Did any teachers have it easy over last 11 weeks?

I nearly lost my shit yesterday with someone who insisted most teachers have had an easy life and not doing a proper day's work during Covid.
I'm not a teacher but many friends are and I don't know any who haven't had a full workload. It's absolutely not the message that's coming across on social media either. Most teachers saying they've done more work.
But then I wondered if my snapshot was accurate.
Does anyone personally know any teacher who has coasted/had an easy ride? (I am not talking about your kids' teachers who you have opinions about but friends or family where you have more insight.)
I'm hoping it's a no tbh and I feel justified for feeling so put out.
Aibu
Yes - yeah the teachers I know have had it easy
No - you're right all the ones I know have worked as much if not more.

whining moaning how dare you speak to us like that? Our children have been massively let down and some parents are at breaking point trying to work and homeschool at the same time.

Read the research from Southampton children do not spread this. Open all schools over next 2 weeks anything else is madness.

GazeboParty · 09/06/2020 08:08

How about you cut and paste what they have been told to do. I'd rather not - too outing. Teachers on here have said that the Gov have not told schools they have been expected to teach in any way pre 1st June - that they were expected to look after key workers' kids and vulnerable kids - is this the case? I have written to my MP to seek clarification too. I have locked at the guidance on the website and it's just a long list of internet links.

Boulshired · 09/06/2020 08:17

I cannot believe the lack of empathy from some posters about children’s lack of Education. Being the parent reading and witnessing other people’s children receiving a full education whilst theirs gets scraps. Those taking exams in the near future, whilst the exam boards will take Covid into account it will still be peer graded. Parents should be concerned and parents have been complaining.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 09/06/2020 08:25

Extended holiday!!!!? I bloody wish.

I work 3 days a week. Currently working 5 just to keep on top of it all. It’s just madness, even then on cutting corners.

Is this re the National Curriculum being suspended?

I know in our key worker bubbles the focus was on pastoral care rather than educating (children completed the tasks set on the online learning tool by their class teachers with our support)

There is a feeling now too that children in school shouldn’t be getting ‘more’ than those not in school, either because their yr group isn’t back yet or due to their parents choices, so again, the work we are doing in school is the same as the home-learning that is being is set.

GazeboParty · 09/06/2020 08:55

Is this re the National Curriculum being suspended? Yes that might be it, interpreted as schools are not required to teach?

nowaitaminute · 09/06/2020 08:56

And no other profession received 13 weeks off a year

WHY do people think this?? There are PLENTY of jobs that get 13 weeks or more time off a year!!! My dh only works 6months of the year and is paid a full salary...Hmm

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 09/06/2020 09:00

Stop press announcement - PE teachers being furloughed!

Hope everyone is happy now

Smellbellina · 09/06/2020 09:03

Yes that might be it, interpreted as schools are not required to teach?

We took it as giving some lea way in what to cover with HL, opportunity to go over previous topics and ensure they are embedded etc, as it’s continued we have picked up covering the topics we would have covered this term (we also sent parents a grid showing the topics for each subject etc)

I don’t know of any schools personally who have taken it as an opportunity to suspend teaching completely. I can see how it could be construed in that way, but I can’t for the life of me think of any reason why a school would, very dodgy ground indeed and there is likely to be something of a reckoning at the end of this.

GazeboParty · 09/06/2020 09:03

I wish we'd stop going on about the 13 weeks holiday - it is the nature of the job - there are perks in every job...whether it's paid or unpaid is irrelevant it's part of their package and if there is to be a summer school (I think it's unlikely) teachers that agree to take part should be paid extra.

GazeboParty · 09/06/2020 09:06

@Smellbellina Interesting point of view - it definitely was being used on here by known MN teachers as a defense for the lack of distanced teaching.

It's all very well suspending the National Curriculum but the GCSE and A level exams in 2021 have not been cancelled.

senior leaders have never been so disappointed in their teaching staff!

Isn’t it their job to ensure the teachers are working to the standards they require, you know, as the Heads/SLT?!

Myothercarisalsoshit · 09/06/2020 13:24

@FrenchSeal

DH is a senior manager and director at a company that sells a lot of products and services to schools- he's had a lot of conversations over the last few weeks and months with headteachers and MAT CEOs.

The general message he's getting is that senior leaders have never been so disappointed in their teaching staff! Many have been telling DH that many teachers have been taking the approach of least effort possible- sending out the same worksheets every week, not replying to parents' emails and refusing any discussion of online teaching like private schools are offering.

Many headteachers have commented to DH that the government would have been more cost-effective in furloughing them until September!

Absolute bollocks. As if they'd share views like that with a contractor. Honestly, the rubbish spouted on here!
CallmeAngelina · 09/06/2020 15:03

I don't believe your tale for one second, FrenchSeal, but if there are any issues with specific teachers' performance, then it is a pretty poor indictment of any SLT that lets it ride.

I’m looking for a new job, what does he do!?

GazeboParty · 09/06/2020 20:41

Oil rig workers get great holidays - 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off - bloody hard though.

The work isn't as hard as you would think.
The hours suck.
The training is intense.
The food is excellent.

As are the rec facilities.

GazeboParty · 09/06/2020 20:59

@FrippEnos you used to be a rigger?
I knew quite a few riggers in the 1990s, they stayed with us frequently when we were students - maybe a dozen they all said the same - they all made good money but mentally it was tough as hell - they hated it (I never said the work was hard did you notice?), the money was good, the time off was great but being on the rigs was mentally hard - the food or the leisure facilities were irrelevant - it felt like doing time and they found it increasingly challenging to keep going out there. But maybe you were mentally tougher?

nowaitaminute · 09/06/2020 21:04

@TiptoeStar he works in shipping. 3weeks on, 3 weeks off. Over 50k

nowaitaminute · 09/06/2020 21:06

AND if he is out of the country for a certain amount of days in a year (any start to finish) he gets all his tax back!!

FrippEnos · 09/06/2020 21:08

GazeboParty

On shore and off shore.
Yes it is mentally wearing.

We are on a thread about teachers workload so yes I am going to take your post as meaning the work as well.

The facilities are not irrelevant as they come as part of the job.

You friends didn't like it and that would be part of the issues that they are talking about. I have friends that if it weren't for age would still be out on the rigs.

GazeboParty · 09/06/2020 22:00

I suspect you are always right @FrippEnos regardless of the topic!😁
