Following on from the USA thread what's the worst thing about living in Australia.

OP posts:
IdblowJonSnow · 26/05/2020 19:33

The spiders.
The forest fires.
The casual racism and sexism.
That aside it's a country I absolutely love and at one time would have been extremely happy to settle there.

RainbowMum11 · 26/05/2020 19:33

Spiders & snakes

bogfi · 26/05/2020 19:34

Etinox · 26/05/2020 19:36

It’s too far away.
Racism.

Mollythepoodle · 26/05/2020 19:37

Terrible tea bags
School costs - state school
Cockroaches in the bedroom
Houses get very cold in the winter

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 26/05/2020 19:38

Carbon footprint.
Large chunks of it are becoming literally unfit for human habitation as the climate heats.
Long way away from family (assuming family are in UK and depending on how you feel about them).

BellsaRinging · 26/05/2020 19:38

Depends a bit on where you're living but if not in a big city the racism and sexism.

WaterBubble5 · 26/05/2020 19:38

Racism
Snakes
Spiders
Sharks
Jelly fish

Dozer · 26/05/2020 19:38

Deadly creatures.
Have to avoid the water, because of the deadly creatures.
Expensive.

mrsspooky · 26/05/2020 19:39

spiders

Puppylucky · 26/05/2020 19:41

The weather - Sydney has more rain than London and the summer heat can be unbearable
The lack of things to do culturally even in the major cities
The sheer size of the country which means that seeing other bits of it is time consuming and expensive
The conformist society
The insularity
The lack of employment rights
The lack of proper heating during the winter
The expense of living in Sydney at least
The beaurocracy
The lack of shopping choice - either high end expensive or KMart
I loved living in Sydney but was glad in the end to come home

Fishfingersandwichplease · 26/05/2020 19:41

Only been there on holiday but we stayed with friends who said although petrol and diesel are cheaper, everywhere is so far away so you spend as much going anywhere. Cost of living much higher, can't go into sea for large chunks of the year because of the jellyfish and it is so stupidly hot a lot of the time! When we were there, our friends took us out for dinner and when we got back, there was a python on their drive! Had a brilliant time there but wouldn't want to live there at all.

Cheeeeislifenow · 26/05/2020 19:43

Horrible dairy products...unless it was just all the brands I tried.

Cheeeeislifenow · 26/05/2020 19:44

Also my bil and sil 😂😂😂

Cheeeeislifenow · 26/05/2020 19:45

No decent high street shops, over priced designer crap or really tatty cheap crap.

NearlyGranny · 26/05/2020 19:47

Worrying about sharks when you swim. Suburban sprawl around the state capitals. New housing with minuscule gardens mismatched with huge interiors. Horrendous rush hour traffic in most cities. High cost of interstate and overseas flights. Casual, ingrained racism and sexism. Bushfires. Having to check your boots and toilet seat for poisonous spiders!

But there are many many pluses - especially in country towns! The people in small town Australia would give you the shirt off their back if you needed it and are routinely down-to-earth, friendly and big-hearted. I've lived in both countries and would happily live in Oz again if the UK chucked me out. Not in a state capital, though. The ABC is great, but of course we can get Rosehaven and Phryne Fisher here, too. 😉

Okrightbut · 26/05/2020 19:48

Racism and sexism everywhere.

Tallace · 26/05/2020 19:49

I think i read on here previously that a lot of schools don't have air conditioning.

BeingonFBdoesntmakeittrue · 26/05/2020 19:55

Loads of things there want to kill you 😂 different spiders, snakes, crocs, sharks, jellyfish, octupus, fish.

A roo could beat you up and a koala could give you chlamydia.

Cocobean30 · 26/05/2020 19:57

Never been but my ex is Australian. Blatant misogyny and ingrained racism.

Ineedcoffee2345 · 26/05/2020 19:57

Lived in darwin NT for 3 years age 23/26 loved every second of it. Would never have been able to set up life with kids there. Snakes and spiders the worst

GreyGardens88 · 26/05/2020 19:58

No culture
Gets too hot
Racism - The only country where I've experienced it so blatantly, I got reprimanded by an older white gentleman when I gave money to a homeless black guy "I wouldn't give the blacks nothin mate" Shock

Ughmaybenot · 26/05/2020 19:58

Racism and sexism are rife and really bad, and everything wants to kill you.

Elouera · 26/05/2020 19:59

Australia is as large as Europe, so something 'bad' in one part, might be completely irrelevant in another. To put a blanket opinion about the whole place is fairly useless, but here goes. For perspective, I lived there 28yrs, UK 16 yrs.

  • Online shopping is behind. 10yrs ago, you couldn't do online grocery shopping. Its better now, but delivery is still comparatively expensive.
  • Day to day news is about local things, maybe something brief going on abroad, then ALL SPORT! It can feel insular unless you seek out news items on other channels.
  • Internet and Foxtel (similar to Netflix, hulu) is very expensive
  • Time to fly back to Europe and time zone difference in terms of calling family/friends back in other countries
  • Fashion is several years behind. Its generally much hotter, so fashion is far more casual than in Europe.
  • Depending where you live, a car is often the only option to get around
  • Package deals to travel to neighbouring islands/countries are more expensive than the bucket deals you can get from the UK
  • Sausages. Majority are a pinky, tasteless puree that splits and nothing like British sausages with 'bits' in.

I'm surprised when people say snakes are an issue. Unless you live rural or remote, the vast majority of Australians have never seen a snake in the wild let alone anywhere near their home!
