WIBU to play the guitar and sing in my back garden?

Reading the multitude of threads over recent weeks about people enraging each other with their garden behaviours - barbecues, bonfires, even bagpipes Shock

I was thinking about getting my guitar outside this afternoon and playing a bit of music in my garden. It's a large garden but we do have neighbours on both sides who would certainly hear it if they were outside. I am not dreadful (I used to get paid to do it) but of course that doesn't mean it's to everyone's taste! It's folk music, mostly. My neighbours do have parties (when not in lockdown), have noisy children, play their own pop music in the garden and one of them is a welder so it's not always quiet.

WIBU?

I'd hate this please don't inflict your guitar playing on your neighbours!

BusterTheBulldog · 01/06/2020 13:03

Ah @Floralnomad i would love Will Varley next door! However, I fear I may tire of even him if it was non stop!

I think an hour is fine, all night is not generally.

Flymetothetoon · 01/06/2020 13:05

I'd hate this because I can't stand folk music but even if you sounded like Karen Carpenter I'd cringe for you.

Inextremis · 01/06/2020 13:06

It's got to be better than my neighbour, who is currently training a sheepdog (we're rural). All I can hear is 'lie down!', 'LIE down!', 'LIE DOWN!', followed by a few 'gettup's, a 'come by, and then more 'LIE DOWN's.

I retaliate by throwing squeaky balls for my (not working) dogs :) Dog wars, gotta love 'em :)

pigsDOfly · 01/06/2020 13:08

Depends where you live I suppose.

From the sound of it people are pretty noisy around you so it might blend into the background.

Where I live it's often deadly quiet and it would seem loud and intrusive.

I wouldn't want to have some one else guitar playing and singing inflicted on me tbh.

TheFencePainter · 01/06/2020 13:09

Two sets of my neighbours seem to think there musical rights trump everyone else's...
I can't use my garden as there is always someone else blaring out music in theirs. I just want a little peace and quiet!

Assert dominance with well timed Heavy Metal😂

JacobReesMogadishu · 01/06/2020 13:10

No, not good. Why inflict your noise on others when you can practice inside.?

GabriellaMontez · 01/06/2020 13:15

Im sure you're really good. But. Spare your neighbours. Its not to everyone's taste.

Branleuse · 01/06/2020 13:27

even if they dont like it, if its occasional then they should just put up with it. You have the right to play guitar in your own garden if you like.

If you did it every day then id say that was pushing it, but occasionally? Tough shit. youre allowed to live too.

lidoshuffle · 01/06/2020 13:28

Other people's uninvited noise is always awful in my space, even if it were bloomin' Julian Bream.

user12345796 · 01/06/2020 13:29

Sounds lovely

iVampire · 01/06/2020 13:29

I think it’s OK as long as you don’t do it for too long. 20-30min x 2 with a break in between ?

krispycreme · 01/06/2020 13:30

DH plays in the garden, he's fantastic though. Not folk music though and he plays without any background music so it's actually pretty quiet.

NoseHair · 01/06/2020 13:30

Oh god no. Why do people feel the need to force their own noise on other people?

I may be slightly biased considering I’ve had two neighbours now who play guitar badly with their windows open.

Chochito · 01/06/2020 13:32

I am working from home, as are all of my neighbours apart from one retired lady. I have the windows open as it seems pointless to close them and turn on air-con. If someone started singing or playing music in a nearby garden it would be a pain in the backside. Don't do it during working hours or for too long, OP.

my2bundles · 01/06/2020 13:32

Wouldn't like it, one of my kids plays various instruments and sings, He is good but I make sure he is considerate to the neighbours who won't want to hear it.

LittlePearl · 01/06/2020 13:35

I would love it (assuming you can sing).

I can hear a local music covers trio practising in a garden nearby as I write. We live in a village and they're popular and it's gentle, not really loud.....it's great.

WalkTheLine99 · 01/06/2020 13:37

It is your space for your enjoyment, everyone makes noise in their garden, be it having the radio on or having laughing children playing

This. I’ve lost all patience with the ‘any noise in the garden is anti social’ brigade. It’s your space too, as long as you’re not taking the piss volume/time wise, sing and play to your hearts content.

squiggleirl · 01/06/2020 13:38

I think it depends.....will you close your eyes while you sing?

SimonJT · 01/06/2020 13:39

I have a big exam coming up so I’m playing piano everyday, luckily neither of the neighbours mind that I have the windows open. In normal times a friend would join me, he is a professional singer so no bum notes!

DilemmaADay · 01/06/2020 13:40

Sounds lovely OP, I wouldnt object.
Sounds far better than my neighbours, who have been having parties and warbling on the karaoke machine till all hours of the morning. Even during the I'm carers clap the chuffing karaoke gets wheeled out. Envy

onceuponatimeinsuburbia · 01/06/2020 13:41

Is this a reverse? Just don't. One of the most stressful things for many people Is the inability to control their own environment. So no matter how good your voice or your intentions you'll be inflicting noise on people who for a variety of reasons might not want to hear it. We've had a few locals staging impromptu concerts 'to cheer people up' with no thought that people might be more content without their efforts.

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 01/06/2020 13:42

One of my neighbours does this!
I love nothing better than laying in a nice relaxing bath and listening to him through the open window. It’s lovely. We even WhatsApp him with requests.

Fluffybutter · 01/06/2020 13:44

Yabu just because it’s folk music .. no thanks

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 01/06/2020 13:44

Why would you want to do that?
