Massive school catch up scheme

Muminlockdown2020 · 11/06/2020 10:26

So after watching Boris last night, he mentioned that there will be a massive school catch up scheme over the summer.

He didn't go into any details but are any teachers aware of this? What it would entail?
Does it mean they plan for schools to be open through the summer?

@lyralalala he hadn't made a promise for catch up previously.

The scheme linked to suggests undergraduates tutoring pupils. Is it just me that things that would cause more problems to education in that, clever as they may be, they are untrained teachers with little knowledge of the new exams structure and requirements?

Kazzyhoward · 11/06/2020 16:27

Full time for all is only possible for us when there is no risk

That'll be never then. There will never be "no risk". Even if there's a vaccine, some people won't have it. Even if the virus becomes weak, some people will always be susceptible to catching it and some will always be vulnerable.

If you want "no risk" you'd never leave the house, but even that isn't risk free as there are risks to living in your home too.

Schools will not run through summer for children of key workers, Downing Street confirms

Education secretary Gavin Williamson has told MPs that schools will close over the summer holiday months, with Boris Johnson's official spokespersonconfirmingthis would apply to key workers' children too.

"There would have been a reasonable expectation that parents would expect for schools not to be open over the course of the summer," he told reporters.

Schools stayed open during the Easter break to help parents keep working through the crisis.

unchienandalusia · 11/06/2020 16:35

@cabbageking I despair if you are a teacher. No risk? You do realise that is impossible (with everything, not just covid)!

Distance will be reduced to 1m. Pupils will either go in 50% of the time or they will have to alternate between classroom lessons and outside time.

Parent volunteers, retired teachers, recent graduates, local facilities eg libraries, museums, churches etc.

We need to be creative here, problem solve and get rid of the negativity. I am constantly amazed that teachers aren't the people shouting loudest for children to get an education.

gingercat02 · 11/06/2020 16:53

We've just had a message from school saying home schooling will continue until the end of July. They were meant to break up on 16th

LondonJax · 11/06/2020 17:02

Boris has done what he always does. Announces first, engages brain later.

Apparently many dentists only knew they were opening when Boris announced it. They're still struggling to get PPE!

Note to Boris. Saying it does not make it so.

kazzer2867 · 11/06/2020 17:02

@Kittio

All very confusing. I just read the same. A lot of contradictory information coming from the government.

Kittio · 11/06/2020 17:12

It is. And i just saw an article about appealing against teacher assessed GCSE grades when I'm sure they said there weren't going to be appeals this year as there's no exam taken www.tes.com/news/coronavirus-ofqual-considers-appeals-helpline-gcse-grades

Kazzyhoward · 11/06/2020 17:16

There are lots of private tutors/supply teachers who are very keen to get back to work

And exam invigilators, exam board markers, etc who have lost their wages for their temporary exam season work.

Appuskidu · 11/06/2020 17:25

@Pieceofpurplesky

He will chuck some money at schools and expect them to sort it. Teachers will get paid to deliver some sort of lesson. It won't be their teacher, it won't be proper lessons but it will please the masses.
I doubt this very much!

There will be no money and it will please nobody.

cabbageking · 11/06/2020 17:25

If you read my post you will see it referred to my school and what is doable for my school.

HipTightOnions · 11/06/2020 17:33

I thinks it’s because they realise that shouting doesn’t actually achieve anything. They are instead trying to continue educating children as well as they can in extremely constrained circumstances.

Pieceofpurplesky · 11/06/2020 19:28

@Appuskidu of course it will please some people - there are users on the threads about this talking about how delighted they are it may happen.

CallmeAngelina · 11/06/2020 19:35

He didn't go into any details but are any teachers aware of this?

Of course not. We found out about schools closing in March on the 6 o'clock news at the same time as everyone else.
Why on earth would we get any heads-up about anything else?

FrippEnos · 11/06/2020 19:52

We need to be creative here, problem solve and get rid of the negativity.

You be creative, and you provide the money, resources and all the other stuff.

Because stating crap whilst knowing nothing apparently solves everything.

CallmeAngelina · 11/06/2020 20:03

Yeah, what's with the "we?"
We teachers are busy enough as it is; in my case, back in school teaching at the same time as managing Home Learning for others.
I have enough on my plate.

Appuskidu · 11/06/2020 20:35

of course it will please some people - there are users on the threads about this talking about how delighted they are it may happen

They may be less delighted when the plan turns out to be shite.

FrippEnos · 11/06/2020 20:37

Appuskidu

And it will turn in to more teachers are rubbish threads.

Pieceofpurplesky · 12/06/2020 00:38

Exactly a shite, unplanned scheme that will be blamed on teachers as per

He promised they’d do whatever it took to get schools open and it failed because whatever it takes doesn’t involve money

PareidoliaNephophile · 12/06/2020 01:44

I'd welcome the work as long as it's paid but have two dc of my own so no childcare unless they have a scheme or their own school to go to. I won't be alone in that.

DateLoaf · 12/06/2020 01:49

Seriously confused by this. So if schools are shut over the summer am I meant to be doing ‘catch up work’ with DC at home, while I work from home?

ZombieFan · 12/06/2020 02:04

Absolutely horrific government, they should have put measures in place to deal with this pandemic a year ago. To say they are trying to help children now is ridiculous. They should make all childcare free and give all parents free laptops and broadband so they can home school properly for the next year. All teachers should be forced to provide live steaming of their lessons.
Why didn't they listen when unions told then going back to school was unsafe. I mean they were literally TOLD. And now they are still aren't listening when they are told that all children should be back in school. Its been 24 hours why aren't they listening already and doing what they are told. When MN tell them to do something then it is obviously better advice than any scientist or medic but they still refuse to do what they are told.
Screw the lot of them.
