In the interests of equality, as we have had other threads for other countries, I thought I'd start this thread.

I'll start it off with

Bloody awful weather
Obsessed with class
Racist and in some places sectarian too
Filthy cities.

OP posts:

I look white British but I'm from an ethnic minority.
The racism is absolutely terrible in this country. Sometimes I tell people and they are Shock. The best is if they are having a rant or moan about my ethnic group, I say, oh that's me. The reply is invariably but we don't mean you. Of course you don't mean me, but you tar us all with the same brush. Do we tar all white British people with the same brush.
If one of you steals are you all thieves. White people have murdered, are you all murderers. Of course not.
Then add the politicians, the biggest racists and the most dangerous as they try to enrol society into their prejudices, and stereotypes.
Unless it's a really big case you don't get to hear about it.

Exactly the same with immigrants. ABSOLUTELY the same. "But we don't mean you. You are a good immigrant" Awww. Cheers... 🙄

Destroyedpeople · 29/05/2020 21:34

I am afraid it's true. People can be really hostile to newcomers/immigrants

White people are guiltier of more racism as a demographic than other racial groups

Do you have reliable evidence of this?

The idiotic decisions people make/lout behaviour.
Self centred people
The hero worshipping
Jumping on the band wagon of hero worship
The litter
The drinking culture
The traffic in many parts
The dark winters that seem to last for months
The national curriculum
The Tories

Destroyedpeople · 30/05/2020 07:27

If people are not sure about the institutionalised racism in the UK I suggest reading 'why I am no longer talking to white people about race'. In fact the author specifically mentioned about how there are certain white people whose eyes just kind of glaze over while they go into denial about it.

The tabloids and right wing press
Low productivity levels, rising cost of living and stagnant wages for many
High levels of inequality
Low levels of education and lack of critical thinking in much of the population
The current government
The feeling that most things are declining - poorer services, dirtier streets, vacant shops etc

WiryTail · 30/05/2020 07:32

I've lived overseas for 16 years and go back to UK once a year.
For me it's the dismal, grey weather (NW) and the grim sadness of the people.

Plus the traffic.

awaynboilyurheid · 30/05/2020 07:57

Dark winters Hate going to work in the pitch dark and dark coming home
State schools based on religion Why do schools in the West of Scotland still have children go to different schools based on your religion? I will never understand it , which leads on to
sectarianism
City Councils that leave beautiful historical buildings To rot and fall down (Glasgow city council I’m meaning you)
The Drinking culture, the Spanish they can make a glass of wine last all night It’s more about being sociable but in the UK so many people just go on holiday to get drunk it’s really sad to see.
There much to love too! Beautiful scenery ,clean air ,clean water, we do take a lot for granted.

StumblingOffTheRocks · 30/05/2020 08:07

You know how many women know that they’re paid less than their male colleagues? Black and Asians are often aware that they’re being paid less than their white colleagues.
They’re also less likely to get promoted even though they are fully capable and often, well liked.
I don’t think racism is a class thing. There are plenty of racists in all classes, and plenty of open minded and tolerant people, though middle classes don’t often randomly verbally abuse you when you’re walking down the street or pick a fight with you by bumping into you then turning aggressive.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/05/2020 09:06

Whether here or abroad, racism is certainly not confined to white people, either. Anyone who thinks it is, is either very naive or deluded.

Devlesko · 30/05/2020 12:49

I think racism comes more from white people than other groups though.
It's rare for me to hear of or experience racism from another minority group.

But I'm sick of the white privilege comments I read about so much. Being able to live your life free from racism because you are white does not mean you are privileged. This is the normal state of affairs and how it should be for everyone.
White privilege normalises racism, and encourages division.
You need to stop saying this if you want to move forward.

MarshaBradyo · 30/05/2020 12:59

Racism can be displayed by the group in power. You need the power and structures.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 30/05/2020 13:28

As a minority group I completely disagree with you.

I'm mixed race, and my skin colour is dark enough that I have had racist comments from white British people, but light enough that I've had racist comments from people in the ethnic minority which I partially belong to.
Neither one feels better or worse than the other.
