To take pebbles from the beach?

DarylDixonsHair · 25/05/2020 15:02

Is it allowed? I'd like to put some borders around my flowers beds so need about 20 - 30 medium sized ones. I wouldn't take them all in one go, probably a handful at a time while dog walking.

Just wanted to check I'm not breaking the law/endangering the planet/taking the piss.

Have you heard of costal erosion people? And how one of the ways we're trying to combat that is by adding pebbles (fake or real) to beaches. We might as well give up.

DarylDixonsHair · 11/11/2020 11:31

Ooooh it's my thread!

Many of you will be happy to know I did not raid the beach for pebbles. I went and bought responsibly from a local breeder (garden centre). DD on the other hand has a shoebox full of shells, sea glass, seaweed and a dried up starfish so I may have to disown her.

Definitely leave driftwood alone, google is your friend here

Google is no one’s friend 😠

MadamShazam · 11/11/2020 11:33

Theft 🤣🤣🤣 for fucks sake

In answer to post above -

No . We spend most of the summer cleaning the beach and contributing to coastal management in our village . We maintain the flower beds, take care of the local woods etc . Family are involved in similar across most of the Scottish highlands .

I’m genuinely not concerned that taking bits of rotting wood off the beach, or half a dozen shells, or bits of broken glass and beer mugs, will do any long term harm to the river and beach .

viques · 11/11/2020 11:33

@JaJaDingDong

Crikey viques! although I agree with you.
Sorry! bit of a rant. But as I get older and grumpier I find people’s selfish behaviour so infuriating. Don’t get me started on dropping litter, dog poo, leaving public toilets filthy, playing loud music.......

What's another name for taking things that don't belong to you?

Excellent! Well done OP, thanks for the update.

You don’t have to disown her, just teach her the importance of looking after her planet.

You bought for a local breeder?

Mind boggles!

noneedforthat · 11/11/2020 11:36

If people are that concerned about the beaches I would hesitate to suggest they stop using plastic - that’s a far bigger concern, beaches are bloody teaming with tampon applicators and bottle lids and kids’ toys . And now facemasks too ...

Really, even though you know that it will?

You said you’ve got loads of it and so do your neighbours, so I’m not sure why you’re now claiming it’s only half a dozen shells now. What do you do with it all that’s so important you can’t just leave it in peace? Why do you need buckets and buckets of pebbles and driftwood?

AntsInPenzance · 11/11/2020 12:24

You start out with taking a seashell home from the beach and next thing you know, you're shooting up crack. It's a slippery slope, folks.

AntsInPenzance · 11/11/2020 12:26

My dog brought home a stick from the park, am I a criminal?

IhateBoswell · 11/11/2020 12:34

A breeder of beach pebbles... where can I find my local breeder? I don’t live near a coast 🤔

Selfisolation2020 · 11/11/2020 12:37
@Selfisolation2020 You'll burn in hell, you do know that don't you 😏
Clearly Confused who knew I was such a rebel! Best not admit to taking sticks from the woods /park Grin

OhhCarolina · 11/11/2020 12:43

Why is it different getting them from garden centres? Don't they themselves get them from beaches, the coastal eroding bastards?

J1112 · 11/11/2020 12:44

You are not meant to but Dd always comes home with a small collection from the beach.

GaryTheDemon · 11/11/2020 12:45

No that’s too many, go to the garden centre and buy them.

hetanom · 11/11/2020 12:46

Not many people know this but most global deforestation is caused by dogs and children taking sticks home with them.

GaryTheDemon · 11/11/2020 12:46

V different a child taking a few to adults taking them for gardening /construction

MadamShazam · 11/11/2020 12:47

@GoJoe2020 ok, I'll be sure to turn myself in to the police, along with my 7 year old, for theft of shells from the beach last week. This is peak Mumsnet madness. Get a life. 🤣

GaryTheDemon · 11/11/2020 12:47

Lol love your responses, op
