People "stealing" cats

I just saw one of those viral videos on facebook. I don't know how to link facebook videos on here (anyone know?) But basically a couple are walking home and a lovely healthy looking ginger cat is following them. The cat has no collar but I know my cat hates wearing a collar and always ends up scratching it off.

Basically the boyfriend is filming and the girlfriend says something like "that cat is mine now". The boyfriend says "well if he follows us all the way home, I suppose i'll let you keep him".

Cue the rest of the video being the couple stroking the cat, when the cat stops the girlfriend stops and tries to get its attention again, and more stroking.

When they get to their apartment the girlfriend stands in their hallway and the cat lies on the step not going in.
The girlfriend waits inside and calls for the cat who then walks in and they shut their apartment door and feed it and basically say "you're going to love your new home" -.-

After backlash in the comments, the couple apparantly took the cat to the vet and it wasnt chipped (still doesnt mean it stray) and they've posted a 'found' on a couple of websites and nobody gets back to them within 72 hours, theyre allowed to adopt it -.-

I'm sorry but they goaded that cat to their house. Surely most people give a cat a stroke and then try and stop it following them not try to rehome them??

The 72 hours thing is ridiculous! What if the original owners just dont see the posts and are out there still looking for their cat??
They shouldve left the cat were it was and if the car was visibily hungry then yes probably rehome it.
But it seems the cat was well-looked after, friendly and fed -.-

Wish i knew how to link a video so you could see how annoying they were!

@Gurning but cats love to roam! Some cats love being housecats whereas others would go crazy being stuck in!
You are feeding cats so no they are not choosing you, they are after a second meal! They don't choose owners! Cats want what they can get.
Cats are not the most loyal of animals and will eat from others but what you are doing is totally unfair on the owners.

Cats are very smart. My cat knows exactly when feeding times are and is always in the house at similar time waiting for food.
Those cats dont go to your house because they "choose" you as their godly owner. They are there because they're waiting for food which could lead to some cats becoming unncessarily overweight and lead to health problems!

People should still be careful if they see an unhealthy looking cat as that may be it's natural features (same with how some humans are naturally skinny) or it may have some health problems.
If you are thinking it's a stray and are concerned then always check with a vet first!

Thanks for the reports. Looks like there was a previously banned poster on this thread causing upset. We've sent them on their way.
We'll make a few deletions and hopefully things will get back on track.

gurning you sound like my utter bitch if a NDN. Do you give cats grilled chicken and tinned salmon to tempt them in? Then claim it must be underfed because "it needed" the titbits?

PleasePassTheCoffeeThanks · 05/06/2020 16:22

I thought cats didn’t belong to anybody? At least this is what I understood from all the posts about them being free to roam, ‘owners’ not being responsible to prevent them from shitting in peoples gardens etc.

Gingerkittykat · 05/06/2020 18:47

Cats have the right to roam but they still have owners who are the people who feed, neuter, chip, vaccinate and get them vet attention when needed.

MrsSnitchnose · 06/06/2020 14:00

This is exactly why my two stay in. Too many thieves and arseholes around. One of them would be fine to go out as she hates everyone but me and would have the hand off someone who tried to touch her, but the other is far too trusting and friendly.

Boom45 · 06/06/2020 14:24

There is cat keeps trying to "choose" me. Irritating thing. If a cat wanders there's always a chance it'll get hit by a car, fall in a pond or decide to live somewhere else - that's one of the things about cats isn't it? If you dont want to take that risk you keep in inside surely?

bruffin · 06/06/2020 17:22

When we got our first rescue cat CPL advised to keep her inside for 2 weeks, she launched herself outside upstair window twice!

Oliversmumsarmy · 07/06/2020 08:22

One of our cats went missing for a few days.
We went door to door to see if anyone in the area had seen her and for them to check garages and outbuildings for her.

The number of people who knew her as the cat that came for breakfast or for treats at a certain time during the day was unbelievable
I think she was having 6 breakfasts and several snack times during the day.
Even would wait at a certain point in the road to walk with a guy on his way home from work because he always gave her a treat.

She is a fat cat and we now know why.

Good job no one thought she was a stray and kept her because she is so friendly.

Atm mine are all indoor cats so that has put a stop to her wandering.

sashh · 07/06/2020 08:30

it the cats "owners" gave a shit, they would have had their cat chipped.... cats choose if they want to live with you or not.

Not neccesarily in the US, in many places cats HAVE to be house cats because of wild animals and or traffic, ideally, yes the cat would be chipped but it's not seen as essential as it is here.

pawsies · 07/06/2020 08:35

If the original owners cared that much they'd supervise the cat outdoors or build a catio or something.
If you let your pet wander free you can't complain when something happens to it (gets run over/stolen or whatever).

Mumoblue · 07/06/2020 08:47

Cats need to be chipped, otherwise you couldn't know if it is or is not a stray.
Cats are wanderers, you need some way to track them.

When I was a kid an old lady found one of our cats who had gone for a too-long wander. She contacted us when she saw our posters, but she lived alone and clearly adored our cat and treated him like a prince, whereas we had several cats and he was picked on by some of them. My mum went round, had a cup of tea with her and let her keep the cat. Apparently she was almost in tears when my mum said she could keep him.
No moral here, just a happy ending accidental-cat-thief story.

Oliversmumsarmy · 08/06/2020 08:22

I have my cats chipped and they are indoor cats now. But one of mine went on a wander a few years ago. We kept seeing him over fences and wandering in the distance in fields.

He eventually came home after a few days.

Just because a cat is out doors and not chipped doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a home.

Just because a cat is friendly and follows you to your home when you encourage it doesn’t mean it hasn’t got a home.

Just because it hasn’t got a collar doesn’t mean it hasn’t got a home.

Just because a cat is on the street doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a home.

Just because no one has come forward after you have made little significant attempt of trying to find the owners after 2 days doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a home.
Cat sitter might have accidentally let it out and family is on holiday.

Even in the US where there are mainly indoor cats these things still apply.
