In the interests of equality, as we have had other threads for other countries, I thought I'd start this thread.

I'll start it off with

Bloody awful weather
Obsessed with class
Racist and in some places sectarian too
Filthy cities.

OP posts:

Trains (in the North West they are dreadful)
Motorways - as above
Weather - although lovely so far this year
The intensity of life and due to the above a lack of outdoor life.
House prices too high
The 100mph lives that people lead

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 27/05/2020 23:00

It’s current government

Ginfordinner · 27/05/2020 23:01

I never really get it when people say it’s grey and damp’ all the time. It’s just not true In my experience

That’s because you live in the south. There is quite a difference in weather patterns depending on where you live in the UK. I live on the edge of the Pennines in South Yorkshire. In winter it rains a lot. It is damp and grey most of the time. We have had the wettest winter since I can remember, and an unusually dry spring. The weather is glorious at the moment, but we are usually 5 or 6 degrees cooler than the south east.

Like another Yorkshire poster class is never discussed. We either ignore it or, more usually, either don’t notice it or don’t care. I only ever see class mentioned on mumsnet.

Zeusthemoose · 27/05/2020 23:05

matingmantas agree with your post. I also don't understand people slagging off the weather. The seasons are beautiful. I've lived in Oz and Spain and 100% prefer the weather over here.

Longdistance · 27/05/2020 23:28

I love the Uk. Only thing I don’t like is everyone is majorly critical. Always on a downer. Just get on with it!

As my Hungarian df said on his deathbed ‘I’m an Englishman!’

matingmantas · 27/05/2020 23:29

Nearly every country in the world expects people to contribute to their own healthcare costs in a much more direct way than the UK does. Most countries expect people to contribute to post 18 education. Many have benefits systems linked to prior contributions not need.

I get that things could be better. I don't think a lot of what people would like is realistic or even optimal.

MrFaceyRomford · 27/05/2020 23:34

Idiots who think that anything which originated from overseas (esp. Scandinavia or NZ) is ipso facto superior to anything which originated in the UK.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 27/05/2020 23:38

The UK is not 'England' educate yourself
Nowhere, NOWHERE, have I said England. It's pretty common to refer to people of UK as nation as well as refering to each individual nation in it as a nation. Ffs even BBC and all big national news channels do it. I guess they should educate themselves too. 🙄 Seriously.

Pepperwort · 27/05/2020 23:41

matingmantras - and yet other countries on the European continent manage all of those things much better. We do not want to be like the USA for healthcare costs. Many European countries do not charge for University education, or have total charges of less than E2000 - total, not yearly. European countries' welfare systems are generally better than the UK - and have far less structural inequality to overturn to begin with.
I don't know what you are comparing to - personally I will not accept a comparison with 3rd world countries, nor the US, as desirable for what was a much better country for more of its people not long ago.

Kittenlicker · 27/05/2020 23:43

The weather. I moved to the North West a few years ago and it almost make me cry. Near constant rain for the first 6 months of our life here. Seems to have slightly improved during lockdown. Grin The government. It’s shit. The public transport. We have two buses a week here. Ridiculous.

HepzibahGreen · 27/05/2020 23:44

Bad public transport outside of London

Terrible health"care"-especially for over 60s in hospital and maternity.

Supermarkets have taken over to the extent that corner shops are almost extinct and the produce is uniform and tastes of nothing.

Apathy about the things we had that were great being taken from us.

Petty mindedness and lack of warmth in some people

Destroyedpeople · 27/05/2020 23:47

@OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow yes you clearly did in that link. Google the nations of the UK state if you are not sure instead of whining about czechoslovakia.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 27/05/2020 23:53

@Destroyedpeople are you referring to the word "english" part of that link?
Just so I am clear

Kalifa · 28/05/2020 00:04

It’s a very nitpicky thread. I am an immigrant and I don’t find anything bad about the UK. It beats Australia with its fucking flying cockroaches.

HepzibahGreen · 28/05/2020 00:07

This, though, this comment shows the attitude of Brits about a lot of things:
The fact that foreign languages are not taught in schools properly so we can all only really speak English.
Ok. See, I know a lot of Brits don't speak other languages, but it's not the fault of schools! Schools teach languages (not that schools are the only way to learn obvs)
I have friends in several other countries and they all speak English, and often a few other languages too, because they make the effort to learn!
You can't always blame someone else for your own laziness. There has never been an easier time to learn languages. Brits tend to want things handed to them on a plate. I hate to say it but it's true.
@mrsBtheparker “ Those who think that the UK is so inherently racist really need to get out more.”

Getting out is what leads to me be being called paki, darky, isis etc, then theres the monkey noises. People with black/brown sounding names are less likely to be called to interview, we are also much more likely to be subjected to stop and search (I have been subjected to so it a lot) than a white person.
Sadly Simon is right; I got called to an interview because of my place of birth (they assumed I was black and were ticking a box), I got the job because I am (they were very happy to point out) white.

Grim attitude.

My sister (also very white) was called a fat paki because the NF type obviously thought paki was way worse than just yelling fat Hmm

LEELULUMPKIN · 28/05/2020 02:43

Statistically the UK is the least racist country in Europe, if not the world.

Yes there is racism, but with that in mind it seems stupid to put it on a list,.

user1471565182 · 28/05/2020 03:09

Forelock tugging, economically illiterate fools and the subsequent wealth inequality

LucaFritz · 28/05/2020 03:15

Beige boring cuisine
Filthy streets and cities
Useless councils
Dodgy self serving government
Useless crime system that is against women

LiesHumansTellThemselves · 28/05/2020 03:17

How odd, so many MNers ready to put the boot in to the US and Australia but when the same thread is about the UK, the defensiveness!

For the record, I have lived in all three and am a dual citizen for two.

All have their positives and negatives, somethings are both positives AND negatives at the same time.

The reaction to this thread is pretty interesting.

AtaMarie · 28/05/2020 03:17

"Statistically the UK is the least racist country in Europe, if not the world."

Where does that info come from?
