Following on from the USA thread what's the worst thing about living in Australia.

sorry but how UK people think Costa or Starbucks is nice

Most U.K. people think Costa and Starbucks is swill and use independent coffee shops or make their own.

They really don’t, otherwise there wouldn’t be a Costa or Nero on every high street relative to the still small number of independent coffee shops.

Starbucks had to shut in Australia as no one bought their coffee. Australians don’t like restaurant chains either.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/06/2020 16:40

They don't?
So no KFC, Maccas, Chicken treat, Subway etc everywhere?
Agree about the coffee thing though, they are hugely into good coffee, I find the same with Canadians.

The guys I used to work with went to Hungry Jacks or Red Rooster for lunch everyday. There is also an obesity problem in Australia. Just like the U.K.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/06/2020 17:11

Oh I'd forgotten about them, but yes.
Also weird road house food when I worked in small towns, chicko rolls anyone?Grin

Agree with PPs. I have lived in Oz. It's a wonderful place to go for a year or two, to explore their amazing countryside, and as a base for travel around the Pacific region. I was offered a permanent job but turned it down because:

Sexism - it is 100% lad culture. Don't bother watching Life of Mars to rediscover the 70s - just go to Adelaide.

Ditto racism

It's conformist and unadventurous. Don't be fooled by all the cosmopolitan Australians you meet travelling. They're the exception. Australia is Porpoise Spit (Muriel's Wedding), not Crocodile Dundee Grin

The countryside is beautiful, but the towns are ugly as fuck

It's difficult and expensive to travel outside of Australia especially if you're on the east coast.

It's boring. There's just not much to do, at least compared to any major European city. Outside of Sydney & Melbourne (and possibly Perth, have only been there a couple of times), restaurants close by 9. Museums and art galleries are tiny.

I missed old stuff. There is no record of their history in the landscape. There is a long history, of course, but, because aboriginal peoples did not build in stone (except in Tassie), you can't see any trace of it.

needliferaft · 17/06/2020 20:04

@MrsNoah2020 didn't build in stone? Best do your research. Examples in Perth, Victoria and New South Wales. Terra Nullius wasn't tested in Tasmania alone.

I'm happy to be corrected, but I was told this when I did a course in Aboriginal art, run by aboriginal artists in Alice. It was a few years ago, so perhaps archeologists have found more remains since? But I think it is still true that there are no extant stone buildings in mainland Australia that predate the colonial period, which was my point.

Born and bred adelaide native, 100% agree. I find Melbourne and Gold Coast much less sexist, though still present

Plus in another ode to the 70s, our shopping hours are shit and stores in SA wonder why so many shop online....
Our Aldis in SA cant even sell booze due to state laws. So what do i do, get mates interstate to post it to me

But I think it is still true that there are no extant stone buildings in mainland Australia that predate the colonial period, which was my point

This is true as Aboriginals were typically nomadic, moved with the seasons, built temporary shelters or used caves already in the landscape.
Our oldest buildings are from when white people first came here

Gremlinsateit · 18/06/2020 03:34

Not true, actually. Start with the Brewarrina fish traps and once you’re interested, read Dark Emu.

Nonetheless, Australia is horrible, ugly and a cultural desert, full of identically awful people. Please don’t come here :)
