People "stealing" cats

I just saw one of those viral videos on facebook. I don't know how to link facebook videos on here (anyone know?) But basically a couple are walking home and a lovely healthy looking ginger cat is following them. The cat has no collar but I know my cat hates wearing a collar and always ends up scratching it off.

Basically the boyfriend is filming and the girlfriend says something like "that cat is mine now". The boyfriend says "well if he follows us all the way home, I suppose i'll let you keep him".

Cue the rest of the video being the couple stroking the cat, when the cat stops the girlfriend stops and tries to get its attention again, and more stroking.

When they get to their apartment the girlfriend stands in their hallway and the cat lies on the step not going in.
The girlfriend waits inside and calls for the cat who then walks in and they shut their apartment door and feed it and basically say "you're going to love your new home" -.-

After backlash in the comments, the couple apparantly took the cat to the vet and it wasnt chipped (still doesnt mean it stray) and they've posted a 'found' on a couple of websites and nobody gets back to them within 72 hours, theyre allowed to adopt it -.-

I'm sorry but they goaded that cat to their house. Surely most people give a cat a stroke and then try and stop it following them not try to rehome them??

The 72 hours thing is ridiculous! What if the original owners just dont see the posts and are out there still looking for their cat??
They shouldve left the cat were it was and if the car was visibily hungry then yes probably rehome it.
But it seems the cat was well-looked after, friendly and fed -.-

Wish i knew how to link a video so you could see how annoying they were!

I'm not stealing anything. I am merely hosting a vagrant cat until it tries of me and moves on.
If the animal needed a vet, then I'd take it and wash my hands of it. Not my pet, not my problem.

But if a cute animal is loitering, I'm going to play with it, feed it etc.

Gurning · 05/06/2020 12:04

*tires of me.

bruffin · 05/06/2020 12:11

A cat turned up on my back doorstep at christmas, very very hungry. I took her to the vet, wasnt chipped.

I registered her as found at the vets
I put her up on various missing pet sites ,
I put up posters
I put a paper collar on her with our phone number
Knocked on a few doors and on our local whatsap
Nothing, not sure what else i could do.
She is still with us, neutered and chipped so i dont feel guilty and didnt steal her. She chose us!

Wolfiefan · 05/06/2020 12:12

We had a beautiful visiting ginger. He came every day. Cuddles? Yes. But you don’t feed someone else’s pet (he was clearly a much loved pet). What if it has an allergy or needs special food? You don’t invite it in your house. If it comes in then you put it out.
I paid for my cats. I feed them, five vet treatment, pay the bills and my family love them to bits. You don’t just take a pet from a family.
Want a cat? Adopt your own.
And there are unfortunately strays in the U.K. check for chip, paper collar to contact owner and post on social media etc to try and find owner.

Fluffybutter · 05/06/2020 12:25

@Gurning
You are a despicable person .. The excuses you give are selfish , bullshit.
Anyone who agrees with you is just as bad .
What if you fed someone else’s cat and you made them I’ll?
That not your problem either ?
What a prickish thing to say

Fluffybutter · 05/06/2020 12:25

*ill

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 05/06/2020 12:30

I got my cat chipped. 7 years later we went to change some details on it, the vet went to check the chip and couldn't find it so I had to pay again to get him chipped.

Gurning · 05/06/2020 12:37

If a cat is likely to be made ill from regular food it might find on anyone's property, then it needs to be kept in. Some people put out food for foxes and hedgehogs.

The point is, I'm not changing. I'm not breaking the law, and if a person doesn't want their cat leaving, then lock it in.

Dyrne · 05/06/2020 12:42

What an odd way to live your life:

“I’m doing something utterly twattish and potentially upsetting to people but there isn’t a specific law against it so I’m going to keep doing it”

Just curious, what other things do you do specifically because there isn’t a law preventing you?

Nonotthisagain · 05/06/2020 12:44

@Gurning Get a cat if you want one! Don't bloody steal someone else's precious pet. You are an utter bell end.

Gurning · 05/06/2020 12:49

The fact is that people buy pets that have a legal loophole around them, and it's right to roam. You want a pet that you don't have to keep an eye on, or even keep on your property, so you need to accept that such a pet is not the same as a dog.
If you don't want people 'stealing' your pet, buy a dog.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 05/06/2020 12:49

My cat doesn't wear a collar because he never keeps them on and I'm fed up of buying them. He is chipped but non cat owners don't usually think to check this before 'adopting' a cat. My cat is a 6kg male who is clearly cared for but someone is feeding him. He is putting on weight despite being on a strict diet in my house because the vet has declared him overweight. Whoever is doing this please stop, you are killing my cat.

CatRamsey · 05/06/2020 12:53

I can't believe people are arguing with you about this OP.

This makes me sad. I do agree that the owners should've had their cat microchipped, but regardless, what those people did was extremely wrong. I feel so sad for the cat being taken from it's home and for it's owners missing their baby.

I can't view the video as it says the link has been removed but I don't think I want to see it anyway, I'll just get angry!

My mother stole a cat from the family opposite. I felt so sorry for the poor neighbour, as she obviously felt that she couldn't go against a defenceless little old lady which is bollocks going by the abuse she dished out in private.

Fact is, it was a ginger tom, she liked ginger toms, it visited, so she bought cat food and lots of treats to make him come in until she could shut the door and say he was hers. I found out later when I saw the Missing posters - she'd claimed that it wasn't the same cat, it was just a coincidence, she rescued it really, it chose her, etc, etc.

The poor thing got hit by a car one day whilst trying to cross the road home. She kept it inside for days without veterinary treatment because she didn't want him scanned. Eventually, it dragged itself out and another neighbour found it and called the RSPCA, who put him to sleep immediately as he had a spinal fracture. When the inspector started knocking on doors 'Oh, that's the one that visits me, it comes from Them over There'.

Bloody arsehole.

NailsNeedDoing · 05/06/2020 13:16

If people are going to choose to have no control over their pets by allowing them outside unsupervised, then this is the risk they take. Odd how cat owners care that their pet might be liked by other people, because on the whole they couldn’t care less about the inconvenience their pet causes to other people.

I have literally no sympathy for people whose cats get stolen. If you want to keep your cat to yourself, keep it in your own property.

Wolfiefan · 05/06/2020 13:19

There’s a difference between someone petting your cat and taking it in and feeding it.
For the last couple of years my old girl was on £60 of medication a month. I bet no one who stole her would’ve paid that. Angry

JacobReesMogadishu · 05/06/2020 13:22

This is why my cat is a house cat. I’m far too scared of him being stolen to let him out.

firstmentat · 05/06/2020 13:25

@CoquettishIngenue
Yes, got it back, after the vet verified the chip # (four years worth of photos of said cat was not deemed to be sufficient proof).
I still suspect that she goes back for snacks to their house though, that animal has absolutely no morals. Grin

Wolfiefan · 05/06/2020 13:27

Cats don’t have morals. But people should.
I had to go round to my neighbour and confess I had found their cat in my house. Walked past a black furry body on the bed and stroked it. Thought that felt wrong. Because it wasn’t my cat! Shock
I picked him up and gave him a cuddle but put him out and warned her if he was ever missing to come and check with us. Disclaimer. We did have a VERY similar cat. Grin
