To think it is utterly crazy that shielders can now meet up with people?

At midnight last night the Government slipped out a frankly bizarre new alteration to the rules in that shielders, who have been told on the one hand to expect that they will need to shield beyond 30 June, will from tomorrow be able to not only leave the house, but meet up with others from different households.

"From Monday, the 2.2 million people who’ve been shielding can go outside for first time. This will be with either members of their household, or, if they live alone, to meet one other person."

Further information will follow in today's press conference.

Am I the only one to think this is absolutely ridiculous, and not at all in the interests of "the science?"

How does it work with furloughed shielders? We have a number of staff who are furloughed due to shielding as that was government approved so have been receiving 80% of salary rather than just SSP. Do they now have to return to work or move onto SSP? It's a fucking minefield and almost a full time job to keep up with daily changes.

Inthemuckheap · 31/05/2020 17:53

Sorry this refers to key workers not furloughed due to no work.

Are you in a union sam? Join one today if not.

I would be interested to know this. I’m a shielding NHS front line worker. Initially I was redeployed to online training so they had work for me. Now I am not working but on fully pay (obviously very grateful) but wondering how that will change as shielding levels change.

Ze1tGeist · 31/05/2020 18:04

i’m shielding, it’s Day 76 today and am i bollocks off out to the park.

i live alone apart from my cat. my friend who collects meds for me joins me in my garden for a socially distant coffee once a week - we’ve done this from the start.

it will be how i continue until it’s clear that a second peak isn’t hurtling towards us. i wouldn’t trust the government to run a bath, never mind a country at varying levels of risk from a global pandemic.

you do you, and all that.

Mustbetimeforachange · 31/05/2020 18:04

Shielding DH has been out gorvax all every day since lockdown - we live in the countryside & rarely pass anyone. The past week he's been playing tennis. Nothing will change for him, except we may have people found to our garden who will stay 2m from him & use a separate loo. The shielding is advice, not law. Plus DH can think for himself & assess risk.

BatShite · 31/05/2020 18:05

'"Those being shielded still remain at risk and are advised to only leave the house once a day. They should not go to work or the shops and should avoid crowded places where they can’t social distance."'

Therefor, furloughed shielders..this announcement should make no difference at all as they are still shielding even if they dare go outside once a day or so.

DragonTrainedByLucy · 31/05/2020 18:08

To whoever said the Government are damned if they do, damned if they don't. They were damned because we were not mentioned for ten weeks. No updates on what was happening in the briefings.

Also worried about work here. My manager started a rumour two weeks ago to say I would be back in the office tomorrow. I ended up being furloughed again - I know they will kick off and tell me I have to be back as frontline staff in a public facing role even though I can do my job from home until October - at full capacity work wise (and more).

It's really stressful.

Juliet2014 · 31/05/2020 18:09

They’re not forced to go out
If they’re worried, stay in.
Simple.
We are talking about adults here (they’re making the decision if their child is shielded) and the government is treating them as such.

ToothFairyNemesis · 31/05/2020 18:13

Aside from your patronising tone, you are very naive. It’s really not simple!

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 31/05/2020 18:14

The way that this has been announced just makes me feel like the government are planning all of this on the back of a fab packet.

On Thursday when Boris announced the easing of lockdown from 1st June he categorically said that it didn't apply to those shielding and their restrictions were unchanged. Now 3 days later that has changed??? Why? On the basis of what evidence and why wasn't that known on Thursday?

Redcherries · 31/05/2020 18:14

I can’t believe people consider themselves missing out on being shielded. It’s absolutely fucking shit. And we still can’t go shopping for food so no, they shouldn’t have their food delivery cancelled ffs. I’ve not had the food delivery because I’ve been able to sort us out using local suppliers etc until I managed to get a priority slot 6 weeks or so into shielding, there are much more personally (not medical) vulnerable than I am and it’s pissed me off it would be considered ok to remove the food delivered to them. That’s fucking callous. We can go for a walk, that’s all.

I will go for walks because I am in an area and have the means to do so safely, not everyone is and they will need to make that call.

The lady working in a nursery, that’s shocking. One of my anger issues at the moment is that shielded aren’t as protected with regards jobs and finance as they should be. I work for myself, I’m furloughed whilst my business partner carries the workload. None of my team are shielded but if they were we would be doing everything we possibly could through the gov or the business to support them.

Aridane · 31/05/2020 18:24

It is airborne, why on Earth do you think all other countries are wearing masks

Doh...

The ‘doH’ is on you, @Pacmanitee

If you were to read “the science”, there is some considerable debate and controversy as to whether or not coronavirus is in fact airborne!

Juliet2014 · 31/05/2020 18:24

* Aside from your patronising tone, you are very naive. It’s really not simple!*

Enlighten me

Juliet2014 · 31/05/2020 18:27

Because I have read this

www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-on-shielding-and-protecting-extremely-vulnerable-persons-from-covid-19/guidance-on-shielding-and-protecting-extremely-vulnerable-persons-from-covid-19

And it’s very clear

The problem is requires time - to read documents. And that seems to be beyond so many.

Pacmanitee · 31/05/2020 18:27

Yes exactly, in certain environments ie hospitals there is a debate. Your statement was incorrect, people aren't wearing masks as it's airborne, it's a bone of contention at the moment, but the masks many other countries are recommending for their citizens are effective against droplets, not airborne. So stating it as fact was incorrect as was using mask wearers abroad as something to back it up. Again, doh.

WwMILd · 31/05/2020 18:29

@SamsMumsCataracts
That’s not right, check out ACAS
@scarbados
Please, just give your head a wobble. Think yourself lucky you ‘just missed out on being a box of free food’. You come across as an arse.

The announcing of the easing of the lockdown didn't have the desired effect. The Dominic Cummings saga didn't go away as expected. So now the lives of the most vulnerable are being used in place of a dead cat.

VelveteenBunni · 31/05/2020 18:32

I really do think they are trying to kill us as pp's have said.

This is a shambles.

Chig · 31/05/2020 18:34

My DH who is a front line worker, and moved out ( temporary ) as our DS needs shielding phoned me earlier and said not to take him out tomorrow. I told him I had no intention of doing so.

Our twin DD are in reception, so should start tomorrow, but our DS needs protecting so I’m not sending them in.

I need to see how things go. I think the numbers will rise.

DragonTrainedByLucy · 31/05/2020 18:35

@Juliet2014 Trust me, those of us that are shielding have had plenty of time to read the guidance, and the multiple updates to it.

You really have no idea how many families are having to make life changing and complex decisions because they have someone on the shielding list in their household.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 31/05/2020 18:36

Exactly what a friend of mine said today, including the dead cat reference. I completely agree.
BeyondDreamsOfBeyondFourWalls · 31/05/2020 18:41

The stupid thing to me, is that those who badly need the time out in the fresh air - people in blocks of flats - are no more able to go out than they were yesterday. They are still going to run into people in the hall and need to touch buttons and doors in communal areas :(

Indeed

Aridane · 31/05/2020 18:44

Yes exactly, in certain environments ie hospitals there is a debate

NO!! Outside,of hospitals - the scientific Community is debating it and there is now no consensus as to whether or not it is airborne,
