I wouldn't miss any statues of people

Right from being a kid and first being aware of statues of famous people I never saw the point.

I wouldn't miss a single one, actually; even the ones to people I liked like Victoria Wood and Eric Morecambe - why don't we just chuck them all in the sea?

Although OP if you’re a fan of animal statues you should head this way to see our Kelpies.

@derxa

According to a Scottish chap on Radio 5 this morning it was only a matter of chance that prevented Rabbie Burns clearing off and making a killing as a slave trader, I googled it and found this Good for you. He didn't go. making a killing as a slave trader Even this poisonous article didn't mention slave trading.
Holy crap - I never said he did go - can you read?

This "poisonous article" was actually kinder than some that came up -

"Notorious for fornication and exploiting women, Burns had a fantasy to emigrate to Jamaica and become a slave driver before making his fortune and returning to Scotland, says Dr Gerard Carruthers, a lecturer in Scottish literature at the University of Glasgow in a new paper to be published later this month."

Hope they leave Greyfriar's Bobby alone.

Proudboomer · 10/06/2020 12:49

Let’s see if the BBC are going to remove Eric Gills sculpture from outside broadcasting house as I would say a sculpture a admitted peodofile And abuser is worse

The Duke of Sutherland is one who should be in danger.

Hoohaahoo · 10/06/2020 12:50

I like statues but I wouldn’t miss them if thry were taken down.
We could always build new statues that don’t have a horrible history behind them.

Thanks - seen and enjoyed the Kelpies many times - they are stunning IMHO - but then I also like the Falkirk Wheel for it's quirky engineering beauty.

I agree with you. I've enjoyed temporary statues though. For example there were colourful elephant sculptures scattered around London for people to find a few years ago.

derxa · 10/06/2020 12:58

However there is intellectual snobbery against Burns in Scotland. Academics don't want to be associated with a 'kailyard' mentality. Unfortunately for them they can't stop a lot of Scots loving Burns

Meruem · 10/06/2020 12:58

It's not the statues as such, but what comes next? TV shows are being targeted, ok I think Little Britain is shit and I certainly won't miss it. But is it books next? Then what? Targeting things from the past doesn't bring equality to the present.

malificent7 · 10/06/2020 12:58

I like the John Lennon one in Liverpool...blends into Mathew Street perfectly.

Pumperthepumper · 10/06/2020 12:59

Yes, the wheel is my most favourite.

sahbear · 10/06/2020 13:00

I must have walked past Colston's many, many times, and never looked at it. I won't miss it, or any other Victorian statue I can think of.

Rainbowchampagne · 10/06/2020 13:02

YABU to pollute our waters

GerundTheBehemoth · 10/06/2020 13:03

I love the statue of the lioness chasing the lesser kudu in Lower Grosvenor Gardens, London. But yeah, not so bothered about human ones.

Fair point - although I was speaking figuratively, not literally.

Worse than what?

The statue of Edward Colston who enslaved and killed thousand of black people?

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 10/06/2020 13:04

Broadcasting House has a sculpture by Eric Gill not of Eric Gill though. Not today’s issue.

I’d miss Nelson, and Boudicca and Wellington (at the Royal Exchange) and Greathead the underground engineer next to him is a personal fave. The Albert Memorial would look strange without Albert. And people fought for so long to get Seacole’s statue that it would be a shame if it went away.

Coffeeandbeans · 10/06/2020 13:06

The memorials to the wars in Hyde Park are beautiful. Also I like the ones of Pankhurst around the country regarding the suffragette movement.

MrMagoo100 · 10/06/2020 13:06

Statues belong in a museum.

Laziest form of city decoration ever.

Vivi0 · 10/06/2020 13:06

@pinktaxi

The point is, where does it stop?

I hardly think the removal of statues of individuals who have committed atrocities or are shrouded in controversy is the beginning of anything really. I think people have been blind about who we are actively choosing to continue to commemorate for too long. Some of these statues should have been removed a long time ago. I couldn’t even get worked up about the removal all commemorative statues.

As a Glaswegian, I support the renaming of streets here. There are many streets named after prominent slave traders. It is unacceptable for them to remain. Slavery is a crime against humanity.

What is going on is hardly a book burning.

ViciousJackdaw · 10/06/2020 13:21

I would miss the statue of Queen Victoria in Liverpool. If you look at her from a certain angle, you see this:

I wouldn't miss any statues of people

I agree with you.

Picklypickles · 10/06/2020 14:03

Yes, I'd rather see trees than statues, far more useful. No reason these statues can't be put into museums so people can choose if they want to see them or not.
