Can you believe that Trump has just tweeted this comment? He is talking about the protests about George Floyd's death. He has also called the protestors "thugs".

Twitter has put a warning on his twitter post, saying that it "glorifies violence". It is also racist!

The "historical context" is a reference to the late 1960s, when the phrase "when the looting starts, the shooting starts" was coined by Miami Police Chief Walter Headley, in reference to his aggressive policing policies in black neighbourhoods.

I'm not saying the North fought the Civil War for altruistic reasons, or for truth and justice or whatever.

But the South fought to preserve slavery. You can dress it up as fighting to maintain their political economy and social hierarchies or whatever you like, but to say that slavery had nothing to do with that -- that is some ideological revisionist nonsense.

Do I agree with it? (violence, looting, arson) No. Do I think a lot of the 'worst offenders' now actually give a shit about GF? No, a lot don't really but they give a shit about a lot of other things that have adversely effected them and this is their opportunity

There are many groups who are equally wronged, but whilst racism does existence this is not just a problem that needs to be fixed by whites. The Asian / Indian community suffer from as bad prejudice, the Gay community probably worse, the Muslims too. All have managed peaceful march dispite terrible provocation.
As said I have been on many March's , some have descended into violence, but on these protests, everyone can become a victim even from those who they are supporting.

Do you know who Colin Kapernick is? He's an American footballer whose peaceful protest against the killings of black people - dropping to his knee during the national anthem at the beginning of the games - resulted in rounded condemnation by Trump and many in the white community. Trump said he was a son of a bitch who should be fired. Guess what? He has never worked again. Some of Kapernick's fellow players - white men - have had no such condemnation or loss of work.

A militia of armed white men stood on the steps of city hall and marched through the streets of NY to demand the end of lockdown. Do you think they would have gone unmolested had they been an armed militia of black men?

Why should black people be held to a higher standard? Why do black people have to prove to white people that they are civilised before they are treated as full human beings?

I agree with much of this.

America 'seems' to be so fucked up as a society at this point, but the roots of it go back so far I don't know what the answer is.

When you like in a capitalist society where even the slightest effort of social support is seen as socialist dogma, and I've even seem commentators on American TV describe things like state welfare and Free at point of service healthcare as akin to theft, then its easy to see how so many people fall through the cracks. (not just African Americans although due to historic inequalities mainly African Americans but also many white people) When people feel disenfranchised, forgotten about then they will turn that anger sometimes in the wrong places. This is how Incel movements, White Supremacists, gun lobbyist and the people turning these protests into riots manage to thrive.

I don't think there'll ever be true equality or harmony on the US, from slavery to black codes and Jim Crow to lynchings and the KKK there's just too much history there to ever have a healthy resolution.
