Whilst we are distracted by the Cummings story, this seems to have been slipping through unnoticed. I don’t want to eat the shit that Americans eat and I don’t want decent British food to become a luxury item. The DUP are supporting it, despite NI being a land of farmers. www.thelondoneconomic.com/news/full-list-of-mps-who-voted-to-lower-our-food-standards-during-the-covid-pandemic/26/05/

The government are changing the Human Rights Act as well.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-uk-trade-talks-safeguards-government-human-rights-act-gove-a9535056.html

We’ve known for a while that we weren’t getting a Norwegian-style deal or a Swiss-style deal. It turns out that we’re aiming for a Belarusian-style deal. I hope this doesn’t include human rights abuses and the return of the death penalty.

Come to think of it, I bet if the return of the death penalty in the UK was put to a referendum, the Yes vote would win.

Inoneminute · 28/05/2020 07:30

But this is what Brexit was about, "we" apparently didn't like having do do what Europe told us in regard to Human Rights etc etc.

LellyMcKelly · 28/05/2020 07:34

I’m astonished that farmers, of all people, voted for this when they were always going to be one of the groups most disadvantaged by it.

BGD2012 · 28/05/2020 07:39

I mentioned this in a post the other week. I only knew about it as Deborah Meaden wrote about it on her Twitter. I agree it is awful.

LaurieMarlow · 28/05/2020 07:41

It just blows my mind that the DUP support this. I can’t fathom it.

manitobajane · 28/05/2020 07:43

It's so depressing when you look at any controversial issue and know your mp will have supported it. He's defending Dominic Cummings and has never voted against the government since becoming an mp. He might as well have 'aye' tattooed on his forehead since he seemingly lacks capability for any independent thought whatsoever.

MaxNormal · 28/05/2020 07:59

@Mistlewoeandwhine yes. The US still uses a lot of pesticides that are banned in the EU.

GreenGreenGrassofSloane · 28/05/2020 08:06

My MPs name is on the list - he was a remainer till he realised he’d have better career prospects as a Brexiteer - having an MP whoWe opinion is “Whatever Boris says” Is very frustrating and a bit pointless.

manitobajane · 28/05/2020 08:07

I feel your pain. Ours wants school budgets cut further, benefits slashed etc etc.

MindatWork · 28/05/2020 08:08

We’re semi-rural south east and there’s been a huge increase in people using local butchers and fruit/veg suppliers since lockdown has made food shopping difficult. Many of them have pivoted really quickly and efficiently to doing fruit/veg/meat box delivery, increasing their range of other goods to reflect demand etc, sometimes not much more expensive than supermarkets.

I’m really hoping these businesses carry on getting support and being successful if all these changes go through - but then we’re fortunate enough to be able to afford it. As usual it’s those on low incomes who will suffer Sad.

UnaOfStormhold · 28/05/2020 08:10

I feel another letter to my MP coming on. Not that she'll listen...

MindatWork · 28/05/2020 08:12

Just checked and amazed to find my - usually ineffectual - MP is the one who voted against it!

glueandstick · 28/05/2020 08:16

Ours is the worst form of career politician. Any chance of weaselling further into the cabinet is grabbed. They will do literally anything they are told and will get them favour. It’s disgraceful and they are totally ineffectual unless there is a photocall.

Vinorosso74 · 28/05/2020 08:21

No surprise really. People seemed so obsessed with taking control of laws and stopping immigration they never actually looked at the bigger picture of leaving the EU.
I never have been and never will be a Tory voter but this particular lot are the worst I recall.

hfrdgftcsdg · 28/05/2020 08:26

The standards on nearly all food are disgusting but it’s the way of the World now. Good, clean food is a luxury and has been for years. It’s up to you whether you prioritise your health over other luxuries.

If you’re not eating organic, locally grown food then I’m sorry but your food is already unhealthy and poor in nutrition.

Annoying but the truth.

^^^^ Mine too is like this.

Nottherealslimshady · 28/05/2020 08:53

You can blaim leavers for this.
I said this over and over, Europe put so many laws in place on us that are now missing. I'm mostly worried about animal protection type laws

CoronelSuarez · 28/05/2020 08:55

Meat has no place in the food chain. These animals have suffered enough.

SecondaryBurnzzz · 28/05/2020 08:57

Like mindatwork and numerous others, we have started to use local shops and farm delivery services during lockdown and I really hope we can continue to do this. Most american beef is grown using hormones (because they don't have the climate for grass) what kind of affect is that going to have on our children!

I'm sure that in the new agriculture bill there are funds going to farmers for 'national good' or something similar. I assume farmers/landowners will just be paid for managing their land rather than producing food. I imagine that the politicians who voted against the amendment have constituents who will benefit from that.

I try to listen to Farming Today on R4 to keep up to date, it's really interesting.

ChaToilLeam · 28/05/2020 08:57

If you voted Leave, you voted for this. Sad and appalling, especially for those on lower incomes or who don’t have access to farm shops and the like. How is this supposed to represent getting back control? We’re becoming a vassal state of the USA, and that’s a bloody shitshow.

SecondaryBurnzzz · 28/05/2020 10:11

Is there anything that can be done?

manitobajane · 28/05/2020 10:17

munchbunch If only all of us with an ineffectual yes man for an MP had the same one, sadly I think there are several.

KateF · 28/05/2020 10:32

No surprise to see my MP on the list. I don't think he's got two brain cells to rub together but he gets re-elected time after time. I wallowed a bit after the election but at the age of 50 I've joined a political party and will actively do something to fight back.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 28/05/2020 11:05

I think I’ll be trying to go as vegan as possible. It depends on how much food prices go up, post Brexit, also. I already make most of our food from scratch. I don’t think my family could afford an organic diet.
