AIBU to be angry about the lowering of our food standards?

Whilst we are distracted by the Cummings story, this seems to have been slipping through unnoticed. I don’t want to eat the shit that Americans eat and I don’t want decent British food to become a luxury item. The DUP are supporting it, despite NI being a land of farmers. www.thelondoneconomic.com/news/full-list-of-mps-who-voted-to-lower-our-food-standards-during-the-covid-pandemic/26/05/

I'm going to write to my MP and also a few programmes on R4: farming today, womens hour, the food programme.
I don't just want to sit here and seethe (although I will do that aswell!)

Msmcc1212 · 28/05/2020 14:16

You are totally right to be angry. We all should be. Sadly I feel that this will be met with apathy.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 28/05/2020 14:58

People in the UK just seem so happy to roll over and be crapped on from a great height.

There is an NFU petition here If you want to sign - I’ve put it on my FB page. At least I feel I’m doing something!

AlexTheLittleCat · 02/06/2020 11:13

Thanks for posting the petition @SecondaryBurnzzz.

It's awful. I did think this would happen, but it's horrible to actually see it in action. Not really "take back control". More "take back control and then give even more away to someone else".

I think we have going to have to eat more vegan food too.

SecondaryBurnzzz · 04/06/2020 21:32

The independent have written a piece on it here and #chlorinatedchicken is trending on Twitter. Hopefully the word will get out now

VeniVidiWeeWee · 04/06/2020 22:05

Do none of you realise that the U.K. has higher animal welfare standards than the E.U.?

Why Don't you start a campaign demanding that the E.U. produces meat to U.K. standards?

Please see above post.
MeglaFlop · 04/06/2020 22:35

I wish people would stop misusing the 'chlorine washed chicken' soundbite. The issue is not with eating the chicken there is nothing wrong with it. If you drink tap water, you'll be aware it has chlorine in it for cleaning purposes yes?

The issue is animal husbandry, and the quality of life of the animals before slaughter. And if you really care so strongly on that front, don't eat meat.

Baaaahhhhh · 04/06/2020 22:48

Salad leaves are washed in chlorine per EU rules. Just saying.

HollysBush · 04/06/2020 23:06

I’m not concerned about the welfare of salad.

Solina · 04/06/2020 23:08

It is upsetting. I am doing my best to only purchase food produced in the UK and when not possible then food from countries as close as possible to avoid it flying from all over the world. I am also purchasing meat and eggs that are free range and higher welfare and both these combined mean the food shop is already quite expensive. I imagine if I want to carry on it will possibly be even more expensive.
We may need to start eating more vegetarian and vegan food than we already are.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 04/06/2020 23:32

@Inoneminute

Please see my post above.

VirginWestCoast · 05/06/2020 00:16

I assumed that the issue with chlorine washed chicken is that washing meat in chlorine could allow for the animals to be kept in worse conditions beforehand.
I've not eaten meat since I was a child, so I can't say that I've given this loads of thought.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 05/06/2020 02:26

We should be able to avoid manky US chicken and hormone-enriched beef by reading labels carefully

No. It is expected that America will demand no food labelling as part of a trade deal. Unless you go to a local butcher you won't know where your meat comes from.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 05/06/2020 02:27

I wrote to my MP 2 weeks ago asking him why he voted with the govt on this. Of course he's a Tory careerist who always does so. I haven't heard back yet.

DemolitionBarbie · 05/06/2020 07:36

Well, I for one think it's worth it if some billionaires get richer. It's the will of the people to eat pigswill.

Dotty1970 · 05/06/2020 10:45

pointythings

YANBU, but this is what people voted for last December. They were told this would happen. Now they're going to have to live with the consequences. I only feel sympathy for those who did not vote for this government.

Food labelling in terms of origin will also be going so we won't even be able to escape eating this crap.

exactly this week said pointy

Dotty1970 · 05/06/2020 10:46

🤔 Exactly this, well said pointy

Baaaahhhhh · 05/06/2020 15:11

I am not sure this will be true. It will be in the interests of supermarkets to declare origins for consumer choice. If it doesn't have a label, don't buy. I am assuming meat currently labelled as "British" will still be so.

FliesandPies · 05/06/2020 15:51

Heard a clip of Theresa Villiers from December stating that of course there would be NO chlorinated chicken or hormone fed beef in the uk.

Same as they said there would be no borders in NI.

This Gov is incapable of telling the truth.

Maduixa · 05/06/2020 16:30

I didn't vote for "this government", but do you seriously think there are reasonable options to vote for? I'm reminded of Timothy Garton Ash, who did a tour of the former Warsaw Pact countries (minus the USSR) in the early '90s and came away with the impression that even when people feel very strongly that their government is the worst possible government on Earth, they will still vote for that government if they perceive the opposition as even worse. That is, unfortunately, currently the situation in the UK.

DrManhattan · 05/06/2020 16:41

Hey how do I find out which way my MP voted? Thank you

Mumratheevergiving · 05/06/2020 17:01

"Let them eat cake (& substandard, intensively farmed food to the detriment of British agriculture and public health)"collectively shout the Conservative party. They really are excelling themselves at selling us down the river this parliament. The sad fact is that many of the public who voted for Brexit thought it would mean a return to home produced 'Best of British' produce.

I bet Prince Charles would like to insert a Duchy Organic Carrot into Boris's windpipe!
