They are a pest! I have always disliked them. I know Im not BU by the way. This is something that needs to be looked into properly and where better to start than here on mumsnet where the standard reply about these crap cars is "But I need a tank to drive my kids to school" They are NOT safer than other cars! Its a myth peddled by the car industry and only people who have no clue about cars believe that! (So plenty of people sadly).

OP posts:

They take up far too much room. They are too big for the average parking space, and people who drive them seem to often be shit at parking anyway, and leave them spread over 2 spaces. They are too wide for narrow lanes and roads. Tax the fuckers to Oblivion

Mine is shorter than an estate car, not anywhere near the average parking space size and I’ve never parked over 2. Am I allowed to keep it? If not I’m not due to change my car yet, but happy for you to finance if you feel I should Grin

Flaxmeadow · 31/05/2020 17:36

It might work for me if my employer was happy with me arriving at 11 and leaving at 3.

Obviously public transport would become vastly improved and a lot cheaper

GreytExpectations · 31/05/2020 17:38

Obviously public transport would become vastly improved and a lot cheaper

And how exactly would that happen?

Notmyfirstusername · 31/05/2020 17:38

There are millions of people who have disabilities but no blue badge including quite a lot of elderly and young children. Those in the gap might not look disabled to you, but still require a SUV and might not want the stress of applying for a blue badge.

After my illness, I tried most of the cars on the market, but all of them were too low ( the Jazz and Yaris were awful) and the suspension was physically painful to me, before I'd even thought about wheelchair boot space . I could no longer use either of the family's cars ( both hybrid/ electric) without my husband frequently stopping the car for pain breaks. It's much less painful in a SUV, although I'd like to have a long chat to whichever bugger who thought sports suspension in most cars as a good idea!
I've tweeted Elon Musk to ask him to build a high SUV for his next Tesla, but until he does that and I win the lottery in order to pay for it, I'll deal with your disapproval OP.

GreytExpectations · 31/05/2020 17:39

Seriously, why is none of the "ban SUV" posters addressing the points raised about disabled people???

FrippEnos · 31/05/2020 17:39

I have always wanted to know if those so intent on banning cars and personal vehicles from the town and city centres are the ones that are complaining about the death of town and city centres?

2007Millie · 31/05/2020 17:39

@fishonabicycle

You seem to be reeling off opinions, mostly absurd ones, rather than actual facts.

dobbyssoc · 31/05/2020 17:39

@Flaxmeadow so what about these scenarios.

You have very young DC (need prams, bottles, toys etc) you would like to go to a family trip to the beach. Previously I could jump into my car with everything we would need including a parasol/tent, food, water, chairs, changing bits, changes of clothes, pram etc. Now I have to carry all this as well as DC to my nearest public transport. Expect them to be happy going on a longer trip as let's face it with public transport you have to do various stops etc to then get to the beach. You then have your day and then you take at this point probably tied DC all the way back on that?

Yeah that's going to work!

Rhayader · 31/05/2020 17:41

There really aren’t that many 7 seater cars, particularly when you are looking for something affordable and not diesel... We live in London and have a big family.

@penguinsbegin You can get winches installed to get wheelchairs in/out of cars. Lots of people with physical disabilties do not need a wheelchair.

Q5 a status symbol?! Hahaha

mylittlesandwich · 31/05/2020 17:48

@penguinsbegin lol status symbol. I have a "big white SUV". It's a 64 plate Sportage. It is if anything less of a "status symbol" than my lovely orange metallic smart car was. However a baby with a pram and a smart forfour just didn't work. Trust me I tried. When I looked locally within my budget, that was what I came up with but it's hardly inspirational!

GreytExpectations · 31/05/2020 17:49

If you are buying a big white SUV you might as well tattoo I'M A TWAT AND I WANT YOU ALL TO KNOW IT across your forehead.

I think the people who should have Twat written in their forehead are those that say things like the above...

HellloBambinos · 31/05/2020 17:49

@GreytExpectations I have Confused

There are thousands of people with disabilities, visible and invisible that we have a duty to accommodate to a high standard. These means better provision on public transport and the availability of certain aids such as SUVs in some instances, and access to city roads and parking if required. We’ve also got a duty to implement efficient systems so that people don’t feel like they are jumping through a crazy amount of hoops to be accommodated. That should all be a given (even though I know it currently isn’t).

But cars in general and (most) SUVs especially are fucking terrible for the environment. We need to be better and reduce our reliance on them for the sake of the planet. Cities are a good place to start because they generally have some infrastructure in place already that can be enhanced to support this. And most people are able to use them if they’ve not got the option of the car.

We need to work towards fewer cars AND better accessibility for disabled people, we shouldn’t see the two as mutually exclusive.

HorseChestnutTree · 31/05/2020 17:50

Yes this would be another advantage. Public transport would become even more accessible to the disabled.

Erm, OK, if you so Confused Care to elaborate?

2007Millie · 31/05/2020 17:51

@penguinsbegin

Well you are the one coming across more of a twat if I'm honest.

SimonJT · 31/05/2020 17:52

Also, I would never personally own a white car, byt white is often the ‘free’ colour which is why in the last 8 or so years we have seen a rise in the number of white cars.

HellloBambinos · 31/05/2020 17:53

@dobbyssoc

It might be a pain in the arse but in the grand scheme of things, is it the end of the world? A pram and a backpack and your sorted. What do you think people did 50 years ago?

HellloBambinos · 31/05/2020 17:54

*you’re Blush

As an aside, I would love to see you pack a tent, parasol, chairs, food/drink for the family and clothes, nappies, suncream etc into a backpack. I have very Mr Bean type images in my head.

GreytExpectations · 31/05/2020 17:56

A pram and a backpack and your sorted.

Thats not nearly enough for families with more than one child. A lot of families have a toddler and a baby, or more and one backpack and pushchair is not enough for a day out at the beach. Seriously, people need to get their heads around the idea that other people don't live in the same little bubbles that they do.

MarieQueenofScots · 31/05/2020 17:57

What do you think people did 50 years ago?

50 years ago my mother and father were children going on days out in the family cars....

2007Millie · 31/05/2020 17:58

What do you think people did 50 years ago?

Ermmm...got in their car and drove?

Francina670 · 31/05/2020 17:58

Nevermind SUVs. Round here every other house seems to own a VW Transporter. Now they really are ugly and fuel consumption for those weekends at the beach must be astronomical. The owners seem to avoid censure as they’re associated with wholesome hobbies like surfing, camping and cycling.

HorseChestnutTree · 31/05/2020 17:59

I think the message from those who say we should all rely on public transport is that we should not be going to the beach, or any other 'unnecessary journeys' . All those pesky townies wanting a day out? Terrible for the planet and so should be sacrificed for the greater good.
