Pcos and want children

Dija89 · 12/06/2020 14:23

Hi everyone hope you all are well. I'm new to mumset. Just need some positive vibes. Since I started my periods I have never been regular. The longest i have been without a period is 4 months. I was diagnosed with pcos 2 years ago through blood test and a scan. The scan showed i had cysts (although i did have a period a week later so dont know if that has an impact) anyway fast forward to this year I'm getting married and want children straight away with my now bf. I need some tips and advise . Really feeling down as I dont know if I will find it difficult to conceive. I've always wanted children. Below are my blood test results which I have no idea what it means can someone shed some light please . My plasma glucose levels were normal which I dont understand what this means in terms of pcos my FSH was 6.7 and my LH was 26.3 . Doctor said my testosterone was a little high. I'll be very grateful if someone can shed some light my way.

I was diagnosed with PCOS at 21. I got pregnant first month ttc on honeymoon at age 31.

You cannot predict when/if you can get pregnant. Balance of not rushing but not waiting forever either.

Mammyofasuperbaby · 12/06/2020 17:03

I have pcos and very irregular periods. I have all the typical signs of it but I conceived my first child after 6 weeks, second after a year (miscarried) third after 3 months (mmc) and my 4th after 6 months and I'm currently 30 weeks.
There is always hope but it may be a long and trying journey. Same advice as above - lose weight, take supplements and be active (helps mental health) and it puts you in better stead for success

I have PCOS. Totally irregular periods from age 16 to 27. Was ttc at 26 and longest was nearly a year. BMI was about 24, I was put on metformin by gynaecologist and had 2 periods and a pregnancy. No periods with breastfeeding and then restarted metformin to conceive next 2 children. Got pregnant 4th time without. So now 4 children, not breastfeeding and I try to eat fairly low carb and get periods every 1-2 months, BMI around 21.

Not sure if this helps but this is my experience. I have a friend with PCOS and 3 kids and my cousin has PCOS and 3 kids both didn't need any intervention, just took a bit longer to conceive. I don't know anyone who has PCOS and infertility.

I’m pregnant with DC2. Third pregnancy.
I was diagnosed with PCOS at 18. My cycles have varied from regular to 18 months between bleeds, unsure if I was ovulating. I absolutely put down my conceptions to weight loss.

Dija89 · 12/06/2020 19:58

@PawPatrolMakesMeDrink were your periods regular when you conceived?

Lightline · 12/06/2020 20:22

I’ve got PCOS had several scans over the years and each time my ovaries are ‘classic’ PCOS. My periods are irregular. I’ve had two children a boy and a girl without assistance other than nutritional supplements when I was trying for my second.
I hope you find that you don’t have trouble to conceive as well.

ShastaBeast · 12/06/2020 20:53

I was warned that you can ovulate without a period. And that breastfeeding may have helped clear the PCOS and increased fertility - so if you breastfeed over a year and want a small gap you may find it helps to try while still breastfeeding.

LilaButterfly · 12/06/2020 21:08

I was diagnosed at 17 when I went to see a doctor because i havent had my period. They put me on the pill and i tool it until i got married at 21. We didnt necessarily want kids right away, but i came off the pill because we knew it probably wouldnt happen easily.
I only had my period every 6months or so. Never got pregnant. At 27 we decided we wanted to try. Did 3 cycles of clomid, which didnt help. Then my specialist recommended injections. Fell pregnant first attempt.
Fell pregnant again naturally with no help when DC 1 was 7 months old. I never even had a period before that.
DC 2 is 4 now and my periods have been completely regular each month like clockwork for the last 2-3 years.

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 12/06/2020 21:22

@Dija89 no they weren’t. When I fell pregnant with this child and the one I lost before this I hadn’t had a period for at least 4 months. They’re so infrequent I don’t remember when I have them.

Dija89 · 12/06/2020 21:28

Ok, really happy for you. I hope this pregnancy goes well for you 😁😁 btw do you think stress can affect your periods ?

ButtonandPickle19 · 12/06/2020 21:28

My periods are about once or twice per year at times... maximum of five per year.
I have two children that I had naturally. Just lots of sex and lots of luck. Lose weight, eat healthy and potentially see your gp if nothing happens after 6-12 months

ButtonandPickle19 · 12/06/2020 21:29

Oh and diagnosed with pcos as a late teen

PCOS here too. Diagnosed at 25 after many years of “everyone’s different, not all women have periods exactly 28 days apart” and other such nonsense. Now 46. No children. Had all sorts of treatments but nothing, absolutely nothing, worked. Not even IVF. I know it’s not what you want to hear but for every happy ending there are sad ones too. Fingers crossed for you that you have the “celeb” version of PCOS where you can have 4 or more children naturally.

Dija89 · 12/06/2020 21:33

@ButtonandPickle19 lol the lots of sex wont be a problem sure my partner will be happy with that haha. Really happy that you conceived 2 beautiful children.

I was diagnosed with PCOS in my early 30s but knew I wanted children so I came off the pill (took a couple of months for periods to arrive monthly) and lost 1 stone in weight. Fell pregnant with DC1 after 6 months. Came off the pill again and lost a stone again when ttcing for DC2 and fell pregnant after 5 months. I do believe that losing weight helped with falling pregnant within 6 months.

nokidshere · 12/06/2020 23:47

I do believe that losing weight helped with falling pregnant within 6 months.

I was a size 10 when I started ttc when I was 23. I was a size 16 when I finally fell pregnant at age 39.

I'm not disagreeing that it's a good idea to be as fit and healthy as possible, but in the 15yrs I spent going back and forth to the fertility clinic many women got pregnant before me. Women of all shapes and sizes fall pregnant both with and without fertility problems.

It's just not as simple as losing weight.

nokidshere · 12/06/2020 23:49

Sorry meant to say I was diagnosed with pcos when I was 22. My periods had always been irregular, sometimes many months apart.

Carabu1 · 13/06/2020 14:55

Just to throw another perspective on the weight thing - I was diagnosed with PCOS as a teenager, and have always been on the low end of normal bmi (19-19.5ish). I have about 1 natural period a year, tops, and stopped having them altogether on the pill. I ended up having tests and then clomid and am now pregnant with my first (fingers crossed!). So while I'm sure losing weight MAY help, it isn't this magic cure some will suggest it is - I would push for proper investigations and other intervention too, as even losing weight may not have the desired effect.

DoloresOnTheDottedLine · 13/06/2020 15:12

I was diagnosed with PCOS in my early twenties and told not to wait too long to try to conceive. My periods were extremely irregular. I tried to conceive naturally for a year when I was 31 with no luck. One visit to the GP and after some further tests, I was prescribed clomid, which is designed to promote ovulation. I became pregnant on the first cycle and my daughter was born when I was 33. I’m now TTC again and have been prescribed clomid for the second time. Best of luck to you OP - give it six months and if no joy, go and have a chat with your GP.

jennymac31 · 13/06/2020 15:53

When I said "I do believe that losing weight helped with falling pregnant within 6 months" clearly I should have stated that this was from my personal experience. I wasn't suggesting that losing weight was a magic cure or the only way to fall pregnant. My bad!
