This guy sings in my garden early morning and evening. He/she has such a beautiful voice! Can anyone please tell me—what kind of bird is this?

clyp.it/user/ta2robre

I've listened to all the recorded bird calls I can find and none of them match!

biddybird · 06/06/2020 13:02

p.s. the most distinctive call is at 34 seconds, and it's repeated at 1'35", 2'16" and 2'33".

It's driving me crazy!

Get the chirpomatic app

frogsareflyinginfromthewest · 06/06/2020 13:05

Sounds like a Thrush or a Chat. Song and Mistle Thrushes sing from the top of the trees, especially morning and evening. See if you can spot it then, to get a visual identification. Good luck!

NotPlayingOut · 06/06/2020 13:08

Sounds rather like the blackbird in my garden, he has a pretty impressive and varied repertoire.

daffodilrosedaisy · 06/06/2020 13:10

It’s a Blackbird, Turdus merula

squashyhat · 06/06/2020 13:14

Yep blackbird. I can hear one in my garden now competing with yours!

iklboo · 06/06/2020 13:41

I've heard birds have regional accents. Our blackbird (Manchester) sounds slightly different to that. Longer trills and scales.

biddybird · 06/06/2020 14:39

I've had blackbird suggested to me before and I've listened to around 2 hrs of professionally-recorded blackbird calls, but I've never heard that quite distinct 7-note arpeggio.

I'm going to check out the mistle thrush now!

biddybird · 06/06/2020 14:47

Unfortunately I have never been able to spot it… so far.

Doesn't sound like the thrushes to me either. It's that distinctive sequence of notes that is repeated over and over.

Yes, Blackbird. Their song is quite variable and that plus the fluty tone is distinctive. Mistle Thrush always reminds me of a Blackbird with no imagination.

Mustbetimeforachange · 06/06/2020 14:50

I have the Birdnet app. It's great. It's amazed me how many different songs a blackbird has.

SevenOceans · 06/06/2020 14:51

I agree with previous posters, I think it's a blackbird.

pinkhousesarebest · 06/06/2020 14:52

Definitely a blackbird - so fruity. And yes, their accents are regional. ( I have told dh you his is the only music I want at my funeral if I die before him).

biddybird · 06/06/2020 14:54

Unfortunately I don't have a device that runs apps otherwise I would love to try out one of those suggested here.

To me this one sounds more melodic than the blackbird recordings I have listened to. Also, I'm fairly certain there is only one of these, whereas blackbirds are fairly communal (I think?).

@pinkhousesarebest That's lovely. I have often thought that I would like to depart this life to a chorus of cricket song.

GalOopNorth · 06/06/2020 15:01

It’s a blackbird

Gorgeous song, different blackbirds will sing different things.

pinkhousesarebest · 06/06/2020 17:37

biddybird nice one too. Though we have a nightingale in our garden now and he has me a bit conflicted. I am one of those strange people that mark the first blackbird song of the year on my calendar.

biddybird · 06/06/2020 18:41

pinkhouse I think I will start doing this!
I've only noticed it for the first time this year.

They are territorial when breeding and a singing male wouldn't tolerate another one encroaching on his space.
BooseysMom · 06/06/2020 19:01

We've got a Song Thrush that has started singing beautifully at dusk and first thing in the morning. They are perfect mimics. This one copies copies car alarms, house sparrows chirruping, and other birds. I hope he stays a while.

WowOoo · 06/06/2020 19:04

Sounds like a blackbird to me too.

The males will sing to announce and their territory.
Beautiful!

WowOoo · 06/06/2020 19:05

and try to protect their territory.

NewYearNewTwatName · 06/06/2020 19:26

I originally thought Robin when I listened.

biddybird · 07/06/2020 12:54

@GerundTheBehemoth Interesting—thank you!
