To ask how you stopped caring what other people think

I find I spend a lot of my time thinking about decisions (big or small) based on what others will think - friends, family, even colleagues. It’s exhausting ! Has anyone got any tips on how to train your brain not to do this?

The phrase 'What other people think of me is none of my business' became something of a mantra to me in my thirties, in an attempt to stop second-guessing everything. Soon started to believe it and now, in my mid forties, I genuinely could not give a toss!

Age with me too, 63 in fact! Just after my judgemental mother died actually.
And when I remarried. I have had 2 divorces ( long story) and constantly worried about what people would think of me when I say my DH is my third husband. Now I genuinely don’t care as no one knows what happened in my previous marriages as they weren’t there and I’m finally at a place in my life where I don’t have to justify myself.
Sadly I think it stems from my childhood where one of my mothers favourite phrases was “ don’t make a show of yourself, whatever would the neighbours think”

@Knittingnanny can completely relate to the judgemental mother situation. Certainly it has always been almost conditioned in me to consider ‘appearances’ . I’m glad you’ve got to a place where you no longer care about such nonsense

You’ll never please everyone so just do what pleases you.

I’ve never really given a flying fook what people think of me and what I do.

Let them think what they want. They are the narrow minded ones and usually get it wrong.

Age, and sobriety.

I think as you enter your 40's and work your way through them you do just get to a point where you have less fucks to give. I am what I am, I will live as I see fit and have confidence in my choices.
