WIBU in Lidl queue

So, this happened yesterday and I'm over it as they say, but at the same time it has just crossed my mind again today as the whole shebang caused me much annoyance at the time as I dislike conflict.

For the purposes of a fair hearing, I'm not going to say which party I belong to just yet.

Basically it all went down in a queue for Lidl.

So Man called Bob joins the end of the queue.

Woman called Mary joins the end of the queue behind Bob.

1 minute later Sue and Karen join Bob at his place in the queue in front of Mary.

Mary states that there's a queue and that they should go behind her.

Sue and Karen state that they are with Bob and they're family and that they're not jumping the queue.

Mary won't let it go and states that regardless of who they are they should join the end of the queue behind her.

Heated argument ensued with both sides exchanging 'pleasantries'.

Was Mary wrong or were Sue and Karen? Bob kept out of it.

For clarity, this was the queue to get into Lidl, not the queue for the tills

In that case, on the whole I'm with Bob - or somewhere in the middle, because unless your Lidl is unusual, queues to get in usually move pretty quickly and the time it takes for three people to get through the door rather than one is insignificant in reality.

These days I take a totally Zen approach to shopping. I know it's going to take a long time, so I make sure I do it at a time when I don't have to hurry back. I know I'm going to have to queue, so I take a book to read while I wait. So long as that queue is moving, I really am not going to get worked up if I have to spend an extra minute or two outside reading my book.

ineedaholidaynow · 09/06/2020 23:47

@BashStreetKid have you had to queue in the rain yet?

NoMoreDickheads · 09/06/2020 23:50

Family ppl are all in together. Everyone should know that. The woman who had a problem with it must be a bit weird.

BashStreetKid · 09/06/2020 23:52

I kept bumping into Bob Sue and Karen all the way around Lidl too.
I knew I was right.

But that would have happened if they were in front of you or behind you, wouldn't it? Your place in the queue realistically makes little difference to the time you spend going around the shop, because it depends on stuff like what you need to get, how easy it is to find it, how decisive and/or efficient you are, how quickly you walk, etc etc.

The reality is that the only delay to you was the fairly minuscule delay caused by two extra bodies going through the doors. It really wasn't worth getting so worked up about,.

Yes. Took my brolly. No problem.

BashStreetKid · 09/06/2020 23:58

My order went through and I said, loudly, to the cashier, "Sorry I don't seem to have my card, could I write a cheque and show you my police ID you will have my details if there is a problem." She said yes and I saw the one who had already gone through look at the 2nd one and shake her head.

Nice story, total fiction, unless it was at least 40 years ago. Supermarkets don't take cheques, and in the days when they did cashiers had very firm instructions that they could "only" accept bank cards to support them, for the very important reason that that was the only guarantee that the cheque could be honoured. If a customer doesn't have enough money in their account to meet a cheque, no amount of shouting "But she showed me her police ID" is going to make the bank honour that cheque.

I’m with Mary, and would have stood up for her had I been behind her in the queue.

PickAChew · 10/06/2020 00:08

Why do you care if they're behind you?

Jen4813 · 10/06/2020 01:32

Mary you are correct, but what do you expect when you shop in Lidl Grin

SunshineCake · 10/06/2020 06:55

Pre covid joining a friend would be fine. Now, with the rules being one person one trolley then they should have gone behind as they also shouldn't be walking around in a group anyway.

Casschops · 10/06/2020 07:18

They totally jumped the queue. They are only allowed so many people allowed in store so that set you back.

Milssofadoesntreallyfit · 10/06/2020 07:26

Bob was right. There will always be piss takers, the only person they would have listened to wa a lidl member of staff or security who should have put their foot down upon entry.
You can't go round policing people because
A. You don't actually have any authority to do so., that was the job for lidl.
B. If you do need to challenge someone you need to be able to do it without it turning into a bun fight otherwise it defeats the whole purpose of the challenge. Your point gets lost in the bin fight and you all just look like twats.

You and them ended up looking like twats, Bob remains impartial and dignified. Lidl whilst yes they should have put their foot down may be didn't for the sake of keeping the peace for the benefit of the majority who were being decent.
If 95%are doing the right things and the 5 that aren't are quietly pushing their luck.
You, whilst you're intentions were right created a worse situation by starting it.

Silvercatowner · 10/06/2020 07:31

This never happens at Waitrose.

MrMeSeeks · 10/06/2020 07:33

I’ve waited over 20 mins to get into mine, you may be lucky not wait but not everyone is the same!’
Op yanbu, they were cf’s!!!!

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 10/06/2020 07:39

She said, "We are together." I said, "You weren't at the deli counter."

Lol. That would be me! I'm not one to let something go.🧐

BashStreetKid · 10/06/2020 07:42

I’ve waited over 20 mins to get into mine, you may be lucky not wait but not everyone is the same!’

That's roughly the usual wait for my local supermarket, so there's nothing "lucky" about my experience. The point is that, if you have to wait, is 20.5 minutes really so much more dreadful than 20 minutes that it's worth getting into an argument about it? The reality is that, once you're in the shop, it makes no difference to the time it takes you to do the shopping and leave.

Euclid · 10/06/2020 07:46

I agree that it doesn't happen at Waitrose or indeed M&S! They have good security guards in my local ones of both who police the queue well and don't allow more than two adults to come in together.

HugeAckmansWife · 10/06/2020 07:47

In my local Lidl an extra two people can add 10 .mins to your queuing time as they do one out one in and they seem to only ever have one till on now so people come out slowly. As I've left tweens home alone (recent development) I'd prefer not to be unnecessarily delayed. There's really no need for more than one adult to go in together but if they need to the shouldnt place hold the queue but act separately.

Euclid · 10/06/2020 07:48

I was sorry to hear that Karen has replaced Rita.

Oliversmumsarmy · 10/06/2020 07:49

Firstly you are only allowed one person in Lidl so unless they were standing 2m apart from Bob, in my Lidl they wouldn’t get in regardless of them having their own baskets.

Secondly how did they get a basket out in the queue as you can’t get baskets till you get in the store and then can’t remove them from the store when you are finished

Mary was right and for all of them to get into the store they should have each queued 2 metres apart behind Mary.

DomDoesWotHeWants · 10/06/2020 07:53

Mary was right.

Crunchymum · 10/06/2020 07:54

You queue with your baskets?

Flynn999 · 10/06/2020 07:56

Isn’t it meant to be one person per household. Back of the queue for Karen and sue.

Tardigrade001 · 10/06/2020 08:12

Mary needs to chill out. Causing a scene over something like this makes shopping an unpleasant experience for everyone.

fascinated · 10/06/2020 08:12

How could they maintain 2m distancing with all that queue jumping and baskets and whatnot? Did everyone in the queue have to shuffle back an extra 4m then?
