Attending BLM protests?

ALifeDesign · 06/06/2020 14:28

I am wondering if anyone has attended today or planning to go to any of the protests being organised around the country this weekend.

I am debating going tomorrow. I would maintain social distancing and wear a mask. In ordinary times I would be there without a second's thought but these aren't ordinary times.

Some photos from today on Twitter look well organised, distanced etc.

I wfh and live with one other person - currently furloughed - who would also be at the protest, so I feel we are low risk of spreading.

I'm still a bit torn. So I suppose AIBU to attend?

Its come out that George Floyd was an armed robber who put a gun to a pregnant woman's belly. I wonder how many would have marched if they knew that.

Why is this relevant?
burritofan · 07/06/2020 08:35

@TabbyMumz Whenever a Black person is murdered by the police, the white supremacy finds a way to excuse it or justify it by digging for dirt, and you're contributing to that. Bringing up George Floyd's past is entirely irrelevant to the fact he was a victim of a modern-day lynching; the cop who knelt on his neck for eight minutes was doing so to an unarmed man because of his race, not because of his past offences.

Paperchainpopp · 07/06/2020 08:36

@TabbyMumz even if that the case what George did was very wrong.

So were the officers who abused their poison and acted unprofessionally in broad day light. Who the hell gives them the right to go and see on somebody’s neck. Did George really deserve that at what point didn’t the officer look at the man on the floor and think I need to STOP NOW.
The way people are casually justifying the polices actions along side the police is SHOCKING.
The police have been arrested for a reason and I cannot wait to hear their explanation of why they felt they could abuse their power (because of George’s previous convictions) Blush

Pathetic!!

Who throws a bike at a horse? I can't get over that one

caperberries · 07/06/2020 08:45

@derxa agreed, absolutely barbaric

Coffeecak3 · 07/06/2020 08:57

www.brantomepolicehorses.com

This charity does amazing work.

I wont go to a protest in the same way as I wont go to any mass gathering now. I dont think it helps black people to put more of them at risk from the virus.

Disgusted that anyone should mention the past of the man murdered as if that was any excuse for murder. A lot of American police are thugs, many Americans are blatantly racist. I dont forget the white protester who was knocked over by the police either - more acting like thugs.

LakieLady · 07/06/2020 09:04

The BBC said the police office threw herself off the horse. Hmmm......

They've just said she hit her head on a traffic light!

rwalker · 07/06/2020 09:08

Have u seen the pictures we are in a pandemic

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 07/06/2020 09:09

No other ethnic Countries have had death rates like the UK

Well it stands to reason that if a lack of vit D is implicated then ethnic people who grow up in warmer and sunnier countries with little climate variation get sufficient doses, thus mitigating their risk. The point is that BAME in cooler climates do not get sufficient sunlight in comparison to caucasian people who have adapted fairer skin and eyes in response to the environment. Hence the disparity. There are also other factors such as poverty, family structures, attitudes, job dispersion (many working in areas of the public sector with more exposure to people) housing, overcrowding, even things like immigrating from places where fish is a large part of the diet to a place where grain makes up the bulk of the diet etc etc. They will be analysing the data for years to come.

Also in some of these ethnic countries the healthcare infrastructure would not be able to cope with large numbers of people getting sick so they locked down far more aggressively than we did.

Scientists don’t know like your making out because if all was so simple we would have a vaccination underway

No one said it is simple and developing a vaccine has nothing to do with anything.

It is statistically more dangerous to black lives in this country to go out in thousand strong crowds atm face mask or not.

I hope that link works. The horse bolted, she was smacked into the traffic lights and she is in hospital with serious injuries.

I hope the people laughing at her on the video never want help from the police.

TabbyMumz · 07/06/2020 10:27

"The BBC said the police office threw herself off the horse. Hmmm......

And after someone threw a bike at her!!!

Devlesko · 07/06/2020 10:29

I'm BAME, well, the AME bit.
I won't be going to any, I think it's bloody daft and we'll be in lockdown fully, properly before long.
The UK are going to lose mamy more thousands before this is over.

MissEliza · 07/06/2020 10:52

I don't think it's relevant who George Floyd was or what he did. You don't treat another human being like that.

SimonJT · 07/06/2020 10:54

@MissEliza

I don't think it's relevant who George Floyd was or what he did. You don't treat another human being like that.
I completely agree.

Plus the people who are saying “but what about this that he did” sound very similar to people who say “but she had one night stands before” “but she was drinking” alone.

june2007 · 07/06/2020 11:00

Yes and no about George. No because it doesn,t excuse the police behaviour. (we no nothing about that white guys history either. He could be a upstanding citizen or a paedophile ),.However there are those who will loose sympathy because of what he did. To me it doesn,t make a difference, his crime is not relevant.

Flutteryb · 07/06/2020 11:01

I can't believe people think it's more justifiable because he had a past, whatever he has done it was wrong. Even if it had happened following him being caught for committing a serious crime, it still wouldn't be justified because everyone should be entitled to access the court system rather than a white guy decide to kill you. How many white school shooters get shot when they are armed and pose an immediate danger? Not many.

derxa · 07/06/2020 11:02

I don't think it's relevant who George Floyd was or what he did. You don't treat another human being like that. Absolutely. Murder in plain sight.

Alex50 · 07/06/2020 11:18

Kneeling on a mans neck and carry on when he says he can’t breathe is not acceptable, no matter what his passed is, it just makes the policeman a murderer, if he was defending himself a different matter, there is no excuse for this.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 07/06/2020 11:32

The only reason George Floyd was murdered was because he was black. What he did or didn’t do in his past is irrelevant.

His apparent history has been circulating for a few days it didn’t change people’s mind because they know why he was murdered.

Of course it has reinforced the beliefs of those who think his murder has been blown out of proportion

Thisdressneedspockets · 07/06/2020 11:36

I want to go. The estimate is that 1 in 1000 people now have coronavirus, so the chances of coming into contact with someone with it, much less contracting it outdoors are slim.

7dayslater · 07/06/2020 11:39

I went to a protest yesterday. Most people were wearing masks & everyone kept their distance. The chance of contracting coronavirus would have been extremely slim. Worth the risk.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 07/06/2020 11:42

I'm surprised it's taken until now for anyone to mention Floyd's record; there was a long, long piece in the dreaded Mail some time ago with all the details

However even in America, and even with the death penalty (which I don't support), execution's supposed to be subject to due process ... which hardly includes snuffing someone out in the street

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 07/06/2020 11:47

His past shouldnt and doesnt matter. He was murdered in front of witnesses by a man who didnt care that people saw and that he couldn't breath.

The protests arent just about George! Its years and years and years and years of being treated this way. He isnt the first to be killed...
