Can being very over weight stop periods /make irregular?

I have a bmi of 40 (working on losing weight) and I usually have a cycle between 32 and 36 days. I've now missed 2 periods, it's been 90 days since the beginning of my last period. I do sometimes have irregular periods but never this delayed. Could this be due to being overweight? I will ring the Dr's if I've not had anything in a few weeks. I'm not pregnant

According to my doctor, yes. It can also be part of pcos (which can cause both weight problems and irregular periods)

AGrownManMadeWager · 07/06/2020 16:32

Yes. What age are you? Could also be peri-menopause

SarahTancredi · 07/06/2020 16:32

Being malnourished can affect periods. And you dont have to be underweight to be malnourished and any sudden weight loss even if you were overweight to begin with can affect it too.

But so can stress

Himbeerrot · 07/06/2020 16:43

Thanks. I am 32. I eat way too much, undiagnosed binge eating disorder.

I haven't had a sudden loss, just starting really I've only just lost my first 3lb

I have a BMI over 30 (lower than 35) and have noticed that mine are irregular when I'm heavier (I'm 32 so I'm hoping it's not perimenopause).

It's probably best to talk to your GP over the phone because they might still want to organize a blood test and/or PCOS scan though.

Himbeerrot · 07/06/2020 16:45

Thank you. Another reason /motivation to lose the weight then

How old are you? I am overweight and have irregular periods but I am also in my 40s and have a contraceptive implant. The weight isn’t necessarily the cause (obviously it doesn’t help).

Himbeerrot · 07/06/2020 16:58

I'm 32

Fat cells produce oestrogen, and this hormone imbalance affects your periods and can make them irregular/stop

Himbeerrot · 07/06/2020 17:16

Oh wow thank you.
Ive been a bit irregular like a week or two out before, but 90 days since my last one is just unheard of for me

Definitely, my periods vanish over a certain weight. As soon as I dip back down they come back.

RumpoleoftheBaileys · 07/06/2020 17:49

Yes. Also can be tied in with PCOS.

vanillandhoney · 07/06/2020 17:54

Yes, it can do.

A sudden change in weight/diet/exercise regime can cause problems too. I had spotting a few years ago when I changed my diet and increased my exercise and after a load of tests came back normal, my GP said that that was probably the cause.

It can mess with your hormones big time.

RJnomore1 · 07/06/2020 17:55

are you absolutely certain you couldn’t be pregnant?

Himbeerrot · 07/06/2020 18:04

We don't really have a sex life to speak of, I can't remember exactly whenthe last time we did but dh has had a vasectomy anyway

I think bmi can have a serious impact on periods. Admittedly I was the other way.
Bmi was 34/35 with awfully heavy periods (tmi: very large clots and leaking through super tampax and pads). Since losing weight ( current bmi 30/31) and my periods are getting lighter (still heavy, but definitely getting better).

Good luck with the weight loss btw.

Himbeerrot · 07/06/2020 18:09

Thank you. I've just downloaded a cbt for binge eating disorder that I'm going to work through so hopefully that will help

Vasectomys can occasionally reverse, I’d do a test just to make absolute sure then contact the gp about bloods.

PCOS could be at play, and fat cells do affect your hormones. There’s a good pt on Facebook called James smith who posts lots about women and fat/weight that might be interesting to look at. (You can see all his posts free btw)

Himbeerrot · 07/06/2020 18:13

Thanks I'll have a look at that page. I don't think I need to do a test, I can't remember the last time we had sex but it was over 6 months ago I'm sure

That makes it less likely then 😉 good luck with it all, I did once go for over 9 weeks without a period for no apparent reason, then it reappeared and regular as ever since then, sometimes our bodies are just odd 🤷🏻‍♀️

princesspenny · 07/06/2020 18:16

Yes it can, I was obese from early teens to mid 30s, bmi ranging from 35 to 48 at my heaviest and my periods were really irregular (like maybe 5 a year?) and I had none at all for about 2 years. I went on metformin for diabetes and they came back very regular though I was still really heavy.

Now my bmi is in the overweight range and I'm off metformin and still very regular

Himbeerrot · 07/06/2020 18:17

Thank you all :)
