer any advice except trying to chill, which can feel impossible I know. And try and lower your sugar intake when you do get pregnant as with all my pregnancies I've had diabetes symptoms but not actually had diabetes, something to do with the link between pcos and insulin. Good luck OP x

Itisbetter · 12/06/2020 16:56

I agree, lose weight, regulate your sleep

scrunchSE18 · 12/06/2020 16:56

I was diagnosed in my 20s - very irregular periods. ttc at 28 and eventually pregnant at 32 (with clomid). I did have gestational diabetes though which was not fun. Periods were a lot more regular following birth of ds. At 38 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and my Diet and treatment obviously made me more fertile (metformin) and I had Dd at 39.

lockdownalli · 12/06/2020 16:57

Victoria Beckham and Jules Oliver both have PCOS and both have larger than average families.

Good luck Flowers
