Tell me the bad things about living in the UK

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 27/05/2020 06:11

In the interests of equality, as we have had other threads for other countries, I thought I'd start this thread.

I'll start it off with

Bloody awful weather
Obsessed with class
Racist and in some places sectarian too
Filthy cities.

OP posts:
eaglejulesk · 27/05/2020 11:39

And people who come from abroad to live here and then are rude about the country and the culture here.

Priceless!

giantangryrooster · 27/05/2020 11:45

@eaglejulesk I expect (and hope) that the posters commenting this way haven't been on the other two threads. It's is so not fair to be able to give it, but not to receive it.

You have my sympathies, deep breaths Smile.

itstrue · 27/05/2020 11:46

@goldenbear no it's not surprising that the majority of posters are from the uk. What is surprising is the amount of cultural racism on this site. It's sad and doesn't reflect well on the UK

terrelontane · 27/05/2020 11:51

Inverted snobbery.

Disquieted1 · 27/05/2020 11:57

Why are people moaning about the weather? We have the best weather on the planet. It doesn't really get either too hot or too cold, and being at a high latitude means that summer evenings go on and on.
I certainly wouldn't swap it for say southern Spain where you're roasted like a chicken and the sun goes down at 6pm.

Goldenbear · 27/05/2020 12:01

I think there are issues in this country, of course, but I really don't understand the surprise over 'class', a constitutional monarchy is obviously going to be based upon the idea of social hierarchy. Where is the 'surprise'?

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 27/05/2020 12:01

I've not RT whole ft yet but I dislike that we are so willing to moan about Britain being rubbish. I'm not pretending it's perfect but no country is. America has a lot of faults but it's population are mostly proud of their nation. There's nothing wrong with being patriotic about the good parts of Britain - I think we are mostly a live and let live bunch (twitter and internet nuts aside), the weather is lovely (not extreme and the rain keeps the countryside looking nice), we can buy food from lots of different cultures, we can take for granted the right to an education, healthcare, innocent until proven guilty etc.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 27/05/2020 12:05

You can be proud British, love Britain in general, but actually say some things are wrong. It doesn't make you Britain hater or non patriotic...
No one is saying everything and everyone here is shit... Because it and they aren't.

This is a thread about bad things here. There are bad things here. There is nothing bad on saying there are bad things here.

happyandsingle · 27/05/2020 12:08

I like living here.No where is perfect but I'd rather live here than a lot of other places.

Goldenbear · 27/05/2020 12:16

Equally, the 'bad' things listed are opinions not facts so some posters will dispute their accuracy.

mrsBtheparker · 27/05/2020 12:18

Can't help you I'm afraid. There's nothing 'bad' about the UK that isn't just as bad (or worse) somewhere else.

Never expected so much sense on MN! Every country has its problems, some worse than others. What one person dislikes another personlikes, it's called human nature.
Those who think that the UK is so inherently racist really need to get out more.

Hingeandbracket · 27/05/2020 12:23

I love it here and I am never leaving, but -

If I could address one issue it would be the prevalence of thieving.

I've visited (many) other countries where they don't have to remove all the tools from their van every night and where there are not signs everywhere warning you not to leave anything in your car ever, and where I have seen things lying around which would soon vanish here.
It's just about the only thing that seriously annoys me.

Aretheystillasleepbob · 27/05/2020 12:25

I happen to think that the British weather is okay - never gets too hot or two cold, is very temperate, we don't have hurricanes or tsunamis or extreme weather. We don't have to spend summers hiding from the blazing heat, or have winters so cold we can't go outside. We have lovely seasons. We have enough water, we don't have forest fires ...
People whining about British weather IMHO are the ones who like to go and roast themselves on beaches and that's so bad for us.

Devlesko · 27/05/2020 12:27

Racism.
Middle class snobs
Entitlement
Stepford wives society
Laws around absent fathers not having to pay for their kids.
Government (this one in particular)

Lweji · 27/05/2020 12:33

From my experience,

How easy identity theft is. I mean mother's maiden name as security?

The current government.

Until recently, no wifi or air conditioning in the tube.

The weather isn't great, but then you get green fields all year.

As for racism, yes there is, but I've found that as a country it tries to cater for different languages and cultures.

I quite enjoyed living in the UK, or at least London, so I won't complain too much. Grin

SimonJT · 27/05/2020 12:34

@mrsBtheparker “ Those who think that the UK is so inherently racist really need to get out more.”

Getting out is what leads to me be being called paki, darky, isis etc, then theres the monkey noises. People with black/brown sounding names are less likely to be called to interview, we are also much more likely to be subjected to stop and search (I have been subjected to so it a lot) than a white person.

Lweji · 27/05/2020 12:35

Oh, yes, price of public transport and trains.

Elsiebear90 · 27/05/2020 12:39

I wouldn’t live anywhere else, but there are a few things that I hate:

-The class system and snobbery, especially surrounding accents

  • The weather, although it has been nicer lately
  • Earning potential is a lot lower than other equivalent countries like the US, and houses are a lot smaller and more expensive
Sn0tnose · 27/05/2020 12:42

I love Britain. I’d rather live here than anywhere else on earth.

Although I would love it if I didn’t smell weed every time I open a window.

Goldenbear · 27/05/2020 12:42

The Stepford Wives is a story referring to suburban American housewives, it doesn't bear much relevance to lifestyles here.

Class system- again we are a constitutional monarchy!

MagicKingdomDizzy · 27/05/2020 12:47

Sorry OP I can only think of positives....

The NHS
No Guns
Great state education
Mild weather (ie not scorching heat or arctic winter)

There are negatives about living anywhere but generally I'm very happy and grateful to live in the UK.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 27/05/2020 12:48

What fascinates me here is how is actually the argument "well, it's more racist elsewhere" accepted by many. Should we not moan about rapes because there are more rapes in some other country? No. Because the fact that it's worse elsewhere doesn't mean this level isn't a problem...

DrManhattan · 27/05/2020 12:49

Most politicians are self serving hypocritical creeps. Not sure about the UK compared to other countries but here it's a proper shit show

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/05/2020 12:55

The tolerance of coarse behaviour practically everywhere

Try screaming obscenities, fighting and vomiting in public and similar in some countries and see what happens

Fluffyglitterystuff · 27/05/2020 13:06

No country is perfect but on the whole I think our country is absolutely wonderful and I'm so glad I was born here.

We have decent public services
NHS
Decent housing
Tolerance
Freedom
Beautiful countryside
Gorgeous clean beaches
Fantastic cities
State education
A welfare system
Diverse culture
A mixture of weather yes it can be a bit wet and soggy but we generally don't experience any extreme weather

Of course it's not perfect here all of the time and there are faults with all of the above. But I think we are better off than many.
