No, I'm still not bothered either. I thought he was pretty good actually. I secretly admire anyone who can style it out in front of the baying mob.

viques · 25/05/2020 18:04

Funny how his four year old couldn't manage a quick drive in the car to test Daddy's eyesight without needing a roadside wee, but coped with two very long drives between London and Durham without any problem.

frankie001 · 25/05/2020 18:04

Oh and was so worried about his health he completed a “test drive”, even though a dr had cleared him for work. To help make decisions that affect a whole nation.

FurForksSake · 25/05/2020 18:05

Questions we need answered

  1. Can his wife drive
  2. Did they have covid symptoms when they left
  3. Is he going to take an antibody test to show he had it
  4. Was his wife's article fabricated?
  5. Why couldn't the family come to them?
  6. Can we see a picture of the horrid concrete block house he was forced to stay in?
Aridane · 25/05/2020 18:06

He has a second home he could go to. So what....

Er, because the law explicitly prohibits to going to a second home- duh

DivaLasVegas · 25/05/2020 18:07

London is very different to the rest of the UK. I doubt there are any village or town FB's helping each other out. If you are sick, you are on your own. Thats what I remember anyway. I don't blame him for legging it up to his home town to be in the warm buxom of his Geordie family.

Bertoldbrecht · 25/05/2020 18:07
  1. Did his wife's birthday or was it his mother's have any bearing on the decision to travel there
CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 25/05/2020 18:07

yes, agree,
I am not bothered
my own dd came home late March and I was worried picking her up off the train!

however , of course, his son spent the night in a hospital in Durham, which is precisely why they didnt want people to travel!

ypestis · 25/05/2020 18:07

How was his house the target of a public hate campaign IN THE MIDST OF A LOCKDOWN?

The baying mob probably all had “exceptional circumstances“ and the press obviously can’t do this type of serious journalism from home and are now permitted to return to work.

New DC (anything goes) rules!

IHateCoronavirus · 25/05/2020 18:08

If he thought his house was such a risk for his wife and child, why the hurry to go back? Surely he could advise from afar?

viques · 25/05/2020 18:08

PS I want that T shirt. Shame the journalists in the rose garden were too professional to wear them.

solieltoday · 25/05/2020 18:09

There’s going to be so many people “testing their eyesight” now by driving to the nearest beach or local place of interest.

Honestly, you couldn’t make this shit up.

If you thought your husband could not see properly, would you not just offer to drive yourself?

And how rude to say that his parents’ cottage is “not very nice.” What were the words - “You have to understand - it’s like a block...” Grin

thisenglishlife · 25/05/2020 18:10

If his wife never had a cough or fever, did she even have corona? He said she threw up when he first saw her. Was she ever incapitated, how likely would that have been?

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 25/05/2020 18:10

why didnt he leave his wife and child there?

Destinysdaughter · 25/05/2020 18:10

London is full of mutual aid groups and community hubs to support each other.

Chienloup · 25/05/2020 18:11

There are excellent community teams and neighbourhood networking groups in Islington, Diva. London isn't the unfriendly place non-Londoners think it is.

peridito · 25/05/2020 18:11

I don't think he is the same as the rest of us .

You may not agree with his views or advice to gov but he obviously feels that his role is vital .It came across v clearly that he felt torn ,he wanted his wife and child somewhere safe so that he could carry on working .

MrsCollinssettled · 25/05/2020 18:11

If anyone was in a position to get police protection if he was feeling threatened it is him.

Why did he not stay put and have his niece on standby to travel to them?

Why did drive that far to test his eyesight, and why did he not just turn round and drive back once he was happy that he could drive?

Will his insurer be happy about him getting into a car when he thought there was a problem with his eyesight?

Why did the child not just have a wee and get straight back into the car?

Why didn't his wife drive given she clearly was only briefly incapacitated?

One of the main messages was not to travel to other areas in order to avoid increasing demands on healthcare where you travelled to. This is illustrated by Cummings travelling, staying and then needing an ambulance and an overnight stay in hospital for his son.

Clear that he doesn't think the rules apply to him. If the rules had allowed that much leeway the public would have behaved very differently.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 25/05/2020 18:11

i bet his wife wishes she was in Durham now!

FurForksSake · 25/05/2020 18:12

Poor man, I can see staying in this shit hole must have been hell.

Hopoindown31 · 25/05/2020 18:13

He has admitted to breaking the rules. His "exceptional circumstances" cannot cover a day trip out to Barnard Castle even if it was under the guise as a test drive. There is no further digging needed he should resign just like the other advisors have.

But he won't and the support for the lockdown measures has now evaporated. At a local park today there were large groups of people clearly not social distancing everywhere. Complete contrast to Saturday.

crispysausagerolls · 25/05/2020 18:13

What was the noise in the background whilst he was speaking? You’d think as it’s at 10 DS, they could have asked them to stop...

Lemonylemony · 25/05/2020 18:13

There’s a petition in change.org for him to be sacked, btw. Seems worth mentioning.

my2bundles · 25/05/2020 18:13

Put pressure on tne NHS in Durham by using an ambulance and overnight stay. Risking ambulance and hospital staff which shouldn't have been dealing with non locals at time.
