If someone gave you a million

If someone gave you a million pounds to start a business, what business would you start?

Riffing off the interview question thread, I’ve been asked this and thought it was an interesting one as it shows a little about someone’s true passions/hobbies

@Ineverdidmind

Thanks! Want to be my first investor? ... Grin

Samtsirch · 30/05/2020 21:12

@ShowOfHands
Which one, the allotment or the animal sanctuary?
Whichever one, you are so lucky, and will you be recruiting any time soon?😊

Curlyshabtree · 30/05/2020 21:15

Buy houses and charge low rents.

cheesyrats · 30/05/2020 21:17

I'd buy a big house with lots of land and start a business to do with growing plants in some way.

Nottobesoldseparately · 30/05/2020 21:18

I'd have enough to do 4 things I'd love to do.

Buy a pub, with rooms in the dales, and cater for walkers and locals in the main.

It would have enough land for me to breed Labradors and set up a campsite.

And an annexe to set up a kick ass deli with a fuckton of amazing cheeses!

Cheeseismymiddlename · 30/05/2020 21:18

Looked reading these replies. So many I would want to do so I would have to open a small animal farm with a boutique B and B / restaurant / wedding dress shop . It would be a really happy place . X

BrieAndChilli · 30/05/2020 21:24

Another thing I’d like to do is start a charity that helps care leavers. So many just get chucked out the minute they turn 18, even if they are doing exams etc as that’s when the money stops. I’m not sure what but I’d love to create some sort of programme where there could be mentored by a family, people who would give them advice and maybe somewhere to visit for the holidays etc.
I was adopted but it wasn’t a good match so the minute I went to uni I was told I was an adult now and not to bother coming home for holidays. It was souls destroying and very very lonely. I remember sitting in my uni halls and was the only one there for the Easter holidays. The following Christmas My now DH took me home to his family even though we’d only been seeing each other a couple of weeks as he couldn’t see me spend Christmas by myself. I’d love to set something up so that kids like me don’t have to, either by going to a surrogate family or by connecting them to others like them.

Notso · 30/05/2020 21:30

I'd ask to go halvsies with @YeahWhatevver or @BrieAndChilli I love those ideas Grin

Alternatively I'd love to have a bakery although DS2 is desperate for me to open some kind of Nerf battle zone Hmm

Home42 · 30/05/2020 21:32

I’d like a pottery and a kiln. I would live where I do now, invest the money, stop working and pot!

SciFiScream · 30/05/2020 21:32

I'd start a social enterprise business. I'd buy properties and then renovate them, making them suitable for women and children escaping domestic abuse.

I've got an idea for a community of interest type commune where Mums all work together to get out of debt, work, support their children and move on from the violence.

So imagine 7 women (all with individual flats) they each take a turn to cook...this only cooking once per week!

Pass on clothes, bikes, save money by being able to buy in bulk.

I'd only take the maximum available in benefits for their home. I'd probably make a loss but I don't care.

ElectricTonight · 30/05/2020 21:33

Flip houses !

TeacupDrama · 30/05/2020 21:33

an antiques shop with a workshop where DH would do restoration and maybe my sister could do the re-upholstery maybe some high quality crafts made with the same care and attention to detail that the antiques were made with but not the knocking nails into bits of timber for a chimney on a house with 4 roughly painted windows and selling for £20 , dipping mugs into swirled nail varnish or twee live laugh love stuff
might add a coffee shop but just decent tea coffee and 3-4 types of scones, traybakes a day just good quality but not endless choice

Thisisthelifewevebeengiven · 30/05/2020 21:35

I would set up a launderette/cleaning business. I would offer service washes, optional ironing services, dry cleaning etc. I would also hire out carpet cleaners, power washers etc or have us do it for you for a extra fee. Would also have a base then for customers to enquire about cleaners which we would also provide.

Just need the money now thanks Grin

Thehop · 30/05/2020 21:37

If open a children’s hotel. I’ve got heaps of early years experience and a relevant degree and I’d love a children’s hotel so parents can holiday alone.

Timesdone · 30/05/2020 21:46

Samtsrich can I come and work as a volunteer please? Hope you get there one day.

Ilovecats23 · 30/05/2020 21:48

Stylish maternity clothes on the high street that you can actually try on! I’ve had three children and it infuriated me every time!

ShowOfHands · 30/05/2020 21:54

The allotment. Organic, provides free workshops and training opportunities to anybody but especially the vulnerable. It's a wonderful community and I'm v privileged to work there.

Swiftsseason · 30/05/2020 21:57

Boring but I'd just buy a larger house and have annex for renters or rooms for renters.... Something like that... Or buy some houses in cheaper part of country and rent out... Buy them outright... And I'd be the best ll... Not damp or waiting days. For repairs etc...

Khione · 30/05/2020 21:58

There was a project in Sheffield before SureStart called NewPiN (new parents and infants). I would love to set up and run something similar.

It was run by parents for parents as far as possible. Professionals were there but the agenda was always about what the parents wanted and what the infants needed. It wasn't about providing childcare but helping parents learn how to parent whilst also being themselves (no dictating). There were play sessions, counselling sessions, support sessions, listening sessions, confidence building sessions, advice sessions (including finance and abuse).

To me, because it was an independent charity, it was far more personal, individual and responsive than anything else offered and there was far less red tape.

It was a fabulous initiative and I would love to fund and run something similar - without having to jump through funders hoops in order to get sufficient money to scrape by.

BuffaloCauliflower · 30/05/2020 22:04

@MrsL2016 somewhere with wine and books sounds ideal

Hassled · 30/05/2020 22:18

A bistro. I have it all planned - even the building. And the menu.

Animum2 · 30/05/2020 22:27

Something to do with animal rescue or boarding for when their owners are on holiday

YeahWhatevver · 30/05/2020 22:29

Wonder how much it actually takes (time and money) to get a business going.

Lots of these ideas sound great and not too much of a personal investment to get off the ground.

Flynn999 · 30/05/2020 22:41

I’d build a self sufficient home in a stunning location and live of the land (so small holding and veggies etc). Then I’d do some rustic cabins for hikers to rent (so I can class everything as business expenses Grin)

I’ve always wanted to live rurally and live self sufficiently. Sadly I’m a terrible Gardner and would probably die of starvation quickly.

Aretheystillasleepbob · 30/05/2020 22:43

I’d start a foundation supporting women, lgbt people, and wc people in film and arts, providing grants to film makers, scriptwriters and writers.
