The BBC need to stop attacking shieldies!

Yet again today the BBC news reports that -

"Vulnerable people advised to shield will also be allowed outdoors."

How dare they.

Words matter and this needs to stop.

I do find the use of that word odd given that people have only been advised to stay in if vulnerable.

Get a grip. It’s easily understood terminology updating the guidelines. Nobody is saying that anyone shielding who went outside before now should be hung drawn and quartered.

I don't think anyone believes shielded people are kept inside against their will? Surely the advice to stay inside is for their own benefit and, ultimately, is their own choice? "Allowed" is perhaps not the most appropriate word, but I'd be really surprised if anyone actually thought the shielded group currently wasn't "allowed" out. I also don't think it's a vendetta by the BBC... Do you think you are perhaps taking this a little personally?

I don’t think the BBC are attacking those of us shielding ( never shieldies) but I think their language, like many journalists and even more of the general public, has become directive and hyperbolic.
I find the very word ‘allowed’ a trigger, but then I always have; I hear it a lot from people who have little imagination and like having rules which they can use to browbeat others.
Either way, ignore it. Or you’ll end up stressing for no reason - like me.

Were shielding due to the 5 yo, I don't feel attacked by the use of the word "allowed"

I'm shielding and I'm pretty sure I've heard that non vulnerable people are now 'allowed' to travel, allowed to mix in groups and so on.

I don't particularly like the idea that I'm 'being shielded' though.

It sounds a bit passive, something being done to me rather than something I'm doing myself.

I am a lot more bothered about the whole shitshow though, rather than the language.

Whatever the wording, you definitely need to get out more. Heck of an overthink to call this an attack and why the BBC in particular? Are other news outlets all beyond reproach when it comes to 'shieldies'?

They aren't attacking 'shieldies' as YOU call them.
They are reporting what the guidelines are for people shielding and how they have changed.

There is a general attitude of telling people what to do now and general freedoms have been erased.
