In the interests of equality, as we have had other threads for other countries, I thought I'd start this thread.

I'll start it off with

Bloody awful weather
Obsessed with class
Racist and in some places sectarian too
Filthy cities.

OP posts:
PurpleTalkingTrees · 27/05/2020 07:33

So much ...

The weather, people talking about the weather.

Crowded, so many day trippers coming and spoiling everyone else’s 2 square feet of outdoor space in the country.

Shitty housing, everyone lives on top of each other and complains all the time about hearing the neighbours whispering through paper thin walls.

Hopeless response by government to COVID-19, thanks to that thousands of people have died and more will.

Racist but to make it worse, everyone thinks they’re not.

Unidentified monsters in lakes meaning you can’t swim in them, or boat on them or camp or fish anywhere near water just in case.

Calling the ocean the “seaside”, it’s so twee.

Lack of air conditioning on moderately hot days so temperatures are like being in an oven.

Expensive to live in.

Playing chicken to cross the road because no one stops for pedestrians.

Did I mention whinging poms? Because apparently it’s fine to create threads slag off other countries (like the current threads on USA, Nz/Australia) but if anyone criticises the UK it’s ever so horrid and negative and brings the thread police out in force. So just dishing out what’s been served Hmm

Barkingfuckingdogs · 27/05/2020 07:34

Barnabee, totally agree with you however that the NHS is not underfunded but is in fact run criminally inefficiently.

overnightangel · 27/05/2020 07:34

@BeltaneBride @Khadernawazkhan
Are you two the type of morons who also say we shouldn’t be criticising the government at the moment?

Ever heard of free speech?

namechangerequiredagain · 27/05/2020 07:35

Everyone always whingeing. It's always someone else's fault - the gov, the rich. The lack of can-do attitude.

This ^ and this:

The cult status of the NHS. It needs overhauling. It’s not underfunded, it’s wasted on needless managers and stupid schemes. It’s a disgrace.

Oh and the hypocritical facebook rants. Like my teacher friend who posts .... 'it is NOT safe to open schools..... there is no scientific backing to open schools..... do NOT open schools.... this government is KILLING our children....' but is sending his kid into school on Monday???? Go figure Hmm

lilgreen · 27/05/2020 07:35

I disagree that the weather is awful. It’s just right for me. I’m live about 45 mins north of London. Hardly ever rains- I walk my dog twice a day and rarely is it a wet one, even in winter.
I dislike the traffic but it’s a small country with a big population and dirty streets and litter in big towns and cities.

Wouldn’t live anywhere else.

SimonJT · 27/05/2020 07:36

Not many things, but everywhere has faults and lots are faults shared by many countries.

  • the class system and the way the same people who enjoy the class system and benefit it pretend it doesn’t exist
  • the litter/dirt/general disrespect for the environment/facilities around them, for example litter, toilet paper on the floor in public toilets, people leaving mess on tables in cafes or allowing their children to make a mess on the floor and then leaving it.
  • racism, our prime minister is a vocal racist
  • bland fruit/salad/vegetables
  • seperate taps on bathroom sinks so it’s either washing your hands in cold or boiling water
  • the unfair rental market
  • expensive and not great quality childcare
  • the minimum wage being so low you can work fulltime and still require benefits to live
  • poor access to good quality leisure centres without breaking the bank
  • the weird way in which education just isn’t valued
  • greggs
  • dental care is poor and hard to access if you cannot afford to go private
  • public transport outside cities is inadequate
  • social care provision for the disabled/elderly is inadequate
frumpety · 27/05/2020 07:37

Bad things ?

  1. Poor choice of vegtables, its getting better, but I would love more variety of vegtables.
  1. Lack of snow, I would love more snow. Otherwise, the weather suits me just fine.
  1. Anything else bad could be changed.
lilgreen · 27/05/2020 07:37

@PurpleTalkingTrees there are no oceans around the UK, hence we don’t call it the ‘ocean’.Grin

lilgreen · 27/05/2020 07:38

We do say the coast though.

Aretheystillasleepbob · 27/05/2020 07:38

I’m in the south and the weather is glorious here!
If you want a proper whinge the. You need to divide it up into England, Wales, NI and Scotland as they are all so different.

Barkingfuckingdogs · 27/05/2020 07:38

Purple - what monsters live in lakes here?

Alexindiamondarmour · 27/05/2020 07:38

Thanks for creating this thread OP. Was hard to read the previous thread slagging off Australia. Now, I come on to read this and you’re getting a hard time for starting it. Probably from the same posters who whinged about Australia on the last thread.

Thanks for keeping things even.

Greenpop21 · 27/05/2020 07:38

Poor choice of veg??? Eh?

SimonJT · 27/05/2020 07:39

@PurpleTalkingTrees To be fair calling the North sea an Ocean would be a bit weird.

Aretheystillasleepbob · 27/05/2020 07:39

‘Poor choice of vegtables, its getting better, but I would love more variety of vegtables ‘

Not in the south/London

And as for not enough snow - go north to Scotland or NI!

LaureBerthaud · 27/05/2020 07:39

I love living in the UK but those people who are saying there isn't much racism here must be white. Honestly, you're deluded.

namechangerequiredagain · 27/05/2020 07:41

@lilgreen what about the Atlantic Ocean?

bananaontoast1 · 27/05/2020 07:42

The racism/xenophobia that has been encouraged and become rampant in many parts of the country.
The litter and general disrespect that people have for the world around them... I’m tired of seeing people leave such a mess everywhere they go and just not caring about it. Nothing is ever their problem.

I love everything else about the U.K. (well except the government) but those two things are enough that I’m seriously looking at moving my family elsewhere. :(

Hanamuslim · 27/05/2020 07:42

Best things about living in the UK
-nhs
-clean safe water
-disability benefits for those who really can't work
-all different kinds of food
-good shops
-we live in an area with a mixture of all different kinds of people of all races and ethnicities. I like meeting people from around the world.
-we have a lot of nice tourist attractions near by. An hour drive from London, an hour and a half to Bournemouth and 35 mins to Thorpe park. Nice museums and wildlife parks nearby for children.
-free education and my kids also attend really good school.

Bad things about the UK
-a lot of people are rather racist and prejudice. I've experienced it towards myself and towards others.

  • some areas are very dirty and scruffy
pollution is a problem
  • driving has become very expensive
Leobynature · 27/05/2020 07:42

Shit weather
Dirty urban inner cities
Huge divide between rich and poor
Racism
Traffic
Long working hours
Lack of things to do outside of London
Obsession with London

MiaowMix · 27/05/2020 07:43

Of all the things to criticise the UK for: the very charming word 'seaside'. Genuinely funny. 😂

We call it the sea btw.

And the English Channel is not the ocean, fyi.

Hanamuslim · 27/05/2020 07:43

@bananaontoast1 great points brought up. Totally agree with you

Ladyapinks · 27/05/2020 07:44

Terrible housing.

Intolerant people everywhere who complain about children making noise and who fail to realise they were once children .

Expensive childcare .

Failing of special needs children .Terrible services and having to go to tribunal and spending thousands to get what your child deserves .

Very low income and having to require top up benefits even if you work full time and most of the time you have to have two incomes before you can achieve anything meaningful .

LAMPS1 · 27/05/2020 07:46

For me personally, there’s nothing bad about living in the UK and I have lived a lot of years in other countries which I also enjoyed. The seasons and countryside are wonderful. My choice to visit cities only very rarely. Cramped living, poverty, traffic congestion, pollution and noise are features of every country to some extent. The major problem is the lack of integrity with the current government. I dislike the growing trend where it seems acceptable to tell lies and expect to have them believed.

thunderthighsohwoe · 27/05/2020 07:48

House prices in the South.

Too much rain, not enough snow and crisp winter weather (my personal favourite!).

Lack of public toilets in parks etc. It amuses me that we have a public toilet in our village, but if we take a day trip to a town park with lake, play equipment etc there are no toilet facilities.
