Aibu to say I think that is a ridiculous decision by the BBC.Theyve removed it from its streaming service because of its “racist slurs”. It was a classic piece of comedy. I mean if they start picking apart old classic comedy how far are they going to go. Dads Army next?

It's the racist language by the old colonel not the nazi references.

There are endless programmes about WW2 so it's not that.

This is exactly what happened in China during the cultural revolution. I find it terrifying that things are going that way here.

More recently -

2018 - 'Tasteless, Vulgar and Obscene.' China Just Banned Hip-Hop Culture and Tattoos From Television."

But this does make light of racism, turning it into a silly flaw. I can easily imagine sitting there with a black grandchild and finding it very unpleasant as family viewing.

I would imagine and hope that most reasonable people wouldn't take from this episode that racism is just 'a silly flaw' but would recognise the seriousness of the point being made, albeit using comedy as a vehicle.

And I say GOOD to finding it uncomfortable if watching with a black person (I'd argue actually that one could/should find it uncomfortable whatever skin colour the viewers happen to have). Discomfort could and should open up a conversation that needs to be had.

Nonotthatdr · 12/06/2020 11:40

Jews were slaughtered because Nazis did not consider them aryan. They also did not consider Eastern European’s Aryan And killed loads of them and were a bit iffy about Southen Europeans also. They went through these populations removing the children that looked aryan to bring up in aryan households and taking the women who looked aryan for a breeding program. Most of these people would consider themselves white.

I think what people who say “white people cannot experience racism” are saying is “people who hitler considered part of his master race cannot experience racism” which is a very narrow definition of “white people” that excludes many who would define themselves as white

Bluemoooon · 12/06/2020 11:42

Thank God it's only white Brits who are racist.
Imagine what books and movies would be left if it was everybody!

donquixotedelamancha · 12/06/2020 11:42

Perhaps we should ban all comedy, because 99% is imo completely unfunny. Has anyone had the misfortune to hear any Radio 4 “comedy”? I heard a piece where they were joking (a man) about periods. It was I suppose meant to be modern and brave. I was offended: it was salacious and grim.

Sadly, I can no longer tell whether this is parody or whether PP really does want to ban comedy unless it passes an acceptability test.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 12/06/2020 11:42

And just when we were comfortably into the 21st century - welcome to 1984!

BadLad · 12/06/2020 11:42

The episode with the rat is better. ducks

The best episode is Communication Problems, with deaf Mrs. Richards.

dottiedodah · 12/06/2020 11:43

The point here ,is that even if certain words get edited out of the show. The BBC is still showing something that could be seen as offensive especially as everyone knows what the word is . I am white and would not like to be laughing at a show which may offend other people .There are lots of gentle comedies which dont cause offence : The Good Life ,Butterflies ,Ever Decreasing Circles and so on .We are always told the Python team are genius ,but I was offended by "life Of Brian" as a Christian .Maybe we could look at making some new comedies ,"Cuckoo" is very good and sharp ,also Friday Night Dinner to name a few

BLM, Extinction Rebellion, Momentum...all of these groups are de facto marxists

Certainly an eye-opener here - I wasn't aware of this agenda until yesterday;

"We’re guided by a commitment to dismantle" ... "capitalism" ...

@Xenia

It was the same in the 1970s or 80s when some local authorities nurseries banned traditional nursery rhyme Baa baa black sheep.

Which local authorities banned Baa Baa Black Sheep?

HouchinBawbags · 12/06/2020 11:45

I wouldn't be outraged and fight to keep this. People need to check out what shite they're being fed before bleating about it, sharing it on social media and Internet forums in sheer indignation. "How dare they attack a British institution such as the hilarious Faulty Towers comedy!"

Yeah. Right up until you see THAT scene.

IntermittentParps · 12/06/2020 11:48

Life Of Brian takes the piss out of unquestioning and mindless followers, not out of Christians or Christianity or any religion per se.

Misunderstanding the point and target of the comedy is the issue with the Fawlty Towers ep too.

thegcatsmother · 12/06/2020 11:49

Jews were slaughtered because Nazis did not consider them white. Words fail me...if, as a PP said you meant by that the Aryan ideal, then can I point out that Adolf wasn't exactly blond and blue eyed either?

FOJN · 12/06/2020 11:50

I am white and would not like to be laughing at a show which may offend other people .

We're going to have to ban comedy altogether then.

The comedies you deem "gentle" showed very outdated, sexist roles for women. Am I allowed to be offended or are you the sole arbiter of what is both funny and inoffensive?

theDudesmummy · 12/06/2020 11:51

Steph, never too soon...

TheEmpressMatilda · 12/06/2020 11:54

thegcatsmother I am the descendent of Holocaust survivors and a scholar of Jewish history and culture.

Jews are NOT white. At best we have conditional whiteness. The question of whether Jews are white or not has been long debated. But no white supremacist considers Jews to be white, and plenty of Ashkenazim do not consider themselves white.

Antisemitism is racism, period.

Please do not exploit the shoah as a way to defend anti-black racism. It’s despicable.

notangelinajolie · 12/06/2020 11:55

They should leave Faulty Towers alone. I have the box set which I appear to have inherited in my late fathers DVD collection. He found it funny because we owned a hotel in the 70's and yes, it was just as crazy and some of the goings on weren't far removed from FT plots. He was nothing like BF by the way Grin
Everyone I know has stayed at a hotel like like that at some time in their life.
The censors need a sense of humour transplant - Faulty Towers was and still is comedy gold.

It's political correctness gone mad. And Dad's Army? If they remove that then we really won't be able to mention the War will we.

And how far will this go? Will they stop showing England v Germany football matches? Are flag waving, chanting fans supporting their country racist?

Beeping out sensitive words and a warning 'this episode may offend and doesn't reflect the views of this channel', would be enough to stop people tuning in surely? When I read that a film/tv programme contains violence or something the viewer may find upsetting - I don't watch it. The day nobody tunes into this stuff is the day they should pull it.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 12/06/2020 11:56

I don't think ever seen a comedy act that isn't offensive in some way to be honest!!

BolloxtoGender · 12/06/2020 11:57

I find the logic of 'offensive' offensive, and highly 'problematic'.

EVERYTHING is potentially offensive to someone, somewhere. People can even say and claim that they are offended (even if they are not) as a way to silence and gaslight people. Some people use it that way, but claim that they are the Good Guys. If someone is offended, then they are automatically right? I find that offensive.

Is this a spoof post?
TheEmpressMatilda · 12/06/2020 12:01

I grew up watching and loving Fawlty Towers, having bern introduced to it by my white father. I still have a deep love of FT because of the shared memories and because it’s a reminder of my late dad.

Watching it now, for the first time in many years, and some of the words used make me (as a biracial woman) feel like someone physically hit me in the face.

I don’t want other black and biracial people to experience that. I don’t want the whole episodes censored, maybe just those lines of those words bleeped out. And yes I know I’ll be called uppity, oversensitive, part of a Marxist New World Order plot, racist against white people, attacking freedom of speech, the thousand other terms used to silence and bully black women. I don’t care how much abuse is hurled at me, the fact is celebrating racism inflicts real pain.

Why do you WANT to inflict pain on black and biracial people do very badly?
