The BBC need to stop attacking shieldies!

Yet again today the BBC news reports that -

"Vulnerable people advised to shield will also be allowed outdoors."

How dare they.

Words matter and this needs to stop.

OP posts:
SnuggyBuggy · 09/06/2020 07:07

I do find the use of that word odd given that people have only been advised to stay in if vulnerable.

clockworklime · 09/06/2020 12:30

"Shieldies"?

Wankerchief · 09/06/2020 12:31

Eh?

Starbuggy · 09/06/2020 12:34

YABU for using an overly cutesy term while claiming that words matter

Get a grip. It’s easily understood terminology updating the guidelines. Nobody is saying that anyone shielding who went outside before now should be hung drawn and quartered.

LockdownMayhem · 09/06/2020 12:35

I don't think anyone believes shielded people are kept inside against their will? Surely the advice to stay inside is for their own benefit and, ultimately, is their own choice? "Allowed" is perhaps not the most appropriate word, but I'd be really surprised if anyone actually thought the shielded group currently wasn't "allowed" out. I also don't think it's a vendetta by the BBC... Do you think you are perhaps taking this a little personally?

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 09/06/2020 12:39

It’s poor reporting on an admittedly messy situation but I’m struggling to see how you think it’s an “attack”

12elve · 09/06/2020 12:42

First time I've seen the word "shieldies". How patronising!

heartsonacake · 09/06/2020 12:43

YABU and patronising, and creating an issue where there isn’t one.

MouthBreathingRage · 09/06/2020 12:45

Oh dear, perhaps ask MNHQ to edit your title. It's obviously going to distract from the debate, especially when you're quite right that 'words matter'.

Crunchymum · 09/06/2020 12:45

I assume it was a typo @ShieldingNotJailed

Haenow · 09/06/2020 12:47

YABU, don’t take it so personally.,

TinyTear · 09/06/2020 12:49

Probably the same person who would say Aspies

Dreamersandwishers · 09/06/2020 12:50

I don’t think the BBC are attacking those of us shielding ( never shieldies) but I think their language, like many journalists and even more of the general public, has become directive and hyperbolic.
I find the very word ‘allowed’ a trigger, but then I always have; I hear it a lot from people who have little imagination and like having rules which they can use to browbeat others.
Either way, ignore it. Or you’ll end up stressing for no reason - like me.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/06/2020 12:52

Op id claim it was a typo and you meant shielders.

Were shielding due to the 5 yo, I don't feel attacked by the use of the word "allowed"
"Vulnerable people advised to shield will also be advised to go outdoors." suggests they should rather than its OK to do so, which might make them feel they should.

Is this really your biggest issue of you're shielding?

VaTeLaverLesMains · 09/06/2020 12:53

I'm shielding and I'm pretty sure I've heard that non vulnerable people are now 'allowed' to travel, allowed to mix in groups and so on.

I don't particularly like the idea that I'm 'being shielded' though.

It sounds a bit passive, something being done to me rather than something I'm doing myself.

I am a lot more bothered about the whole shitshow though, rather than the language.

TitianaTitsling · 09/06/2020 12:54

How on earth is it an attack?! And agree with pp shieldies 🤮

TrickorTreacle · 09/06/2020 12:56

I think the OP just called shielders "shieldies" in the same sense that guild members are "guildies".

OP = YANBU.
Most of the other posters = just looking to be offended.

I say that as a shieldie myself Grin

TitianaTitsling · 09/06/2020 12:57

That was not meant to be a 🤮 a 😬!

NameChange84 · 09/06/2020 12:57

Please don’t call us “shieldies” we’re not infants and don’t need patronised.

LockdownMayhem · 09/06/2020 12:59

OP = YANBU
Most of the other posters = just looking to be offended

Really?! I think it seems like it's the op who is looking to be offended and the rest of the posters who are pointing this out...

recycledteenager24 · 09/06/2020 13:11

not a good title op

Pinkdelight3 · 09/06/2020 13:11

Whatever the wording, you definitely need to get out more. Heck of an overthink to call this an attack and why the BBC in particular? Are other news outlets all beyond reproach when it comes to 'shieldies'?

LongTallSammie · 09/06/2020 13:33

They aren't attacking 'shieldies' as YOU call them.
They are reporting what the guidelines are for people shielding and how they have changed.

There is a general attitude of telling people what to do now and general freedoms have been erased.

LongTallSammie · 09/06/2020 13:36

SHIELDIES LIVES MATTER

don't we all know that?

The children have been thrown under the bus for 'shieldies' (as you call them) and now you complain about 'language'. The whole country has been worried for 'shieldies' and now you are moaning about the BBC saying words matter....

Good grief what a delicate little flower you are.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 09/06/2020 13:39

I don't understand why it is an attack Confused
