In the interests of equality, as we have had other threads for other countries, I thought I'd start this thread.

I'll start it off with

Bloody awful weather
Obsessed with class
Racist and in some places sectarian too
Filthy cities.

OP posts:

I was a supply teacher initially and the grimy tower blocks, run down schools and barely fed children really shocked me

Tower blocks are grim and the substandard ones thrown up in the 60s and 70s should be pulled down and replaced with decent housing.

I really can’t get worked up about taps as a reason to hate a country ffs.

Are they built any differently than tower blocks in other european countries?

Smellbellina · 27/05/2020 20:08

Yes I love my tomato and weed plants don't Diss it....grin

Ha reminds of ‘tomacco’ Grin

Popebenedictsp45 · 27/05/2020 20:14

The rampant consumerism - people going shopping as a hobby. Buying bucketloads of crap from poundland.

The homogeneous high streets full of Specsavers, Superdrug etc. Beautiful old buildings converted so they can have plate glass windows on the ground floor to turn them into a Subway. So depressing - I don’t understand how local councils let that happen.

The drinking culture that turns the streets into something quite different at night.

Destroyedpeople · 27/05/2020 20:15

Oh haha the 'tomacco' wasnt that the Simpson s. ..? At least I don't have a meth factory like in family guy....

Ylvamoon · 27/05/2020 20:18

The UK is overpopulated...

a12345b · 27/05/2020 20:21

@Immigrantsong spot on with everything you said.

a12345b · 27/05/2020 20:22

@OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow yes in other european countries it is very very common to live in flats but the standard of the buildings is so so much better. No plastic windows, proper walls rather then cardboard like ones

a12345b · 27/05/2020 20:24

@CoronaIsShit there really are better climates on which to grow tomatoes, with enough sun to ripen them properly and have them actually taste amazing, believe me

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 27/05/2020 20:26

@a12345b i know taht it's common. But I thought it's same built like the ones from communist times. Concrete panels, chipboard walls so you can hear every fart. Now upvc windows.

Destroyedpeople · 27/05/2020 20:26

Honestly all these problems are due to the financial corruption. Flats being whacked up on the cheap.

DustyMaiden · 27/05/2020 20:28

In my personal experience I can find nothing wrong with it.

lboogy · 27/05/2020 20:37

There are good and bad things about lots of places .

Things I don't Iike:
In my area - people using parks and open spaces for bbq and not taking their rubbish
Expensive housing
London is generally pretty dirty
Cramped tubes

I've experienced both casual and overt racism. I still think the U.K. is a pretty great place to live.

badg3r · 27/05/2020 20:39

Compared with several other European countries:

Single glazing!!
Dirty cities
Obesity
Normalised alcoholism
House quality, especially in rented accommodation
Cost of childcare
The politics at the moment
Ingrained sense of being superior to other countries in some groups

I do love the UK though!

Barbadossunset · 27/05/2020 20:42

Omgthere yes that’s true about the communist ones - the endless blocks of Plattenbau in the former East Germany and other Soviet Union countries are extremely depressing.

Destroyed - yes there was a lot of corruption.

StoneofDestiny · 27/05/2020 20:50

Tory government
Expensive rail transport
Unpredictable weather
Dog shit
Litter
Largely right wing press
London centric news and politics
Lack of integration

Destroyedpeople · 27/05/2020 20:52

Yes those estates in central Europe are just....acres and acres of monotonous blocks. I mean I know we have blocks here but more interspersed with other kinds of housing. I have stayed in eg Poland and Czechia and it's just depressing tbh...
Also I have spoken to people from eg Budapest and they tell me that away from the lovely city centre it's just endless estates of uniform blocks.
Another Hungarian guy told me that the Hungarian/Slovakian thing makes Derry look tame...
So everywhere has its problems..nowhere is perfect.

RainbowMum11 · 27/05/2020 20:54

The Government
The press

2468whodoyouappreciate · 27/05/2020 20:57

We're an overcrowded country with tiny overpriced houses so small people have to have storage units elsewhere for basic stuff like Christmas decoration, camping kit and bikes etc.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 27/05/2020 21:01

Brexit
Far too many racist bigots
Collective inability to drink responsibly
Boris
Our handling of the Coronavirus which is inept and heartbreaking
Terrible disgusting inequality between rich and poor
Absurd situation with housing, social housing and renting
Weather's a bit shit tbh

apples24 · 27/05/2020 21:07

Am an immigrant to the UK (Scotland) having lived here for nearly 15 years. There are more things that I like than dislike, but my dislike list would contain at least:

Brexit and along with that the "make Britain great again" types & their inflated sense of self-importance
Cost of childcare
Yellow press
Lack of good safe cycling routes & wide pavements for pedestrians
Messy looking towns (combination of litter, ugly shop windows, crap pothole repairs, mess left behind by utility companies constantly digging up roads)

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 27/05/2020 21:14

I don't think they are depressing. They are being massively renovated over the past decade. They are actually nice. They are making them colourful😁
But why I asked if the built is different is simply because all our were always clean and kept inside... Unlike the ones I visited here unless SUPER expensive... So I wondered if the built or people.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 27/05/2020 21:15

Sorry that was about the tower blocks in former ussr countries

Bleepbloopblarp · 27/05/2020 21:17

I feel incredibly lucky to be from the UK. Can’t think of anything that bad compared to many other countries.

Destroyedpeople · 27/05/2020 21:23

Sorry but those central European countries are NOT the 'former USSR'. Personally I find acres of grey uniform tower blocks depressing. I am not talking about standards of housekeeping within.
