Aibu to say I think that is a ridiculous decision by the BBC.Theyve removed it from its streaming service because of its “racist slurs”. It was a classic piece of comedy. I mean if they start picking apart old classic comedy how far are they going to go. Dads Army next?

The position of Jews and Chinese people in apartheid South Africa was interesting. Jews were classified as white, and as a community (large community there) were on the whole very successful and integrated within that system. That is not to say there was no antisemitism, there was, most mostly in the form of the old racist tropes and jokes. Chinese were classified as "honorary whites", which meant that they could use white buses and beaches etc and Chinese children could go to white schools. They also were on the whole a successful community, although racism against Chinese people was way more prominent that against Jews.

TheEmpressMatilda · 12/06/2020 12:02

EVERYTHING is potentially offensive to someone, somewhere.

We are literally talking about calling black people “N**R” Karran.

IrmaFayLear · 12/06/2020 12:03

I was suggesting banning all comedy because, like pp, something will always offend somebody. As I said, I find some (Male) idiot joking about periods in poor taste. Not witty, Just trying to be shocking in the guise of “lifting the lid”. This is “approved” by Radio 4. I’m sure most women would have thought he was a yucky idiot.

TheEmpressMatilda · 12/06/2020 12:05

Please don’t play the “some people are offended by EVERYTHING” card to defend calling black people “N**R.”

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 12/06/2020 12:06

@Saucery

Is not rat, is Siberian Hamster.
....Is Rat! You have rats in Spain, or did Franco have them all shot?
derxa · 12/06/2020 12:06

Sadly, I can no longer tell whether this is parody or whether PP really does want to ban comedy unless it passes an acceptability test. The PP is saying most R4 'comedy' is shit. However it's OK for Jo Brand to say she would be happy to throw battery acid over Nigel Farage.

BolloxtoGender · 12/06/2020 12:09

@TheEmpressMatilda i agree N word should not be used.

Don't twist my words please.

You don't know whether I'm black.

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 12/06/2020 12:12

N word should not be used.

Never? Ever?

How about NWA's "F- The Police," or Dylan's "Hurricane" ?

LastTrainEast · 12/06/2020 12:15

The hard part will be getting hold of the copies in people's homes.

Maybe some kind of amnesty deal where if you hand in your copy of Fawlty towers now you won't get in trouble later when your neighbour reports you watching it.

Could have the same deal for copies of the old testament too.

ravenmum · 12/06/2020 12:16

And I say GOOD to finding it uncomfortable if watching with a black person (I'd argue actually that one could/should find it uncomfortable whatever skin colour the viewers happen to have).
I agree that I should be uncomfortable anyway, but I think that, realistically, I would feel more embarrassed if there was someone there asking "what does that word mean, nanny?"

How else could the BBC make it clear that they don't think that someone making racist comments is just a harmless fool, that you can depict to amuse people? That even apparently "harmless" racism can cause harm? That they, too, think that people who do watch should feel uncomfortable?

Nonotthatdr · 12/06/2020 12:16

Mumsnet why was my post saying I am uncomfortable with defining racism along the lines of who hitler thought was good Enough to be in his master race or not problematic deleted? I was saying I didn’t agree with him.

If anyone comes for my copy of The Secret Garden they are going to have a heck of a fight on their hands.
Dickorydockwhatthe · 12/06/2020 12:22

I hate the N word and would never be use the word ever. However my son listens to alot of rap music and that word is often used with alot of other colourful language which I find offensive to be honest!! He even posts some of the lyrics on his Instagram like most teens but it makes me uncomfortable posting the lyrics from a rap song.

BolloxtoGender · 12/06/2020 12:23

@TheEmpressMatilda btw I find your calling me 'Karran' offensively ageist, racism and sexist and problematic, when you know nothing about me. But will let it go.

Xenia · 12/06/2020 12:23

Those of us who are avid readers even just of the bible and shakespeare might find if we are not careful people will be coming to our homes to remove works of literature because they were sexist or racist or were unkind to animals or showed animals being eaten or hunted and then the books may be burnt. Then people will come into churches to remove all bibles as they talk about gays going to hell along with adulterers and those who have sex before they are married and that kind of thing. Where does it end? It ends in a brave new world...........

Saucery · 12/06/2020 12:25

Yes, it would be good if people could park the ‘Karen’ shit. Although if a character in a sitcom used it and it illustrated that they were a bit of a twat then I’d let it stand.

Saucery · 12/06/2020 12:26

Willard Price is definitely for the pyre. Even with the disclaimer at the front of the books about it being a different time.

Are you sure? A quick Google suggests that the Bible does not say gay people will go to hell... www.smh.com.au/national/did-israel-folau-actually-misquote-the-bible-hell-yes-20190717-p5281z.html
(Honest question; please let me know if you meant another part of the Bible.)

IrmaFayLear · 12/06/2020 12:35

Snort at Fawlty Towers videotape amnesty! Can you imagine if anyone is caught on tv with a boxed set behind their head?

IntermittentParps · 12/06/2020 12:43

For starters they (we) could credit viewers with a little bit of ability to apply critical thinking and awareness of cultural context.

But more simply, they could start with a disclaimer along the lines that pps have talked about: that 'this episode may offend/reflects a time of different standards of awareness/etc'.

notangelinajolie · 12/06/2020 12:50

@ItsGoingTibiaK
s this a spoof post?

No not spoof, my parents really did own a hotel and
I've been posting on mumsnet for years.

Apart from that I don't think I've said anything any other poster hasn't said to make you think it's not real.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 12/06/2020 12:52

The episode has been removed due to the use of the N word and the W word. Good fucking riddance. But watch all the boomers go mad.

theDudesmummy · 12/06/2020 12:53

Don't paint all boomers!

SerenDippitty · 12/06/2020 12:55

Upstairs Downstairs will never be able to be streamed again, even though it was reflecting the attics of the era in which it was set.

Saucery · 12/06/2020 12:55

I’m a little worried about Withnail And I now......... Sad

Thank goodness I have slight Hoarder tendencies and have all this stuff on DVD.
